The only people I can remember using that argument against me were my parents in reference to crappy Disney musicians, which took the form of "Well, you're just jealous". So obviously it didn't hold up well.

Hatred is such a strong emotion, I doubt I've ever *hated* something regardless of it being popular. If i don't like it, i don't participate in it, and if many people like it who am I to say anything (unless they actively seek my opinion that is).

So, no, I've never disliked something BECAUSE it's popular, that's just silly, there are many reasons to dislike it on its own.

I didnt see a problem with Twilight, I just didnt like Romance films...anime is a whole other subject.

Justin Biebler, I pretend to hate him, I dont care about his music, it just annoys me, if he and I wanted to be friends I would say "Why not"

Miley Cyrus...I hate her music and nothing more...
But their is no point hating if you dont hate it.

Beyond 50% voting a clear cut "no" tells me humanity is dellusional. I'd have voted "yes" if I could have thought of a specific incident but settled for "not sure".

I like the Call of Duty series, but I don't own any past CoD 3 for the 360.
It's just that they're good games, and very entertaining and well made, but I'd rather spend my money on, say...
I don't know, something cool and new, like Infamous 2 whenever it finally comes out.

Since you're reading this on an internet forum, it's probably safe to assume you've all encountered this particular phrase or some variation thereof.

It inevitably emerges when someone who enjoys a popular and/or successful product encounters someone who does not. Common examples include Avatar, Call of Duty and Harry Potter. The accusation is generally accompanied by the suggestion that the 'hater' is motivated by the desire to be an independently minded person who does not simply follow the crowd.

...

Really? I mean... really?

Does anyone actually do this? Because I find it a bit hard to swallow.

Seriously, I'm curious. Have you - yes, you - ever decided to hate something purely because other people like it?
I hate 'Avatar' because I didn't like it. I don't 'hate' it, I just don't care for it. It felt like the movie I saw six months ago, and the oter one I saw three years ago, that i can't remember their names, but with giant blue men in space. And amazing effects.
Eye candy doesn't buy me.

If you've read some topics about people realizing that people are dicks, you probably know that the majority of people are pretty stupid. Thus, the majority of popular stuff is stupid. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a lot of popular things, but things like Pop Music and the like just piss me off because if you are someone who doesn't like it because you consider the artists to be talentless pricks who use electronics to mask the fact that they suck, such as myself, you are blamed for not liking it because it's popular.

Not entirely. Sometimes my hatred for something has been amplified by it being popular, simply because I don't get how something I despise could be so incredibly popular. But I've never gone out of my way to hate something purely because it is popular. Sometimes things are popular for a reason after all. But if something is really popular I tend to have higher expectations for it, which rarely ends well.
Basically this.

If something's popular and you already don't like it, you're more likely to call people up on it. If its something that's regarded as shit by most people (*cough* Two Worlds *cough*) you don't need to stand around pointing out the gaping flaws.

That argument tends to also be accompanied by something along the lines of: "not everything has to be intelligent/serious." Well no, it doesn't, but that's not an excuse for generally shoddy production values or poor writing.

I don't consider any games to be art (nor will I ever I doubt, just like I don't count films as art), and I'm not coming from pretentious stand point when I expect something to be good. If you put up with average, average is what you'll get.

That's why Heavy Rain got all those writing awards, in spite of having bad dialogue, plot holes, and quite a cheap twist.

As Movie Bob said in his recent article on critics, there's nothing wrong with being elitist. It does seem to stem from the larger issue that's cropping up in the form of anti-intellectualism.

No, though most that is popular I do hate. Not because it's popular, but because it's EXACTLY THE SAME as stuff I've seen before. Take most popular music for example. I could make anyone sound as good as the most popular singers with a few programs, heck, that's exactly what many of them do. And the songs they have, what are they about anyway? What messages are in the lyrics? Many don't have any meanings.

Yea, ranting... But no, I never hate on the basis of it being popular.

There are popular things I "hate", and popular things I love. I never "hate" something (initially) because it gets popular... it's usually a taste thing.

But it does annoy me when I see something I see as sub-par getting all the fame and glory that (i believe) it doesn't deserve. CoD is such a thing, but I do play it from time to time.

I think the "hipster" stereotype you're thinking of is rarer then is let on... generally its a maturity thing and you will only see it in you mid to late teens. After people tend to stop giving a fuck.

EDIT: I emphasised hate, as I think that word is used in a very juvenile way in this topic.

I did it with My Little Pony and was proven wrong.

I don't hate Call of Duty because it's popular. I hate it because, in my opinion, the perks break the multiplayer. At least in Black Ops the perks supported a play style, but in MW2 perks defined a play style. If you wanted to be the best X, you had to use perks A, B, and C. Anything else would break a class. Not to mention the whole "Perk = Killstreak Counter."

Ever face a team comprised of douches that were all using silencers, heartbeat sensors, Cold-Blooded Pro, Ninja Pro, and Scavenger Pro? Fucking ninjas with guns.

I'll be honest: I didn't drop Call of Duty until after I scored 2,500 kills with the M4A1. By that time, I was sick of the game.

I've never hated something because it was popular, I HAVE caught myself liking/disliking something more than I do because of the fans/detractors but never because of how popular it is.

I'm not entirely sure. So far as I can tell it means 'person who wears clothes that are different to mine'.

I don't hate something because it's popular, but if a product is popular, I'll probably hate the community. It's inevitable; something popular will always have a ton of idiots following it.
