Play army of two 40th day. It's third person but you have no reticle if firing from the hip, using the iron sights (aiming down the barrel) gives a reticle but slows running.

I prefer just shooting. Maybe it is because the shooters I played were mainly Unreal Tournament and Counterstrike 1.5/1.6 but it just seems like more action is involved.

And games don't need realism. When I want realism I go to, you know, the real world.
Games need good gameplay, the rest is secondary.

Even if it doesn't benefit me I still enjoy using iron-sights. It adds to my immersion because when I fire a gun IRL I use them. If I weren't allowed to aim properly in a game I'd just feel like I was doing it wrong and it'd break the game in my opinion.

However, I only enjoy it when it's an FPS. If I'm playing the game looking over my character's shoulder, then suddenly I'm snapped to iron-sights when I aim that's just stupid. If you're playing a game from a third-person perspective, keep the zoom function or whatever for aiming. If it's played in the first-person perspective, then please for the love of god give me my precious iron-sights.

Understand thar I've only actually used this in Fallout. To which, I think it was helpful enough. Why not? I've actually shot at things in real life.

It works when it fits. For the relatively more realistic games, it fits, because in real life soldiers are trained to use the sights. But in things like TF2, there's really no reason to have it if you can just make it accurate from the hip. Which you can.
But they're also trained not to keep walking and standing up while shooting. It's just a gameplay mechanic designed to measure how prepared a player is.

They establish an interesting dichotomy. If you aren't using iron sights in a game that has them, you can move faster but shoot less accurately. If you are using them, you move more slowly but shoot more accurately. A player has to constantly decide which of those advantages he wants at the moment. I hardly think that they're necessary for every FPS, but they're a solid game mechanic in their own right.

I don't mind either way.

On the one hand, I'll happily use iron sights if they're there. On the other hand, I've never missed them in games that don't have them.

So yeah... I'm bi-sightual.

Not much of an FPS guy, but i'm not a big fan of them. Ironically it seems to take the aiming out of the game...

Maybe that's only call of duty though.

Seems to me that it's how you would aim a gun in real life. If that makes some games look a bit alike, so be it.

Unless you're playing a totally non-realistic game (e.g. TF2), crosshairs have no business being in the game. If you want to fire from the hip, you do it blindly... you know... like you would for real. So yeah. In realistic games, no crosshairs and iron sights / optics. In non-realistic games, any combination of the two. The only time I can see a "realistic" game using a crosshair is when you're in some sort of cyberpunk game and you've got a direct optic-link with the ballistics computer in your gun! Which would be really cool.

I have TERRIBLE aim so iron sights really help. As long as they are not too big (but not so small that I can never see them against the bland brown/gray background), I find them useful and non-intrusive to the game.

You can argue that it's not realistic all you want, but ultimately, it's a game, not combat. If I wanted to really learn to shoot things, I'd get a gun license and go to a firing range.

I actually prefer iron sights over crosshairs. I often take the crosshairs off and just use iron sights, if possible. I would agree that the presence of one of them makes the other one somewhat unnecessary. Maybe games should just choose one or the other, but I guess it's nice to have options.

No one has yet brought up the point that iron sights look cool - a lot nicer than positioning a white cross while aiming from the hip.

I think iron sighting is a good addition to games that want to be realistic to how you would actually use a gun.

Games that don't have iron sighting, and instead let you headshot a mouse from 100 meters away by shooting from the hip while running is down right rediculose. Thankfully, i don't know any games where aiming is like this, but you get what i'm doing there.

I would like to see a game where firing your gun from the hip is not only less accurate, but depending on what gun your using it should physically damage you as well. I'm pretty sure if you actually had a barret 50 cal sniper and shot it from the hip, you would lose both of your arms and probably blow a huge whole in your side as a bonus.

Whats the discussion really? In realistic shooters where IS exists you use em to aim better, if you got the time to get your eye to the sight.

Theres only games like MW that got ridicilous short duration from button click to accuracy-recovery. Defeats the purpose of having to choose to be able to fire directly but loose accuracy or gain accuracy but with added duration before you can fire properly.

Also, why is crossair enabled on so many games by default( with IS/ADS)

How ironsights in games should work: Decreased deviation and recoil at the cost of decreased movement speed. A situational tradeoff, not a universal positive or a necessity.

They have their place in "realistic" shooters so you atleast get some variance in gameplay, but they are annoying as fuck in anything fast paced.

I like them because that's how I learned to shoot in the real world. So having them in a game actually allows me to utilize my previous experience. I also tend to enjoy games that are somewhat realistic in terms of ballistics and weapon handling (like STALKER and such).

I like them in games which are fought at a significant distance, I.E. battlefield, but otherwise I find they slow the combat down too much.

I don't get why people dislike iron sights. It's not like games force you to use them to shoot. All they do is the exact same thing they do in real life: help you aim better.
So... they're basically forcing you to use them to shoot... otherwise you're at a distinct disadvantage. I mean, you don't have to use the sprint button, crouch key, melee weapon ect... but if they're in the game then it's been balanced around you using them, so even if you don't like the mechanics you need to use them to stand a chance.
