For those of you who don't know Tiananmen square is a large center in Beijing, China that was built centuries ago and still stands today. (although it is mostly deserted due to the amount of guards and cameras, seriously it's eerie.)

The short version of The Tiananmen Square Massacre was in 1989 mass groups of Chinese college students gathered in Tiananmen square to protest for political reform and to bring more (lol there wasn't any to start with) democracy to China.

Long version: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989

The purpose of this thread is mostly to educate those who are unaware of this event as the Chinese government have gone way out of the way to cover this up, so much to a point that our society has given up trying to rub it in China's face.
I mostly got the idea after watching Spongebob in China for the millionth time and reading all the people denouncing it as "OMFG RACIST RAGERAGERAGERAGE!111!1" (Anyone who really thinks that is an ignorant fuck who knows nothing about how the Chinese government works, just incredibly dull or apathetic.)

So I don't believe I've seen The Escapist discuss this before... So discuss.

China is a communistic government. Thus it doesn't work.
This is to be expected. But once you hit the point were you kill your own citisens it's time to leave the country.

Its important for America and the rest of the world to have China as a pool of cheap labor and 1.2 billion plus hungry mouths. We need them to fall in line for as long as the rest of the world can properly exploit them. If China's people in power want to keep it this way and the rest of the world continues to benefit, its all the better.

...no offense, man, but it's not like many many people weren't alive at the time. Quite a few people remember it. And it's not like it's a secret that the Chinese Government is slightly oppressive of its people. Pretty sure they're aware of it. As to whether censoring information is wrong? Every government does it, as does every individual. But, after a certain time (occasionally immediately), information does need to come out.

Um, the Chinese people are quite aware of what happened at Tiananmen Square. And it was quite crowded when I was there.

I guess it depends how you look at it.

No ones pointed out the Irony of the squares translated name yet so I think I will. It means "the Square of Heavenly peace." The Chinese government is crazy.

The current model of Chinese government can not survive much longer. As the Chinese economy grows it will have to become more global. The government will either thrust its country into poverty or loosen its hold on its people.

Indeed. And this is why all those people who always predict WWIII between America and China in those endless doomsday threads are wrong. Nobody wants to mess with this nicely symbiotic relationship of mutual exploitation.
