The short answer to your question is "that's what sells". Game making is a business, and with how much goes into making a game, must be in order to work. And in order for a game developer to stay in business making games, they must make games that will sell. Game makers will make more original games when original games sell well. They will stop making the same old game when people stop buying that same old game.

Also, I think you are viewing the past through rose tinted glasses. For every River City Ransom, there was a Zero Wing. For every Gunstar Heroes, there was a Sonic 3D. For every Shadow of the Colossus, there was a Trigger Man. Bad games are covered by the sands of time, leaving only the quality ones visible on the landscape. Thus the past looks better than it was.

Not really. This generation has some very worthwhile titles, however the wii has continued to put out a large portion of lackluster games. I would say that games today are certainly easier than older games, with a few exceptions. Dragon Age actually captures that frustrating challenge level of old school games, where you find yourself pulling out your hair and screaming obscenities at the screen with regular frequency.

Some of you speak of 'the day' as if the great age of video games was back then. Back in 'the day' we made fun of nintendo for not going to a cd based system. That was a pretty sweet era for video games, but back then we wished we were back in 'the day'. Oh yeah, THOSE days when the super nintendo solid gold sequels to our favorite games from back in the day. What day was that? Might it have been the era of the 8 bit nintendo entertainment system and it's rise to dominance and empire?

Oh, and when we were playing nintendo enjoying our castlevanias and super mario bros, there were the older folks who were insisting back in the day, nothing was better than pac-man.

As someone who has seen the ebb and flow of video games throughout my life, I can say that we will continue to see both good and bad games in the future. The only real certainty is that dungeons and dragons was better back in the day, and every version after 2nd has decreased in quality by a factor of e.

Personally I think too many companies are vainly attempting to keep most of their franchises on life support, so they end up spending more time and effort working under very strict conditions in adding countless additions to old franchises rather than making fresh, new games for players to enjoy. And you want to know why, BECAUSE OF THE FAN BASES!

There are some good games of this generation, you just have to go through the dirt 'til you dig up the diamonds.

There's a lot of crap out there, not to mention the bundle of games that try to be gear of war/halo clone. Personally I want a game that actually does something different and fun, cause it's pretty hard to see these days.

What do you mean? Is that somehow not a legitimate point?

The truth hurts!
Not really but if thats all you have to say
That's all that really needs to be said. Point is gaming really hasn't gotten worse. If anything it's only gotten better, since the shovel ware of today's market, terrible though it may be, is still far more preferable to that featured in past generations.

But there has always been shite. And there will always be shite. It's just we don't remember the shite from the "Good Ol'" Days" because then they won't be the "Good Ol' Days". We have the Angry Nerd to show us all the shite that came before.

And I'm rather miffed that you still haven't answered Kraken's question from a whole page ago. In case you forgot:
If the sequel is good, why does it matter if it comes out a year after the original game?

I really gotta say i agree.. I grew up in the SNES years.. but i didnt play the SNES see my parents didnt like video games but i did start playing the Dreamcast and the N64 over at my cousins house and less than a year later i got a PS1. So Yes i am disappointed.. There are 0 games in my opinion that truly stand out in this generation.. The only thing it has going for it is improved technology.. But they dont use it to its full potential instead they produce piles of crap one after another.. Eventually gamers will unite and stop buying this garbage... Then they will be forced to make games worth buying.. Until then i am not going to give there greedy asses a cent! PIRACY UNTIL THE DAY MY MONEY IS WORTH SPENDING!!! I bought every single one of my PS1 and N64 games.. because i knew they were worth my money.. I just dont have that faith that i used to.. Its sad but when i go to some kind of game store i expect to be disappointed.. The only people that think these games are good are the current generation.. I say this to you current generation pick up a SNES some time try some of the more famous games on it.. Shouldn't take you more than 20 seconds to come to the same conclusions i have.. But im not one sided i do see a lot of potential in this market still i just dont see the talent.. And i have played most modern games.. I actually spent all day yesterday on COD: WAW... so yeah.. the multiplayer games are where its at for this generation.. You just cant expect worth a damn a good puzzle/Adventure/RPG/Whatever else i forgot genres.. Multilayer shooters is where its at.. Oh and the story's are either non exist ant have humongous plot holes or are insanely short..

the thing is you are horrably horrably wrong. Shit very new game I play is a dissapiontment in a big way. Its getting so frequent in fact that the last time I remember this problem occouring so much was when the playstaion hit the market.

I think you might just be treating your opinion as fact. Why exactly are all these new game shit? You haven't really given an explanation for this. Something tells me you just despise the FPS genre, which dominates a large portion of the market right now.

Like the movie, literature, and music industries, they've forgotten how to not mass-produce the same shit over and over again. Yeah, that sums it up.
That's a great summary. The games industry is going the way movies recently have. They've all made the economically conservative call of mass-producing the same safe, bland garbage the majority of consumers will approve in order to create a steady cash flow. Few companies are taking chances with creative and innovative games we haven't seen before in exchange for a secure profit. Is this wrong? No, but it's certainly a sad thing to watch.
Maybe some people are forgetting the state of the economy, game publishes just don't have the money to back a game that *may* sell so they make safe games that they know people will buy, hence the amount of sequels released.
