Ninja's weren't exactly high up on the social ladder in Japan, they couldn't afford Katana's. In fact they didn't even wear black.

Ninja sword as a term seems fine if what you mean is the poorer quality straight swords they used (it looks like the one in Tenchu:Stealth Assassins) while a katana is a Samurai sword.

Once upon a time, there was a young boy who didn't know what katana or shuriken were. When talking about them to others, he would refer to those weapons as ninja swords and throwing stars because he also had no knowledge of samurai and, he knew medieval knights and vikings didn't use katana or shuriken. One day this boy became a teenager and discovered the internet. With the internet he also came upon something called anime. Within a matter of days after these discoveries, the boy shunned both old terms unless speaking with people who were completely out of touch with such things.

This is a true story about me. People learn and adapt. The kids who say 'ninja sword' today grow up to become the teens who know about wakizashi and, katana. Besides, if you don't want to inform them of their mistake then you have nobody to blame for your annoyance but yourself.

I don't ever say "Ninjato" or "Ninja Sword", I don't know what they're meant to be.

But I say throwing star. It's a spikey star that you through, therefore it's a Throwing Star....

In IRL I use ninja sword or throwing star because all the people around me have inferior knowledge from me.
I automatically deduce that they would not know what the crap I am talking about if the weapons are referred to by their real name.

Well since the ninjato is the type of sword ninjas use it is an appropriate description. Its not the proper name for it but is quite descriptive nonetheless.

What? A ninja sword is like a shortened form a Katana.

Actually it's a short, not-curved cheap katana. Unlike the curved katana used by officers and skilled warriors the ninja often threw their swords at their opponents as a retreat-strategy thus they needed their swords to be cheap to replace.

I've seen people using the words "ninja sword", or "throwing star", and it annoys the hell out of me.
Therefore, I wanted to check how other escapists feel about this. So please answer the poll, and comment with your other opinions below.

Ninja, schminja... glorified information gatherers and occational sneak murderers.

Also, there were such thing as "ninjato". It's as historically incorrect as the black pajamas.
And "shuriken" is any hidden weapon, so "throwing star" is more correct.
