I was watching the news a while back and they had a story about how there is a movement to ban dodgeball across America, because in makes some kids feel like losers and they get hit in the head with a big red rubber ball. This is only a part of "the new PE" to pretty much ban competitive sports because it makes some kids feel like losers and they're humiliated. They've even made a PE hall of shame. On it is dodgeball, some other things, and (dear god!) musical chairs, because some people anticepate the music ending and some don't. If that doesn't convince you that they're crazy, they also have jumprope WITHOUT THE ROPE, and shadow tag, where to tag the person you step on their shadow. Hell, they showed one school with a no touching rule. The kids can't even give hi-fives or slap on the backs. So...(angry rage subsiding) what do you think.

Do the smart yet nonathletic get awards for being smart? Yes. So why shouldn't the athletic get an award for being athletic? Don't you think they feel dumb when smart kids get awards for their intelligence?

That's... not good. That's not good at all. Without competition that shows kids what it's like to win and to lose, some kids might grow up thinking that losing simply doesn't happen. Losing is just part of the learning process, don't people realize that?

Take America back to the days of yore that I've only heard about from my elders; the days when people were mocked for their lack of athleticism and humiliated for any weakness they exposed. It's so simple, and so effective.

I don't have any real hope of my generation being great, not with all these coddled "mommy didn't hug me enough and I don't like the color of the wallpaper in my very expensive suburban home, waaaaah pity me" types.

I admit I was poor at sports when I was younger (and, mostly, now as well)
But competition is needed for growth. It may seem harsh, but without it, as you stated, everyone will become wusses. On the basic level: Kid competes, kid loses, kid either learns from loss or learns from loss and becomes better next time. They are going to grow, and ten years later they will forget the fact that they lost a dodgeball game.

Americans, from what I have gathered in personal experience, take the little things WAY too seriously. Kids need confrontation to learn how to deal with it... If they never experience humiliation, embareassment, or fighting they will never figure out how to cope.
New PE sounds just silly. PE I thought always needed more hardcore games like eating glass...

Dodge Ball for us involved various balls (haha).

We used crumbling Nerf volley balls, and a few basket balls, however, there was one basket ball that was akin to a bowling ball. It weighed a bloody ton, and if you could hit someone with it, you'd wind up crippling them, or killin' them.

Did hurt? Not really. Was it fun? Hell yes! Was I any good? Hell no!

Yet I still had fun.

Society will realize that I cannot and should not Baby proof the world. It takes a few knocks to keep people sharp. That, and scars are awesome.

The first step in learning to succeed is learning to fail properly. The kids who go through this will grow up believing that if they fail at anything the first time they try it, it is not worth it, our civilization will crumble.

So...what about "football" (you know, that game where you carry and throw the ball)? People get hit and one team loses. Is that OK because the crippling, life destroying agony of not winning at something is spread over the whole team and therefore lessened?

As everyone else said, you have to learn that you can lose.

Im guessing that these people have never heard the history of the world. In, short it goes like this: People became and started killing. They turned out fine. People evolved, formed tribes and later civilaztions and started killing off their neightbours. They ended up fine. Dark Ages: People were being held in the darkness and then rebelled so they may seek the truth on their own, and then they were being opperessed by their governments and they rebelled. They turned out fine(this goes on till modern day). Modern day: People bitcker about and try top baby proof everything because their whinny kids weep when they stub their toe on the bed. They WILL NOT turn out fine.

I'm gonaa go out on a limb and say that they are trying to do this to prevent future crimes. Taking a child's childhood away from them in order to prevent the decay of society isn't a good idea. Besides, ever since violent video games appeared, the crime rate has been continually dropping (and I have charts and graphs to prove it!).

In conclusion, my point is: Fuck. That. Shit. (wooo XKCD)

I'm bad at sports but I love playing them at school, especially dodgeball, I fucking love dodgeball, I don't know why these parents want it banned because precious little timmy can't take a hit to the face, kids need to learn to deal with losing. Last year while playing dodgeball I copped one to the face and was forced backwards and it was fucking fun, it works both ways, you just can't beat the satisfaction of watching the ball sail through the air and just nailing someone in the face.

I was traumatised by PE and school sports to the extent I fear competitive sports because this one time I was robbed of a fencing tournament trophy because in fencing there is four judges and the guy I was against had four of his friends as the judges and I couldn't do anything to appeal the decision and therefore I quit the fencing team on principle.

Some people will do anything to win. Even if it means trampling over some kid they regard as "retarded". But look at me now, I won a competition later on in my life that actually mattered, one that was based on true merit, a blogging competition. Which netted me a PS3 for my effort. I bet those kids who cheated me in that fencing tournament had to get their parents to buy them their consoles, pfft.

In short, I have strengths in fields other than PE.
