There is a game released in 2006 by illusion, a gaming company in Japan. It's called Rapelay, and you play the stalker/rapist/pedophile of a family which consists of a mother and her 2 daughters. I won't go into more detail, but heres a wiki link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RapeLay

I believe no game should be illegal, and I kept to that philosophy for a long time, but this game actually gave me pause for thought...for a whole minute I weighed the pro's and con's of condenming this game, until I decided not to.

It's a game for a...certain demographic, it's not trying to be mainstream and its intended to only be sold within Japan, where it is wholly legal. It sparked controversy when 3rd party members made it English and sold it on Amazon and making it downloadable. Most countries made it illegal to be sold via any means, so only downloads make it available.

So, ask yourself and your very pinciple as a gamer....should this be banned? Is this where the line is drawn? Please leave creative responses with your poll

It sounds like it was already banned in some countries. I don't know who would want to play a game where you rape people...

I voted that it should be banned. That doesn't mean who doesn't want it too be banned makes him a rapist or rapist wannabe.

I'm afraid I know EXACTLY who would want to play a game where you rape people ><.

They are aiming the game at a group of people that are shunned by the entire world, and above all it seems in Japan. Why this game is legal even there is beyond me. I haven't any idea if Fox News' greasy fingers has been over this game, but if they have/will it can't have been pretty on gamer-culture...

It's rape porn. Rape porn exists in book, film and comic form and always has, mostly legally and without causing a firestorm like RapeLay did. So, whether rape porn should be banned is up for debate, but singling out RapeLay for a ban would be discrimination based on medium and set a precedent for video games not getting the same freedom of speech protections as other media.

I just think they should be very very careful about this.

Some people play games purely out of interest, or like me, they really enjoy psychology.
But others get very crazily obsessed, and that's when games get a bad reputation.
Perhaps there could be a method of screening people who want to play it...?

XD I'm a woman and I say keep it legal. Why? Because it's a fetish game, just like any other sexual roleplay that already exists. Let's face it, rape is a fetish for a lot of people. I'd rather those who entertain those thoughts to have an outlet rather than go crazy and ACTUALLY rape someone. As long as we aren't giving kids access, what is the harm?

Dude, it's a hentai game. There will be hundreds of these. Why overreact to one when there are much worse games out there...?

In my personal belief, this feedback is as negative and controversial as the Grand Theft Auto games. I keep out of such childish topics.

I play Grand Theft Auto, does that make me a criminal/murderer? No. If I play RapeLay, will that make me a rapist? No.

Isn't this a bit old now? Meh. I voted banned. But you'll probably get some people that don't agree with censorship of any kind, regardless of how bad the material that's being censored is.

If you like it; good for you.
If you don't like it; don't play it and let other people have their fun.

I personally wouldn't ban this game, when I spoke to someone about it (an individual who had in fact been a rape victim in the past) they summurised why it shouldn't be banned best by saying:

'All the time that a rapist is playing that game they aren't out raping someone, it's the lesser of two evils, also, it'll let some people who have those fantasies act them out in a harmless way rather than looking for the real thing'.

Yeah, the game itself sounds horrible and immensely distasteful but at the same time, the sort of people who'd wanna play this game are the sort of people you'd want to give something to occupy their time and imagination with.

I don't see a logical reason why it should be banned. Shooting people isn't very moral either and still millions play shooters. I'd rather people play a game than rape people in real life. It's sick and twisted, but I don't know why it should be banned. It's just a game and playing it won't make you a raper unless you're already one to begin with, just as playing GTA won't make you a homocidal maniac and playing Guitar Hero won't make you a good guitar player .

No, I don't think it should be banned. There's clearly a market for it, and if that's how they get off, so be it. If there's any reason it should be banned it's because it's a terrible game with poor framerate and shoddy graphics.

I never understood all the outrage. It's a strange culture that we have when astounding forms of violence like hacking off limbs in Fallout can go by without comment on but a game that lets people live out sexual fantasies calls down the wrath of the right wing.

I wouldn't say that no game should be banned (that school shooter game comes to mind) but the outrage over RapeLay was just a case of sensationalist media and their fear-mongering practices. That game did not turn people into rapists or sexual deviants any more than Duke Nukem did.

No it should not be banned.
Playing that game does not make you any more of a rapist, than playing Grand theft Auto makes you a Homicidal sociopath, or playing Just Cause 2 makes you a psychotic terrorist (with a grappling hook arm).

If you think it is immoral, Don't play it. But everyone should have the fundamental right to do anything they want in a virtual world.

Im pretty much for nearly all sorts of games - but I just... no, this game is just over the line. There are limits to every rule and this game pretty much crosses it in my oppinion.

Unrelated: New capcha system? I like.

You do know the game has been out for 5 years right? Everything that can be said about the game has already been said.

OT: I wouldn't mind if this thread was made 5 years ago but at this point making a thread about a game that is 5 years old banned in most countries and is probably not half as bad as most free flash games you can find using Google seems pretty redundant. I suppose on to my answer I suppose I have to go with no. We have no problem with ridiculously violent games so why should be care about this(I am being sarcastic)? You can't have a double standard. I know it can be argued rape is worse than murder but when you have people dying to play games like Postal, Mortal Kombat and Gears that have over the top violence etc then to complain about this just doesn't make sense to me.

I've seen some footage of it. For a game about molesting young women, it's surprisingly customizable. You can take out all the nudity.

Also, it's really not that... rapey. From what I've seen, the worst part is the stalking. It's more of just a weird Japanese sex game than a rape game.

Basically, it's not as bad as people are making it out to be. If they would have taken out the "rape" part, no one would have really cared.

I vote "don't care".

Why is a game where you rape people so much worse than a game where you murder people? If we allow this to be banned on the grounds "people might do it irl" we only feed the idea that FPS are murder simulators.

Im all for freedom of expression but this is a game about raping kids, c'mon.

The thing I will say is that it might keep people who otherwise would commit such crimes off of the street but still, it's a game about raping kids.

Answer to poll: I don't know, I can see reasons for it to not be banned but at the same time..it's a game about raping kids.
