I might be the only person on the internet who's glad TF2 is free. I just started instaling it earlier. I can't wait to start playing.
Clearly you haven't read this thread :3
OP seems to be getting a lot of hate, and rightly so.

I agree we should have gotten a better compensation.
I think I payed 12 euro,s for the game (60 for the orange box /5=12 per game) maybe 20$ of store credit?
Well, you bought the game at discount since it was in the Orange Box, so for your approximately 12 dollars you got not just that hat, but ALL your hats, and your rare items, and those 12 euros let you play it before it was free, AND you get to be a premium member for the rest of forever, so you get all the benefits that entails from now until forever. You don't know yet whether or not they'll release premium-player-only content (perhaps more hats) later, so all that is still paid for by the 12 dollars you paid something like 4 years ago.

Did you have fun playing the game? Hasn't the time you spent up until now been worth the 12 dollars?
you,re right but I hope they release something better then hat,s.

So? We get more noobs to pwn.

Shit, What is it with some people. We should be glad that TF2 is still getting updates after 6 years. And still people will whine and ***** about everything. It's just sad.

You know what? I'll get on board with that. I am almost 100% sure they will, since anything hat/action/rare weapon related is all premium-only. I'd consider anything they release as premium-only content to be my reward for playing this long. In fact, one thing I noted is that although they said that you can't get rare weapons/items from the crafting if you're a free member, they also said that MOST things are not rare. I'd take this as a hint that they may be adding more rare loot at a later date, in order to both encourage people to upgrade and to reward the long-standing community members who bought before the Uber Update. Even though we'd still have to find it through the random drops, I'd still consider that a gift to me for purchasing should I stumble across one.

EDIT: Yeah, I realize that the definition of 'Rare' means that not many items would be rare, but I think that in this case they could still add a few later on and still unironically call them rare. There are craptons of items, so a few more items can be added with reduced drop rates and still be called 'rare items' with a straight face.

Yeah, but every drop would be stuck on the account that found it. You can only receive items if you're a free member. So in order to farm like you've described, you'd have to buy a few items in the store for every character you make, THEN farm the items. If you do that, Valve doesn't give a shit how many characters you make, you gave them money for the privilege.

And before you get any ideas about trolling with your tons of accounts, remember that this is Valve, and they've thought of that. They're looking for people doing that and you'll most likely get the Banhammer for it. Not worth it, IMO.

You know they could have at least given us a decent looking hat. Just saying, the only class it works with is Soldier.

The thing that's annoying me is with the mass flooding of Newbies joining, is the servers are stressing out trying to load everything.

Hey, just starting this with a bit of a rant. I love TF2. It's one of my favourite games. Well, it WAS. Since September 30, 2010, The MannConomy update, TF2 has been on a slippery slope to complete ruin. Today, it's finally happened.
TF2 is dead.
First, it started with the items.
Being able to buy them.
The constant, neverending stream of crappy, pointless community items with only miniscule, barely noticeable stat changes.
More and more and more items, completely burying us under pointless community content.

The final straw came today.

The Uber update introduced free to play forever. Team Fortress 2 is now open to the public to play forever for free.

Now, every server is crammed with hundreds of people who, in all likelihood, have no interest whatsoever in the game. Most times, when you get a new player, they want to get better, want to get good at the game, want to actually do something with themselves. When a game is free to play, however, a time dreaded by most who already own it, this is when the absolute assclowns and griefers come out to play. They don't care about doing well or getting better, they didn't pay a cent, they just want to ruin it for everyone else. What do they care? They didn't pay for it.

The thing that I take offense to the most, though, is what they decided to offer those who already paid for the game.

We get a hat.
We ALL get a hat. The same hat.

This hat is just an insult. When other games have become free to play, they offered some sort of compensation to the people who actually paid the $20 for it. We get a hat. They're insulting us. They're waving their bloody item system, the start of all this crap, in our faces and taunting us for actually caring enough to pay for it.

(p.s. There ARE differences between free and paid for games. Paid for [you have to pay at least $1] get to wear hats. That's about it)
I totally agree.

