Why must reviewists (if there is such a word) alway put rate games in numbers. these numbers really have an effect on what we think if a game has for example 2/10 then everyone thinks its crap. if one has 9/10 then every one feels obliged to buy it. what if someone likes the look of the 2/10 game but thinks the 9/10 game is complete bollocks. then everyone laughs at you for buying the less good game and tries to convince you to buy the other game. yes i know that they are good guidelines but it really does affect peoples views.

As an overall scoring system then no, its useless but a scoring system that that seperated a game out into different categories like sound, graphics, interface, plot, characters ect might be a bit more relevant and would give as much an overview of the reviewers opinion as a lengthy article on the subject; without the obvious gameplay spoilers that some give when they hype up a particular in game sequence that they loved or didn't expect.

1. The word your looking for is reviewer.

2. Many people do care about that little number. Personally though I prefer to read the review to see what exactly the reviewer liked/disliked about the game. Thus I view the number as a guide to the reviewers opinion then form my own.

I think it's become useless with all the high-end scores reviewers give out these days. I much prefer the "if you liked 'X' you'll like 'Y'" style of summing up reviews. That then factors in the reader's own opinion and allows them to take way useful consumer advice from the review that is directly relevant to them personally.

You can't represent personal opinion numerically. I've only reviewed a few games but I never used a score. I feel it's more effective just to give an overall opinion highlighting the good and bad points of the game. Recommend it for people who may like it.

Look, if I'm bored and want to find a game quickly to play, I don't want to read several different reviews on several different games to figure it out. The scores aren't everything, but they are helpful signposts. I can see what's getting high reviews, narrow that down by what genres I'm into, and then read the review. I like filters.

I honestly think its rather silly to quantify any subjective material. I'd rather hear the opinion the reviewer himself/herself. Concluding review with a number makes the review seem done by an unfeeling robot.

Speaking of robots, I like how Escapist reviews let us see their faces. I want to know the face of the person that is review my next potential video game purchase. That gives their words more weight. If I don't see their faces (like reviewers at GameTrailers, who also employ number ratings) I don't really care for the review.

Where the numbers are useful is sites like Metacritic. I generally zone in on the highest score, the lowest score and one or two of the mid range ones from review sites I like. That gives me a fairly decent picture. What I often find is that the content of the reviews is similar, but how much someone likes or dislikes a feature is qutie different.

I don't really pay attention to them at all, I read what the review actually says, so I put no, but I do know that some people like to have a numeric report on a game so they can try and make an objective decision.

This is of course ridiculous since even the numbers are opinion, but do they listen to me when i tell them that? Hahaha...no.

It allows people who don't want to read/listen to the entire review to get a general sense of whether or not the game is any good.
