They've already announced the new Total War. [http://kotaku.com/5547924/hey-its-a-new-total-warcampaign] It's an expansion for Napoleon. So, it's an expansion of an expansion, focusing on even smaller scale than the expansion that was already pretty small-scale? Beyond that, I've already summed up my thoughts on this development in my comment on Kotaku, which I will repost here:
So, more boring, static battles with identical armies on both sides? Seriously, the napoleonic era has got to be the most boring period when it comes to warfare. Empire did some cool gameplay changes (multiple theatres, better diplomacy, the City/Town system, etc.) but the boring historical period together with identical armies for most nations really held it back (that's assuming I disregard the buggy mess that Empire was at release and arguably still is).
Ok, I admit I'm not being fair here. A lot of people love that particular historic period and I'm sure they'll have a swell time with this. However, I have trouble getting excited about it. The fact that I think Napoleon:TW was just a bad game (worst Total War game ever) doesn't help the matters.
I guess I can only continue hoping that the Total War franchise gets its shit together, moves on to a more interesting time period and stops sucking.
P.S. I'm not insisting that my opinion is in any way objective or that I consider it the undisputable truth. If you enjoyed Napoleon and Empire, good for you!
Other than that, I can only say that I'd like to see a Total War game set in the Near Future, with basically a New Cold War theme and the various experimental weapons and technologies based on current scientific trends. Granted, that's a good idea and Creative Assembly seems to be immune to those lately...