The long time supporters of TF2, (such as myself) should have been treated a bit better.
I personally had bought a hard copy of the game, and bought items from the Mann & Co. store so all I'm supposed to get for my continued support for the game is a hat that we all got??
I don't think you're overreacting at all dude. The F2P thing is just a huge promotional movement for Valve to sell more hats to people over TF2. It reinforces the idea that Valve are just a huge, emotionless money making machine who cares very little for their supporters.

Let me just translate what the OP is probably saying.

"Waaah, I've paid 20$ (or probably much less than that) years ago and got literally hundreds of hours of enjoyment. But the game went free, so now I want compensation for the meager amount of money I paid so long ago. This is EXACTLY like an MMO going free, because you don't pay the equivalent of TF2's price every month to play those. Also, the system for unlocked items that you can either unlock or buy is worse than other systems where only people with money can have new items. Much worse. Also, I am the original Valve fan, so they should cater to me and me alone. Maybe my friends too. But anyway, Valve isn't allowed to get new fans, ever."

That's what tour post sounds like to me. I disagree strongly with your opinion, but I'm sure you can find many like-minded people on tué Steam forums, sadly.

Bwahaha, you're joking right? The orange box was £30 for Half Life 2, Episode 1/2, Portal and TF2. Five fully fleshed out games for £30, and you want store credit? Grow up. Almost every game in the orange box has gone on sale for about 99p at some point or another, did you want store credit for those other games too? Maybe a full refund is in order. ¬¬
£15 when I got it over Steam and I don't think I bought it that long after it was released. But I am tempted to quit forever and demand my money back because it was my birthday yesterday and Valve haven't sent me a card with a gift voucher of at least £10 value. It's as good a reason as the OP has.

Grow a pair.

Seriously, your entitled mindset is depressing and indicative of western excesses. Valve have spent however many years since the release of this game supporting the hell out of it and they'll continue. You have consumer rights, but you seem to think that others shouldn't.

Well guess what, F2P adopters are consumers too, with the same rights as you.

Also, I'm sure you've played an F2P game before. So you're the thing you hate.

Looks like it is finally time to graduate from the pubs.

Ah, clans, premium servers, commitment. Really depends how long the griefers last.

(I wonder if l4D will go F2P?)

Am I the only person who sees players on free weekends (and now this) as extra cannon fodder?
I don't think this is a bad thing. Sure more compensation would be nice but it isn't going to change that much for me.

I bought the game a few months ago and it's one of the absolute best games I've ever played. I don't even like FPS online multiplayer games and always had a bit of a habit of avoiding them. This game amazed me completely.

So when the new update came out and I saw it free to play, I was happy, now I can convince more people to give it a try and it was great to see a company that doesn't try to milk you for every cent they can. It was a good idea and it will extend the lifespan of the game so much.

But hey, fuck that, I'll be a greedy and self-entitled whiner instead, right? They don't owe you jack shit buddy, you have a great game already.

A few points.

1. You don't have to buy items if you don't want to. Get the fuck over that for a start. If it's the game you enjoy so much, play the damn game, don't claim that charging money for useless items is an 'insult'.

2. F2P seems to me to have only increased the number of noobs I play with. Which is kinda fun to be honest. It also means those of us who have bought it and found everyone else on the game to be way too good for our very average skills now have someone we can win against.

3. For me, this one is the biggest and dumbest claim: "IT'S UNFAIR THAT WE HAD TO PAY FOR IT BUT NOW ANYONE CAN PLAY IT FREE OF CHARGE." No, it's NOT unfair (unless you bought it within the last month for example, then yeah, it's a tad unfair and I hope you get some sort of compensation.) It just means that you perceived it to have financial value. If they hadn't released it as F2P, YOU wouldn't have gained any money, and probably neither would Valve. Similarly, releasing it as F2P doesn't cost you anything more, and it stands a chance of making Valve more money through a larger number of people using micro-transactions - and Steam.

4. Griefers will not have increased much at all in frequency or number. I mean if you're a griefer you've probably pirated the damn thing in the first place, or purchased it when it was $5, played for a bit to get your skill up, and then went griefing. Either way, the number of people interested enough to download a 10Gb game just to grief are probably few and far between.
