Buy one and piss about with it to learn where different notes are and make a map of them, then attempt to play songs.

The Theramin is a cool instrument. you can buy kits from your local electronics store for about 10 bucks. easiest thing to do is to think like it's a piano

I'd recomend getting a smaller pocket theremin first to see if you really enjoy it. Then fork out for a nice moog.

You know, I've seen it before but I never knew what it was called.
The only reason I recognised it was because Bill Bailey used it in his Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra.

Discovered it when watching this segment [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm-rnbupIjk] from the OHM DVD I picked up on a whim. The track Clara Rockmore plays sounds like something David Firth would use.

Other then that I don't know much about it, other then it was one of the first electronic instruments made, and people that play one look cool doing so. Find a cheap used one or buy a kit, dick around with it, and maybe take lessons, if you can find anyone who teaches it, I guess.

In my Electronic Music course, the prof brought one in and showed us how it works. Neat little thing. Buy one and mess around with it... you'll get it figured out.

The main theme of The Day The Earth Stood Still (original)was played on one of those.

It's a seriously underused instrument but since it is electronic, anything made with one isn't 'real' music!

I've heard of a theremin before. I thought I was the only one who had. Apparently learning how to play one is very difficult. I also have no idea where you'd actually find one to play.

I can only imagine how hard it would be to get good at playing it. I'd imagine it'd be like playing an invisible trombone. in reverse.

It can be programmed to make a variety of sounds.

I heard about it in a little known movie called bartleby that we watched for school. They had a special feature section on the DVD about it.

I studied theremin extensively at university, played a concert recital with it, and I even had a valve theremin hand-built for me by someone who used the RCA schematic from the 1940s. I've also played newer transistor-based Theremins built by Moog (which are frankly better, the valve ones have all sorts of issues and are shockingly overrated). The valve one still sits in my loungeroom, I get it out sometimes, but not often. It's an easy instrument to make noise on, but in terms of actually making great-sounding melodies, I would say that it's second only to the violin in terms of difficulty. I've been playing for years and I'm still frankly not very good.

Learn the correct finger method, the one that Lydia Kavina uses. Get her instructional video "Mastering The Theremin", it's invaluable, and it's how I taught myself to play. Here's her in concert:

Notice how she is moving her fingers to get precise intervals (this can also be seen in your Zelda video, but that guy isn't quite up to Lydia's standard, she's the best there is). That's what you need to learn in order to get really good. Because the theremin is played without physical contact, you need a reference point for movement, and this is where finger positions come in. Just moving your arm doesn't work - you won't get precise pitching, and you'll always sound a little out of tune. Good luck, you'll need it, it's a lot harder than it looks.

The Theremin is a vile piece of junk and parlor tricks that just screams for a caption in LOLcat "ZOMG INVISIBLE INSTRUMENT".

How about we just pretend the 20th century never happened, go back to June 3, 1899, and see if we can't maybe get the culture, politics, and ideology of the dreadful 1900s right the second time.

(and you get a cookie if you tell me why I said June 3, 1899.)
