I got inspired by another thread where I initially wanted to post this, but this went a bit to far off topic. So I decided to make a new thread for it.

I know that there is a lot of end-of-world talk, but I am not specifically talking about Mayan calendar or biblical references. No, its more in a general sense. Also, for the record, I'm not paranoid and I do not worry about the end, because there is nothing you can to about it, if it should happen.

Also, saying 'end of the world' always sounded odd to me, because it's not the world that's ending (short of a super nova/black hole or massive meteors), but it's mankind that's ending. The world will probably be fine long after mankind bit the dust. Yeah, I know, it depends on your definition of the word 'world'.

Anyhow, to the actually topic. How do you think the world is gonna end?

I didn't have room to fit option 9: mankind is gonna live forever.

I personally hope something like 2012 happens, I like to think that if the Earth is gonna die, they go Overkill for shit's and giggles.

More than likely though it will be man-made ie Nuclear War

WWIII. Humanity is so xenophobic,it views humans of other ethnicities as aliens. We'll nuke the planet so hard it'll be naught but a steaming ball of glass.

I go for a combo: we squander natural resources, which leads to World War III. The rats, cockroaches and fungi are still fine, though.

Mankind will die out eventually, probably from infighting... but the world will not "end". The world may actually be better off.

Missing option: The sun, in the natural manner of all stars, will die. The earth will become uninhabitable.

Nuclear war won't exterminate humanity. Lack of resources won't end us. We will continue, we always do. Kinda like cockroaches, just a lot less lovable.

My biggest worry for the end of mankind is that we run out of oil and we don't have a backup plan in place so we just go back to the way the Amish lived except everybody has guns and canned foods and everyone's trying to kill their neighbors to steal their guns and canned foods until you have the biggest guns and canned foods empire.

I think the CURRENT world is going to end by way of 'accension' I.E. Humanity is visited upon by beings of a greater intelligence that teach humanity how STUPID it is being and allows them to 'evolve' into greater beings (that is, to become LESS stupid).

Plus, if it came to society having to rebuild itself to a self-sustainable state. The head of this society would be a yorkshireman.

Yorkshire! :D

I WOULD say nuclear war, if not for a simple problem - I expect missile shields to slowly become more common over the 21st century. My guess is that the age of nuclear weapons as a doomsday device is coming to an end, and I don't think much else can really kill us off. Diseases don't have a 100% fatality rate and leave infrastructure unscathed; the survivors of any super-disease could therefore rebuild relatively quickly. Asteroids can be deflected (not with nukes; there are already some theories on how to deflect asteroids using rockets, or even gravity). And natural disasters? The only event with a 100% fatality rate would be a gamma ray burst, which is staggeringly unlikely.

Therefore, resource squandering. Though I really, really hope we've expanded beyond the Earth before that becomes an issue.

None of the above.

And a more accurate poll question would be "the world isn't going to end, mankind will go extinct." Earth Abides. It always will, regardless of the supremacy of a species or the ending of said species-- to wit, the dinosaurs. The hypothesized meteorite wiped them out and severely damaged the ecosystem... and yet here we are today, a different dominant species with a very diverse ecosystem of our own.

The hubris of men...

Oh, and humanity will end not with a bang, but with a whimper.
