I wouldn't hate a Rome 2. The added complexity in diplomacy would be a welcome addition to Rome, a place that was famous for it's politics.

Another that wouldn't be terrible would be ancient China. The three kingdoms era would be appropriate. The easy campaigns would be the three major factions, but I haven't developed this idea much beyond that.

About the only place I can think of they haven't touched yet would be ancient China. The Three Kingdoms period would be an interesting setting for a game. We'll see, I certainly wouldn't say no to a Rome 2.

"In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only Total War."

Yes. That would be epic. Though I'm not sure how well Total War games would fare with the majority of the units not sticking to formations and nearly all units having powerful and/or rapid fire ranged weapons. Then again, due to the added emphasis on close combat, 40k would probably work better than any other futuristic setting I can think of for a Total War game.

A WHFB Total War game, on the other hand...

May I ask what 'WHFB' is?

Aaaah thought that it was Warhammer:Fantasy. Never knew that it was 'Fantasy Battle' though.

I would love an official LOTR Total war [sure the mods brilliant, but a tad on the buggy side and trolls are just...urgh]

But it will probably be just Rome 2.

I think they should just make Epic Total War, starting at the stone age and expanding towards maybe WW1. You know, like Empire Earth but...good.

Rome 2 Total War, probably. Hopefully they throw a bone to their community and include moddability as a design feature.

Doesn't make a difference really. It's pretty much known variably as Warhammer, Warhammer Fantasy, or Warhammer Fantasy Battle. Usually one of the latter two, so people know you mean the fantasy one and don't confuse it with talking about 40K or Warhammer in general. It's just WHFB is generally the most used shorthand for it, just like 40K is for Warhammer 40,000.

Back on topic though:

I really wouldn't be surprised if the next Total War game was Rome II. Not disappointed either. The original Rome: Total War is probably still my favourite of the series.

ROME ROME ROME ROME ROME

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASE

That would be a definite pre-order for me, no matter what the game actually looks like.

They manage well enough in the actual 40k game. I suspect it would be a lot like Napoleon: Total War, where artillery and muskets are only occasionally broken up by cavalry.

I think there would also be a lot more emphasis on cover, suppression and fast moving units like jetpacks, warpers and bikes. I bet tactically moving units forward in transports would be important too... I want this! IwantthisIwantthisIwantthis!

I would love to see a Total War game based on Warhammer Fantasy, I think the tabletop game would adapt well to Total Wars style of game play, but a remake of Rome would also be good, so either way i say it would be a win.

I'll go with the Three Kingdoms-period, it's a somewhat fresh setting and thanks to a few movies, is even quite popular in the west.

Or another Shogun/Medieval that includes a bigger part of the Asian continent.

Red Cliff is set just prior to the Three Kingdoms period, so around 210AD-ish?
I dunno - my Chinese history is shit at the best of times.

Nevertheless - a Total War: Three Kingdoms would probably ruin every pair of trousers that I own.

I think this will finally be the modern day era total war game. With the improved diplomatic relations, tech trees, large scale maps, etc they are totally prepping for a modern day game.

Thanks for the info mate, I only just got around to seeing Red Cliff this weekend and I was blown away. Everything in that movie was epic and I'd love to do that tortoise formation in a TW game.

I'm only playing Rome for the first time at the moment (Medieval 2 and Shogun 2 will follow), and it certainly doesn't seem like it it needs a Rome 2 just yet. It still plays incredibly.

A new period would be nice. Still, I wouldn't say no to destructible environments and naval battles in a new Rome game.

Really, I'd love to see an updated Rome. That's all I can add, really, as I'm not really feeling creative enough to list off anything new I'd like to see.

The Total War series has repeatedly disappointed me over and over again, though. It's likely I'll never buy another, because for what they've done to innovate graphics and gameplay, they've sucked the fun out of the games very quickly. I'd rather not say what, exactly, because I know I'd get mobbed for it, but maybe a few like-minded people will understand what I mean.

Actually, on second thought, a closer-to-modern Total War would be very fun if dealt with properly. It would just be hard to handle in a way that doesn't make it like every other modern combat RTS and their dog, but not impossible.
