So, I was opening my X-Com: Enemy Unknown Special Edition box for the PC (which I still didn't have time for to play), when the smell of paper (well carton, technically) greeted me. Which reminded me again that smell is a powerful impulse and that I miss paper/carton. Damn you, digital era.

I miss opening those big carton game boxes back in the day. I miss flipping through paper game magazines. And the smell keeps reminding me.

Do you miss the smell of paper?

New consoles should spray new game smell everytime something is downloaded. I also remember the early PS3 games having a kinda coconut smell.

If I missed the smell of paper, it'd mean I wasn't at work anymore. Which could either be a good or a bad thing. I'm sick of it, anyway. Hate the smell. New paper, old paper, archival, magazine, newsprint, acidic, parchment, vellum... whatever kind of paper it is, I hate it. Makes me think I'm at work and I automatically start looking at books in terms of value and rarity and not as entertainment. It's frustrating.

I still prefer to read paper copies of books, though. Much easier on my eyes and on my hands. For some reason.

In games, not so much. I generally don't have any reason to miss the smell of paper seeing as I'm still more inclined to read a paper copy of a book than go all digital with it.

I love the smell but I don't really get to miss it, seeing as I never stopped reading books.

I don't care for buying digital for a ton of different reasons so I still get that smell myself

I've never been a fan of new paper, it just smells like chemicals. Old books, however, have a smell I can never give up. Something to do with the way acidic paper breaks down, apparently it starts releasing good smelling stuff like vanillin.

Old vinyl record sleeves have it too, but I have yet to find any other electronic device with a comparable smell. Even my older PC game boxes, which you'd think would have the smell, don't. I don't know if it's a different kind of paper used in the cardboard, if there's not enough of it, or what.

Old paper smells nice. Like from an old book with yellowing pages.

New paper, not so much.

Not quite, I mean I can still get that smell from printing paper, magazine and new books.

I miss games having decent manuals. Those things made for the best bathroom reading. Don't miss the smell though.

I think the better question to ask here is: What does paper smell like to you?

Thus begins the paradox of describing sensations.

Not so much for games, but I miss it for music. I've recently started collected vinyl records and I love the old, musty smell of the yellowing paper. Reminds me of all the books in my grandfather's home office when I was a kid. Smells like that stick with you. Same reason I love the smell of tobacco, grass and gasoline!
