No, because my physical appearance does not match up with the stereotype.
Aside from my glasses, neither does mine. People often just think that being a gamer means that, despite evidence to the contrary, I must look and act like the stereotype, a problem I think a lot of people have.

What? I've never once been bullied for gaming. Near everyone is at minimum casual gamers now.

Well, in a girl's dorm, people assume that because I play video games, I don't mind them spoiling EVERY show they're watching in the lounge!
No, its not OK for you to be using my PS2 to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No, I don't want to join you, because you spoiled the last two seasons three days ago! Urk.

There is no stigma anymore. Games are very much a mainstream form of entertainment. Everybody plays games these days. It's the fourth pillar of mass-media pop entertainment, along with movies, television and music.
Where do you live? Can I come and live there?
In the year 2010.
Well played.
I wouldn't really say it was, on account of the fact he didn't give a good answer. Just because gaming is a very successful form of entertainment does not mean there isn't a stigma. There isn't, as has already been said, any prejudice against you if you play the main stream titles like Call of Duty, but for other people the problem remains.
To be honest, I think the negative reactions people apparently give towards gamers has more to do with the person in question than the kinds of games they play.

Actually there is still a massive stigma around gaming and I can't believe think otherwise. Unless you game console and play mainstream games people still look at you wierd. Everyone in my school thinks that consoles are better than PCs at CoD because the graphics and controls superior. Bit of a facepalm there but the latter can be a bit of opinion.

Seriously try talk about Beyond Good and Evil or Team Fortress2 and unfortunately most people won't know what t he fuck your on about. No one in my school had even heard of any controversy around MW2 and most bought it because it was hyped. So the moral is if you want your game to sell on consoles screw the informed community just stick a label on it and just hype it up up and away.

Well if youre sitting around playing japanese dating sims and rape games of coursee there is a stigma, but its nothing to do with being a gamer.

Out of all the games I own not one has ever caused a reaction of "You play that" "Ewww"

Exactly. People seem to think pretending that everybody accepts games now, the problem will go away. If a game isn't mainstream and "cool" then people think it must suck, and as such think the person in question is weird. Teams Fortress 2 is, in my opinion, far better then CoD or Halo. But no one would believe that, because its not on Xbox 360 and you don't have real guns in it.

I'm sure you've all seen it happen. A kid getting picked on because he would rather play some Super Mario Brothers than football. Or someone being excluded just because of the type of game they play. Yes, I'm sure everyone here is aware of The Stigma of Gaming. We have all been there, treated differently because of our hobby. It may seem like things like what I referred to are just cases of childish bullying, but I think the problem is more serious. Serious as in, this.

I read recently of someone being rejected from a job for no good reason. What was the reason? They were a gamer.

I don't know what sort of job it was, nor does it mater. The point was, it was deemed perfectly acceptable to deny some one work simply because of their hobby. And the thing is, it is apparently quite common. While the game in question was World of Warcraft, this stigma branches out to gaming as a whole.

What I want to ask you, The Escapist, is if you have experienced the stigma and why you think in this day and age it can be such a problem. Why should a gamer be considered any lesser than other? Why is it that so often they are?

basically this.

every "gamer" i knew grewing up we all did everything. we were the kids who were the athletes/straight A students and gamed a shit ton. i hardly had time for anything else

so now a days, mostly everyone i know who games, does game alot, but also isn't a fucking pile so we get out and play sports together usually 2-3 times a week, and if not im at the gym in my spare time outside of work and gaming.

hell most the people i know are jealous they can't do what i can do (they might be able to, but they are jealous nonetheless) , my football player roommate is asking me to build him a computer soon and im gonna teach him a thing or two in the process, and he is truly a huge meathead and he has not once called me a douchebag or said anything bad in the process, so really this stigma..

not in my lifetime. and not in my area.

Ya. Me and a bunch of other gamers protested but they kept blasting us with water at released attack dogs on us. It was horrible.

not saying there isn't a problem, just showing that in my section of the earth, where it is 200, this never happens and hasn't happened in god knows how long.

if it does happen, its not because your a gamer, its most likely everything else that stimulates anything about the stereotype.

No, because nowadays everybody plays video games. I guess plenty of girls (not being sexist or anything) think they're silly or immature. I like to point out to them that thinking worse of somebody in order to bolster your own ego is pretty much the most immature thing ever.

My mum will occasionally casually mention how if such and such an activity where rendered in pixels id have no difficulty completing it without embarrassing myself, however thats more often because I'm clumsy. She's not unjustified, i once destroyed her bathroom by tripping backwards into the thin side of a door, and tearing the shelves and cabinets out of the wall in attempt to catch myself.

when i was in high school a football player commented negativity on my D&D habit, he stopped when i commented on the fantasy football league i saw he and his father leaving one night.

more often insults come from lack of gaming skill, at least in my circle of acquaintance. for example i give my brother shit for not being able to beat the tutorial level on metroid prime for the wii.

Ya but girls also don't appreciate my dick jokes so I just assume it's a difference in taste.
