Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines let you swap between the two.

First person mode so you could actually aim at things, third person mode for peripheral vision when doing anything else.

I really liked this...you just can't just from first person, IMHO.

Cover based works better in third person, run and gun fun works better in first. Generally I prefer third person because most of those games have pretty detailed character creation and staying in first person seems somehow sacrilegeous towards what probably took a lot of time and effort to make.

I hate first person perspective. It makes pretty much every game unplayable for me. I just feel claustrophobic and it always just feels clunky and weird. I can't ever seem to get used to it no matter how hard I try. I even feel that it takes away from the Dragon Quest games that in battles you always have the opponent directly in front of you.

Of course, I greatly dislike Gears of War, probably more than most first person shooters.

But in terms of perspective, third person is much, much more to my tastes. Generally I am a top-down perspective video game type person, myself.

In terms of shooters, I by far prefer the scrolling shooter variety. I long for the days when shooter meant scrolling shooter. Now when you say shooter, everyone thinks of first person shooters, it's alienating.

if its a cover game (Uncharted, Gears of War, resident evil) I prefer third person, if its more action (CoD, BF, Borderlands) I prefer first person

so really it all depends on the style of the game, and I think everyone will answer the same more or less

I both 1st & 3rd-person shooters a lot, but I like third-person better. Cover-based, and squad-based 3rd-person shooters are ok, but I've always liked fast-paced, run & gun shooters the most like: Wet, Max Payne, Stranglehold, Red Faction Guerrilla & Armageddon, and Vanquish. Also I like my 1st & 3rd shooters to have melee kills too since those are my favorite kind of kills. I think the "over the shoulder shot" perspective is the best view.

I don't think so. Eventhough I like third-person shooters more, but Gears of War might be the only third-person shooter that I'd enjoy a lot more in first-person view.

I don't have favorite. It comes down to a game by game basis. I like to have multiple camera options like the Bethesda games honestly. I don't see why more game go the route of multiple camera options.

I hear Tribes Ascend has both FPS and 3rd person options. It's nice to see that in a multilayer shooter.

If there is melee combat and platforming involved then I prefer third person to get that spacial awareness you so desperately need, otherwise first person to really get that 100% on my accuracy.

But modern games tend to fuck up both, they either put you in third person and shove the camera right up someones ass, or stuff your face with gun in first person and put a letterbox over your head... brilliant camera work there.

I like both as so long as they're appropriate for the game and well executed. Eg. GoW and Halo etc.

What's strange was a game like James Bond Quatum of Solace was a mix of both. FPS for running about but switches to a third-person when you take cover. It was a bit rough and the game was obviously rushed to meet with the movie release but I think that the developer was close to something brilliant.

I wish I could play Gears of War in first-person view, and Halo in third-person view so then I would like those two franchises. I like Gears a little, but I can't stand Halo, but I'm a little interested in Halo 4, but we Crysis 2 is the best first-person shooter ever. Wet is my favorite third-person shooter.

Third-Person all the way. I prefer CoD in third-person, Skyrim in third-person, Assassins Creed, Gears of War, anything with customisation. I just prefer seeing how well blended my character is or how bad ass I look, instead of just seeing my forearms and weapon.

Pretty much what OP said, the ability to see more than my character should annoys me in multi player, so I prefer 3rd person single player, and first person multiplayer. Though it really depends on the game, I have played some great 3rd person MP games, and I don't think it needs to be said that there are some superb 1st person single player games out there.

First person for the vast majority of games, with the odd exception for third person when done right. Gears of War is a decent example of a quality third person shooter.

I tend to go towards First person but I do enjoy occasional TPS. I especially like one that lack real cover mechanics and go for more unique mehanics like Lost Planet and those grappling guns or Just being a more old school shooter like warkhawk.
