I've hated things for being popular over other things, if that counts. its not that I hated things for just BEING popular, it was because they seemed to be made of shit and other things weren't more popular then them, but I usually just hate them because they are shit, so yeah, other.

i will never by their cases for my primary computer mostly because everyone that builds a custom computer usually has one (on that note, i used them religiously on secondary computer and recommend them to other people, but always keep an eye out for other brands for my current comptuer, for example, im currently using a white NZXT phantom, and am very happy with it, except for the fact that their large case fans have a proprietery size, so you have to buy NZXT 200mm fans or it wont fit)

I wouldn't exactly say "hate", but there's many times in my life when I've heard enough people in a space of time tell me I have to watch a certain movie, tv show, read a certain comic, or book, or whatever media they want me to check out that I just kind of burn out.
It's like a switch gets thrown in my head and I decide "Fuck this, I'll wait for people to stop jamming it down my throat and THEN I'll give it a try."

While i don't hate those three examples because they're popular, i have hated other things simply because they became popular.

Yup, Twilight i hated for.. well at least a year for precisely that reason, then i decided i would stop being a hypocrite cos im always saying you should form your own opinion on things, so i watched all 3 twilight movies.

After watching i can safely say i still dont like twilight.. but at least im not a hypocrite.
Aren't there four Twilight movies?
There's 4 books but only 3 movies so far, next is coming out next year (i think)
yay.
*Oh Joy she's not finished making them*, i've seen the first film and I think that's enough of it to hate Twilight without being a hypocrite...
I'll be honest, as much as i hate twilight and its fans, the first movie wasnt actually all that bad, certainly not the worst thing ever.
However the 2 other films were just plain terrible in every possible way, terrible dialogue, terrible plot, terrible acting, terrible CGI, terribly anti climactic action sequences.. infact the word terrible doesnt even begin to describe it.

So yes, i think you can hate on twilight without seeing the other two films
That's a relief, although to be honest i'm kind of curious to see how they could of made the sequels worse, ah well can't let it get the best of me, last time that happened Justin Bieber appeared everywhere.

Only songs. Name one recent song that evrybody has heard of that isn't about love.

Exactly
Just because I like a challenge:
Friday by Rebecca Black.
After that...not so sure.
Ok, you win that one.

A recent popular song that isn't about love?
I've got you now.
...uh...

I admit going to the top 40...but

Though the Spock version is much better

LMFAO, Swedish House Mafia, Lady Gaga (for once), Tracy Chapman (Fast Car)

But if you get rid of "I am great" and "Dancing is cool" songs as well, then you're left with very little.
Ok fine, you win. But I'm still right in saying the the majority is about love.

I don't hate popular things just because they're popular.

If something is popular, I usually check it out and judge it for myself.

Some things I now love (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Portal), some I hate (Twilight, Justin Bieber), and others I'm indifferent to (Avatar).

I don't hate twilight because it's popular per say. Rather I hate twilight because it's popular even though it's terrible (and I read the book, terrible waste of paper).
If it hadn't been so popular i don't think i would despise it as I do, but it is, and I do.

And I do agree. Films as well.
Not necassarily, most include love but there are very few very popular films that are primarly romances.
No, Twilight does not count.

I have, but only like guns on Call of Duty. Basically because they are annoying, people use them, and I hate them for it. I guess. Not proud of it though. I'm just honest.

No, Twilight does not count.
If Twilight had The Count, it would be a better film.

Not so much romance then as have a "love-interest".

Not purely because it's popular. There's a correlation, occasionally, between things I hate and things that are popular, but not a conclusively causal link.

I have hated MLP for a while. Not because of it's inexplicably popularity, but because of how obnoxious the hardcore fans are.

As many others have said, I dislike something because it's bad. I HATE it because of it's popularity. A large number of people liking a piece of crap, just amplifies the hate.

Since you're reading this on an internet forum, it's probably safe to assume you've all encountered this particular phrase or some variation thereof.

It inevitably emerges when someone who enjoys a popular and/or successful product encounters someone who does not. Common examples include Avatar, Call of Duty and Harry Potter. The accusation is generally accompanied by the suggestion that the 'hater' is motivated by the desire to be an independently minded person who does not simply follow the crowd.

...

Really? I mean... really?

Does anyone actually do this? Because I find it a bit hard to swallow.

Seriously, I'm curious. Have you - yes, you - ever decided to hate something purely because other people like it?
I dislike some popular things because they had to make major concessions to be popular, pandering to the most broad of stories, mechanics, and other factors because anything more specific would have brought them from 100 million in profits to a mere 10-50 million.

That, I imagine, is the problem anyone who hates popularity is actually experiencing.

In order for things to be widely popular they must make concessions, the more concessions made the more popular the product.

Inevitably, as is example in just about any medium, most artists jumps on the bandwagon and you are left with at least a year of the same generalized product with a different name and publisher.

I like a lot of different things, my ipod can attest to that, but the only time that I hate on something popular is if my friend is praising a game I can never play cuz it's not a playable genre to me, and it's mostly just joking.

I.E. Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, L.A. Noire, Dead Space 2, and others.

I mostly don't like things because I don't like that certain genre.

Unless it's a song on the radio that plays every half hour, or something that's been advertised to death, commercials every ten minutes, ads taking over everything you're doing, etc.

I haven't ever felt that way, but that mindset certainly does exist. Few people actually state it that way of course, but it becomes pretty clear once they start listing their "reasons" (assuming they can list any at all).
