I liked the rowing as that only gets decided in the last couple of strokes which make a close finish almost always.

I actually hate the olympics. I hate all the hype and all the commercialism and all of the excessive news coverage of...nothing much happening today, but "tomorrow >insert name of American olympian hereinsert name of American olypmian's sport hereinsert name and country of best "acceptable to hate" olympian here<!!!!!!!" And oh yeah...the human rights abuses aren't limited to China, it's just fashionable/acceptable to hate the Chinese right now because Mattel didn't actually care how the Chinese factories made all that toy paint shiny and bright, just as long as it was shinier and brighter than anyone else's. Oh, yeah...and they poisoned your dog last spring, too, can't forget about that.

Honestly? Do any of the people shouting the loudest about the probably under-age gymnasts on the Chinese team care about those little girls? Or do they care that thier team didn't get the medals those little girls earned?

Never watch the Olympics, here. It's kind of borderline-retarded how national governments actually care that people who happen to be born in their countries are talented at some arbitrary sport.

Plus, I always thought the Chinese government were dicks, and putting them in charge of a party just gave them a chance to showcase themselves as the bunch of spaz-tards they are. Arresting people for legally registering for protests like we asked them to? Awesome. Trying to shove a half-blind granny into a "re-education" forced labour camp because she was upset about being forcibly evicted? Classy.

The Western media is always eager to demonize China as much as possible, but the best they can do with all this ammunition is to bray about a lip-syncing girl and a bunch of underage gymnasts?

So, yeah. Screw the Olympics.

I thought the openning ceremony for the olympics was incredible (although it gets a bit boring after you watch for about an hour) and that there were a lot of interesting events.
So yeah, I enjoyed watching the olympics.

I was sad that Canada earn so little medals. However, I was happy of their performance in the end.

Doesn't matter, we will kick your ass in futur competitions.

The olympics...
I've actually been in correspondance with a Chinese student, and she is startlingly pro-Olympics. And it's a bit odd, the differences between the media coverage she gets and the coverage I get.
For example, some British people got arrested for protesting. Chinese media claimed they were doing something unspecified, but more serious than protesting. Like planning some kind of bomb. We (in the UK) heard that they were arrested for protesting. Then (surprisingly) the media in general dropped the story.
Oh, and now her e-mail has been blocked because we were talking about it.

Interesting statistic: of all the 60-or-so applications for protests at the games that were filed by Chinese citizens, how many got approved?

Here's a hint: it's less than 1.

I think the problem with the Olympics this year were that everyone was too busy being suspicious of China to pay attention to anything other than really outstanding athletes.
Oh, and I'm pissed off about the underage athlete not because I want Britain to get some medals, but because they broke the rules and that should not fly.

I only watch the athletics, which were pretty awesome.

A marathon(g) in just over two hours? holy crapola, that's some quality running right there.

I enjoyed the cycling very much.

But couldn't shake the knowledge that the Chinese government made roughly 500'000 people homeless with no support or relocation program so they could build the stadiums. I don't fully understand why China got the games at all (actually, I do understand, I just cling to the belief that even if the world's politicians don't, the world's sportsmen cling to some level of integrity).

Those guys are amazing. It doesn't really make for good TV but I definitely respect that these guys are amazing athletes.

Yeah they were good, I was glad Ireland got a silver in Boxing to hide how crap we were everywhere else.

Everyone complaining about the Chinese gymnast under age pissed me off though, if you can perform to olympic standards you should be allowed to compete.

I was actually impressed with Canada's performance during the last week. I enjoy the Olympics more than I like to admit.
Agreed, i was surprising how we weren't winning anything then Wham, the medals started coming in.

I did watch the Olympics, but I'd of found more interesting if they'd of shown the less mainstream sports. I was told BMX was in the Olympics this year but for the life of me i didn't see any of it.

I agree that the non directly competitive events are cool, like ski jumping or figure skating where you go one at a time rather than as a race, but watching them, can't see that being fun.

Metroid speed running at next Olympics confirmedzorz!

I will fully admit to being obsessed with the Olympics, though it only seems to affect me every 2 years. I recorded every minute of it on my HTPC and watched nearly all of it, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I love the olympics every time, and I think it's good that there is something competetive where we don't spend months arguing about the results afterwards.

The winners win fairly and "bring glory to their country", which I think is great. Phelps was great and Bolt was just as good. Fantastic!

I watched the gymnastics, and was filled with a mixture of boredom and some other feelings I'd like to forget. Mostly along the lines of "I really hope that blonde one's sixteen."
