Are stairs a vehicle? How about an elevator? I'd personally say it's a piece of equipment.

You can't make it fly from the ground. You can't make it go from one place to another on the ground.

Basically its not a vehicle.

Stairs, no. But an elevator most definitely is a vehicle. It truly fits all dictionary definitions of a vehicle (when it comes to the nature we are speaking of).

Why don't you consider it a vehicle?

I do actually, I'm just asking for clarification on what is considered a "vehicle". Some people would say "No, elevators are not vehicles, only cars, planes, and such are".

Why do people think that the only way to use a parachute is to get up high with a plane? Have you people never heard of Base-jumping?
Because of the discussion. No-one ever base-jumped to work, but people use a plane to get from one place to another.

This is why I do not consider a parachute to be a vehicle; on it's own it is not used as transport, but as a way of dismounting from establishe vehicles safely, to get to a place that the vehicle took you over.
Just because it's generally impractical doesn't mean it's not possible. I mean, it would be much cheaper and quicker to just put a few parachutes at the top of a high-rise building than have a lift.

Im gonna say no. The plane that gets you in the air, yes. You can jump out of said plane without the paracute. It would only happen the once but the paracute doesn't affect your journey, only slows it down. If anything it's the opposite a mode of transport (as it inhibits transport) so instead I would like to define it as.....a pair of shoes. They dont get you there faster but they sure as hell save you from pain when your going there.

A parachute slows down your fall, doesn't do anything else. So no.

There are some questions which should remain unanswered because because of their mystique, others should remain unanswered just because of the potential for lulz.

This thread falls in the latter category.
Oh yes, parachutes have fantastic potential for lulz:
That scream keeps cracking me up.

Just you try and find a spot high enough to run that vehicle from w/o it actually being an exploding plane.

When and if you do, I'll be there with a rocket pack and a switchblade to really mess up your day.

3, OT: Who cares?
1. This is Off-topic section.
2. Read his post; he gave an answer.
3. The people posting in this thread.

I'm going to say that a parachute isnt a mode of transport. (is it a safety device maybe)

It is not a vehicle in the same way that roller-blades and skateboards aren't vehicles.

n.
a. A device or structure for transporting persons or things; a conveyance: a space vehicle.
b. A self-propelled conveyance that runs on tires; a motor vehicle.

By definition, it is... but along those lines your legs can be considered a vehicle. It's obviously something that is a broad spectrum of items. For convenience though, Most people will only consider common transport vehicles as actual "vehicles." Parachute, although fun, is not really a viable method of casual transport.

The RAF have flying-suqirrel parachute suits, which are used to transport soldiers behind enemy lines undetected.

In that form the parachute is a form of vehicle because its used as transportation.

(edit: should mention that I answered 'no' to the question, but changed my mind when I rememberd the above fact. Sorry about that)
