This isn't gonna be me ranting at this, cause frankly myself I couldn't give two fucks what words he uses.

But this is a question for Escapist people...specifically the homosexual ones if there are any here.

The question is: do you get offended and/or annoyed when Yahtzee casually uses the term '******' in his reviews?

Examples are in the Web of Shadows review: "it feels like the red suit is forced to stay in tidying up while the black suit goes out to beat up faggots."

and the Demon's Souls review: "Pause? What kind of ****** are you!?"

aaaaand the Mirror's Edge review: "if you can excuse the ammount of faggotry in that sentence."

now as i said at the start of the post, I don't care about the seemingly semi-derogatory use of this word in his reviews, even though I'm gay. it just doesn't bother me.

but do any of you get somewhat offended when he uses the word in this sort of context?

I'm gay, and it doesn't offend me. Yahtzee's style is to be offensive to everybody, so what's the point in singling out one term? If he wasn't so creatively vulgar, he wouldn't be nearly as funny.

I think you can only make an argument over that last instance, the others were sarcastic, but maybe that sort of context just doesn't offend me.

No. It's not being used to insult gay people, so there's no meaning behind it, and therefore not offensive.

No, not really. I only don't like the word if it's used in a hateful sense towards someone who's homosexual.

The word "******" or "fag" doesn't really come off as an insult towards gays anymore, rather just an insult towards someone in general like calling them a "dick" or something like that.

It's a bit ridiculous to be offended by it in this point in time unless it's directed towards someone who is gay in a hateful and intolerant sense.

Um...yeah...why did you single out that specific term exactly out of the countless ones from Yahtzee's videos?

I don't feel it's really all that offensive since he doesn't seem to be using it as a direct insult against Homosexuals.

It was mentioned to me by a gay friend of mine after I recommended Yahtzee to him. He noticed Yahtzee's first use of the word and made a big deal of it. I figured it was interesting that he got so pissed off with the word but I didn't, so I thought I'd make this topic, like the desperate online-attention-seeking loser that I am.

I've never noticed him say it actually. I might if I was gay, and I'd probably be offended by his use of the word "****" if I was female. But I'm neither.

Never really noticed it.

All that should matter isn't the word, but the context in which it is used.

Agreed, and ****** isn't used to address gay people in most cases.

Nah. I figure he mostly uses it facetiously.
Like, half because he's just trying to be offensive, and half because he's mocking the kind of people who actually do use it.

This is what I assume, anyway.

If it doesn't bother you then why does this thread exist? I'm for a good discussion and all, but why "******" when we could look at other vulgarities our favourite British misanthorpe spouts out, like "****" - a very popular choice for Yahtzee - for instance.

This I agree with. The real problem with shock humour is that it is either done well or done poorly: no middle of the road here. If done well your laughing too hard to see the offense. However, if done poorly it comes off as either deeply offensive or immature. I'm in the boat that believes that Yahtzee is talented in using the refuge in Audacity/Vulgarity tropes to succeed at creating shock humour without being deeply offensive.

The way to rob words of their offensive potential is to use them over and over and thus deny their power to shock.

I know gay people who call themselves "******" so I figure it's okay.

I find him too funny to really start deconstructing it for things which would offend me.

If I did I might wonder, but then again he's an equal opportunity abuser, which I kind of see as permissable in some weird fucked up way. It's the same as Frankie Boyle. If he singled out one group for persecution I wouldn't like him, or if there was one group he stayed away from it would make him look hypocritical, but he abuses everyone equally.

Which is what Yahtzee does, which is why I just let it slide. Also, I don't think there's genuine malevolence, just cynicism and a caustic nature.

Fortunately, Yahtzee (Unlike people like Jeff Dunham) has grasped the difference between being offensive and obnoxious, and actually being funny, so no, I'm not offended or insulted.
