The olympics...
I've actually been in correspondance with a Chinese student, and she is startlingly pro-Olympics. And it's a bit odd, the differences between the media coverage she gets and the coverage I get.
For example, some British people got arrested for protesting. Chinese media claimed they were doing something unspecified, but more serious than protesting. Like planning some kind of bomb. We (in the UK) heard that they were arrested for protesting. Then (surprisingly) the media in general dropped the story.
Oh, and now her e-mail has been blocked because we were talking about it.
Interesting statistic: of all the 60-or-so applications for protests at the games that were filed by Chinese citizens, how many got approved?
Here's a hint: it's less than 1.
I think the problem with the Olympics this year were that everyone was too busy being suspicious of China to pay attention to anything other than really outstanding athletes.
Oh, and I'm pissed off about the underage athlete not because I want Britain to get some medals, but because they broke the rules and that should not fly.
