it's just a word. it can be used in a condescending manner, or it can be used in a neutral manner, or even a positive manner. It's all about context.
That's the most balanced view I've seen here. Thank you.

And I'm a chick. Or a chicky-babe, when I'm in the right mood. I have no problems with the word, as in Australia it's pretty much the female equivalent of "dude".

Would you be comfortable with females calling you a cock? If so, go ahead.
Learn about double standards. We're talking about 'chick' not 'cock' I wouldn't mind being called a 'chick'. Just because I'm a guy it changes to the masculine?

I use it, but I don't think it's offensive at all. It's like calling a bloke a "dude" only it's a girl so it's a "chick."

I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
I just went to say the exact same thing, but it looks like you beat me to it. I hardly see what's offensive about referring to a person in a casual, friendly manner.

I know it's offensive but I always use the word "chick". It makes a great verbal shorthand and doesn't come with the potential downsides that other single-syllable words have, like girl or babe.
It's not offensive. anyone who is "offended" by being called a chick, is just a feminist out of control looking for a reason to argue and spout her feminist rant. A word is nothing more than a vocal medium to convey meaning, therefore it is the meaning which is important, not the word used to convey that meaning. Considering that most people use "chick" to mean a woman, therefore, it is no more offensive than the word woman. If it is used to convey a condecension, or an insult, then that meaning is offensive, but this is not a condemnation of the word in general. many "politically correct" words can be used mockingly or as an outright insult, that doesn't mean that the word is itself insulting.
Words are very much like ideas in that the only people who fear them are small minded people.

I use it... But usually only jokingly such as in the phrase "chicks dig it when you (insert thing chicks probably don't dig here)"

Am I the only person who uses the term "gal" or "gals"? I don't like using chick, and girl doesn't sit well with me, so I refer to them as gals.

You've probably never heard of a woman being refered to as a 'slurry' before, either.
A mixture of insoluble liquids? I don't get it.

I usually use "dude" or "women". It's pretty inappropriate to refer to say, a group of nuns as "a bunch of chicks dressed as penguins" though.

When I hear 'chicks' I think of juvenile fluffy birds. I don't really use the word for anything else.

Considering some of my female friends call other females chicks, I think it's become too normal for it to be a problem. They don't seem to mind.

I usually say girl, unless I'm trying to be funny. Then I might use chick.

Never babes, though. Same reason that I don't call my girlfriend baby. It's so cheesy, even in joking.

I never really say it, as English is not my mothertongue.

I do sometimes type it out on the internet.

It started as slang for a woman who has unprotected sex with different partners over a short period... meaning she was full of a slurry of cum.

I tend to reserve "chick" and the like for a specific woman or group of women that I have little respect for.
More likely to use something like "dame" or "broad" in that kind of situation, though.

Otherwise, I usually say "lady".
