Well, I think they ought to look over the prices a bit... Seeing as one item costs about half as much as the entire game.

Seriously? Have you any idea how much that would shred gaming in general?

But yeah, prices: Too high. It's meant to be micro- transactions.

Apart from the hats which are expensive (to keep their ingame value) everything is very reasonably priced and can also be unlocked by random drops, I think it's perfectly fair for valve to do this, the last three year of content have been free, and this is merely a means for the more impatient among us to access it.

Everything is almost fine because you can get almost everything game changing for free.
I haven't even played since the polycount update came out and I have most of the weapons.

Except the hats needed to get full set buffs is incredibly fucking stupid. Rare items should not give buffs/nerfs to gameplay, however minuscule, keep them cosmetic.

So I saw the new store feature for TF2, and thought, "Cool," until I saw that you actually pay your own money for the weapons and hats. I was expecting in-game cash for killing players, getting dominations, or winning matches.

So what I'm asking is...
This thread popped up days ago by someone else. You can pay to remove the grind, but there's no drawback to not buying stuff, especially if you already have all the items.

Besides, what with the usually RIDICULOUS Steam sales, I think Valve is entitled to a bit of extra cash.
Seconded pretty damn hard. Ghost Master for £3, and both the Deus Ex games for under £5 a while ago.

I'm all for it, it gives them moneyz, and gives people something to enjoy the game more with, but doesn't take anyhting away from the non payers. I've got a newby account, only somehting like 2 weapon unlocks and one of the hats, and I never founf it annoying when everyone else had mad lewtz, so it won't really annoy anyone for gameplay reasons.

I can't see it going away as some suspect, because it's such a low maintainence thing for them and can bring in dough for absoloutely no work on their part.

What do you mean 'shred gaming'? Thats how the new COD is going to operate, and doesn't counter strike work that way? (haven't played it since the original half life, so I may be wrong)

Because CS:S and COD doesn't offer permanent buffs. TF2's buffs come from permanent layout, rather than temporary skill.
Also CS:S/COD matches are timed/completion finishes. TF2 can keep going for ages + be reset at any time.

Given the amount of hassle this update alone has caused, that's what I mean by "shred".

Already crafted some new stuff, so that's ok.
The only things I may buy are the Rocket Jumper (For 29p) and the Direct Hit (To craft the Black Box) again, for 29p. So, I pay 58p for two new things? I'm cool with that.

Valve is getting on the micro-transaction bus. I don't see a problem. The bigger problem is how exactly there going to balance the game. Each new weapon is a new plate to spin and TF2 room is getting kind of crowded. Still, vintage hats... OH the glory of vintage Whiskered Gentleman, how I love thee.

Half life 3 doesn't fund itself. I;m just saying.

The whole thing will fail miserably and will be scrapped soon IMO.
Don't think so, I was playing before and already I saw quite a few people running around with paid for weapons. Not to mention I'm pretty sure the tf2 blog post mentioned that it was the community that called for this. You can still get all the items in drops, buying them just speeds it up. My only problem so far is the pricing seems a bit off.

I might buy something cheap for the hat, but thats really it. The game is more fun earning things.

Why they're doing it? Oh, you know...

One of the interesting side effects of shipping free updates for Team Fortress 2 over the years has been a large and devoted group of people who write us asking if they can simply buy game items directly. We also get regular feedback from the bean counters on our fourth floor, who -- after watching with tooth-grinding irritation as we shipped over 120 free updates to a three-year-old game -- gently suggested that we "make some f$*&ing money already."

Then it hit us: it'd make everybody happy if we really DID let players buy items directly. Players'd be happy because we actually listened to them for once, and the bean counters would be happy because in-game stores are the future of everything, including making some f$*&ing money already.

So if you think it's bad, you can blame the bean counters for being such large extremely precise areas.
