If the third option was meant to be "Don't Care," because I don't think we're talking about the Spanish courtesy title of a male, a crime leader, the action of putting on clothing, et cetera...

Nonetheless: I've watched a bit of Tales of Symphonia, played ToS 2 fully, played around 3 hours of Tales of Abyss and I find it rather dull. Then again, I can't really get attached to the characters who defy many ideas of logical idea--especially the hair.
And through my while of watching anime, they seemed rather cliche to me. *Shrug*

I'e played Symphonia, PhantasiA, and Vesparia. Symphoniais my favorite and one of my favorite games on the gamecube.

Favorite Game:Symphonia
Favorite Scene: The Fight between Lloyd and Kratos. A close second was the reveal of the true intentions of Remiel and Kratos's secret.
Favorite Characters: I liked everybody ( though I hated Zelos's fashion taste). I especially like Lloyd, Sheena, Genis and Raine.
Best Villians: The Desian 4 Grand Cardinals were just too epic. Fighting them felt like being in a shounen manga ( You know, the Sorting Algorithm of Evil)
Best Weird Scene: The Beach Scene at that hotel.
Best Ending: ???

I really don' feel like I can get into the later games though. The chaacter designs just seem a bit too off edge ( Seriously, what is the main girl in Xillia even wearing? And what the hell is that giant black puppet thing?)

The weird, recurring side-story of the half-caste elves (with the elves outright defined as the Japanese in the first game), and how its changed throughout the series as social norms and expectations have changed in Japan amuses me greatly. Someone on the dev team clearly thinks a lot about about interracial marriage.

Hmmm... gotta love talking swords from Tales of Destiny. That's right, the US didn't get the first tales game in tales of symphonia, but destiny 1 and 2! It always irked me how we didn't get symphonia on PS2 like japan did, because I've had a long-standing grudge against nintendo for failing utterly in the rpg department, and symphonia was always the game I looked at and pondered, "should I buy a gamecube for this single shining star of a game?".

Ultimately, I never did, so symphonia is the tales game that got away...

But I shall always have the playstation tales games, one of the greatest collections of rpgs ever.

As for my favorite characters: Definately Yuri. Seriously, he gets what needs to be done, done and has a dog that kicks major butt.

Tales of the Abyss was one of the coolest stories that was told. Plus the anime for it was pretty spot on. The tales of vesperia anime was a crazy awesome prequel that is well worth watching.

As far as the tales games being /just/ like the star ocean games... they have some simular aspects, but they are far from the same. That's like calling Legend of the Dragoon /just/ like Shadow Hearts because the ring system for combat is simular.

I've only played Vesperia, and I didn't even get to beat it, but it was spectacular.

I simply love the Tales series. My favourite game is a tough decision. Tales of Symphonia will always have a special place in my heart for being the first game I got to play. However I think I have to go with Vesperia. I love the characters, I love the story, I love the graphics and I love the gameplay.

My sister is a huge fan of the series and I watched her play Vesperia, I loved what I saw but the combat didn't really appeal to me, I have a 3DS and I hope to pick up a copy of Tales of the Abyss while I am vacationing here in America.

I did love Raven a lot though, he was hilarious.
Uhm, the 3DS is region locked and Tales of The Abyss was released in Europe. Judging from your profile you're better off not buying it in USA unless your 3DS is imported.
I got my 3DS here in America, so I am fine.

In that case it's cool. However if you don't like the combat in Tales of Vesperia then there's a good chance you wont like Tales of the Abyss either. I love it though and consider it the best 3DS game there is.
I didn't play much of Vespiria myself (as I said, I watched my sister play it) and haven't given the combat a real tackle yet, my sister absolutely loves Abyss and Vespiria (she is currently playing Synphonia) and I want to give the series a real try.

I plan to get Tales of Innocence R on Vita (when I get one) is it any good?
In that case I would recommend trying Tales of the Abyss. However I am too much of a fan of the series to actually give you an objective answer. I haven't had the chance to try Tales of Innocence R, but I have played a little of the original on the DS. I'd say it's the lowest ranking Tales game of the ones I have played, but it's still a pretty good game. If you come across Tales of the Abyss and decide to give it a try I hope you'll like it as much as I do.

I've only played Symphonia, Symphonia:DotNW, and Abyss, so far, so my answers will likely change as I play more...but here they are for the moment.

Favorite game) Tales of Symphonia. Still one of my favorite games overall, in fact.

Favorite scene) ...huh. Hard to say. Maybe the things that happen post-Akzeriuth in Tales of the Abyss, just for being the only part of a game that ever made me cry out of horror.

Favorite characters) I'm a huge devotee of Colette. Strong secondary vote for Zelos. And Jade should really go without saying.

Character relationships) Emil and Marta. Hands down. Extra points for neither being oblivious to the other's feelings (serious props to Emil especially), Emil actually calling Marta out for her unrealistic idealization of him, being an actually decent love triangle, and...well, just generally being the best part of a game I already would have really liked.

Best Villains) I'm not qualified to judge, really. I'd probably go with Richter.

Weird Scene) "Anyone who opens this charm will be cursed with months of diarrhea, vomiting, and the Lord of Demons shoving his finger up their nose." Plus the twist.

Best Ending) Hard to say. I've only gotten two, so far.

Other) "I, who stands in the full light of the heavens, commands thee, who opens the gates of Hell! Come forth, divine lightning!

This ends now!

INDIGNATION!

Well, I am heading to the Florida mall tomorrow, so I will have a look for Tales of the Abyss (and Theatrythm Final Fantasy) Wish me luck in finding a copy! I do hope to get into it, I would like a good traditional JRPG on the 3DS, can't wait for Kingdom Hearts but that's hardly a traditional RPG.
Good luck finding it. I spent 3 months trying to get it myself, but Tales games have always been hard to get in Europe. Hopefully you'll find it without too mu of a hassle.

This might get me crucified, but despite my love for JRPGs...I've never played a Tales game. I think the new one that's coming out (Xillia) looks cool, though, so I'll definitely need to give them a try.

I picked up Tales of Graces F this year. I am a big fan of JRPGs, but after about 7-10 hours (when they grow up in the game) I really wasn't having fun, and stopped playing it. I kind of felt like I wasn't doing too much in the combat system. It felt simplistic.

Now let me qualify this with saying I don't think I gave the game a fair shot, honestly. If you could recommend me a Tales game, I'd love to try it. Which one would you recommend to a newcomer of the series?
Tales of Graces f is packed full of references to a great many other Tales games. Eternia, Phantasia, Symphonia, Vesperia, Destiny, Hearts, Innocence, and others all have references somewhere in the game. To be honest, I would hold off on Graces until you've played some of the others first. I would honestly recommend Symphonia to get you into the series. Destiny would be a good choice, too(Destiny was my entry into the series). I'd recommend Abyss after one or both of those. I'm really not a fan of Symphonia's sequel, but do play Symphonia, that game is gold.

Favorite game: Tales of Symphonia
Favorite scene: Too many awesome scenes to really pick one
Favorite Characters: Zelos Wilder, Jade Curtiss, Pascal
Character Relationships: Luke and Tear, Zelos and Sheena, Stahn and Rutee, Sophie and Malik
Favorite Villian: Vandesdelca Musto Fende
Favorite Weird Scene: I'm going with a funny one instead. Tales of Symphonia spa scene
Best Ending: Tales of Symphonia's

Me? Like the Tales series? Ha. Of course not. My avatar most certainly isn't one of the skit pics from Tales of Symphonia. /blatant lies

So, let's see. Favorite game would have to be Symphonia, with Vesperia at a close second.

But it's really quite hard to pick a favorite scene, so... eh. Perhaps when Kratos goes all stabby on Kvar in Tales of Symphonia?

My favorite characters tend to be the snarky ones: so Jade and Yuri. I also quite like Judith, Sheena, Raven, and Guy.

I do, however, feel like the canon couples/romantic pairings tend to be the least interesting character relationships in the games. So I'll pick friendships: Flynn and Yuri, Sheena and Zelos (though that one's kinda romantic... kinda), Kratos and Lloyd, and Rita and Estelle.

But the best villain is Dhaos. I mean... he's just so ridiculously over-the-top and villainous, while still retaining that tragic, "he's doing the wrong things for the right reasons" grey morality that I like about the Tales series games. A close runner-up goes to Duke, for being much more serious while retaining the same sympathy.

Weird scenes: any of the spa scenes. Any of them.

Endings... are not something that the Tales series excels at. I'll admit it. But the best one out of those that I've played has been Abyss... which, funnily enough, is also one of my least-favorite of the Tales games that I've played.
