The Escapist is the only non-social media site (For nitpickers who consider this a social media site of sorts, I'm thinking more along the line of Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Youtube when I say social media) I have an account on. It's also the only site I created an account for to discuss in forum topics. I read forums of other tech, gaming, and news sites like Slashdot, but I don't discuss in them.

I got here when a friend introduced me to Zero Punctuation and then stayed for Jimquisiton, Critical Miss, Miracle of Sound, and well, lots of great things on this site. After a while, I was like, "Hmm, maybe I should create an account if I'm going to visit so frequently?" Before I decided to create an account I decided to see what the forums were like. Fell in love with those too. There's just something about the forums here that's special to me. Plus, I'm too lazy to keep track of that many accounts just for forum discussing. I mean, if I took my passion for discussion to all the sites with fun forums I'd never get off the Internet and my college career would be over, haha. Besides, I have a hard enough time keeping track of all my social media, school, and email accounts to juggle even more.

Who else is like me in this regard? Why is this your only non-social media site you have an account for, particularly for forum discussing? Are your reasons similar to mine?

Yeah, I only really use The Escapist forums.

I probably spent most of my Internet browsing time here. I have my problems with the community but I've been here for so long, it just feels like home. There're a lot of shitheads here but there are also a lot of fantastic users and that's the only reason I haven't left yet. I barely even pay attention to the content of the site anymore, I primarily use the forums and user groups.

I came for the content, stayed for the forums and now I think I have stockholm syndrome. XD

I know this is a saying as old as the Internet to excuse really bad trends and I know it's a bit fallacious, but I think it's got merit despite that: Every community has problems. I think, if the community has gotten worse overall, it's because a lot of new users are recently coming over from a certain controversial topic who want to voice their opinion vehemently on said controversy and I think that's what has caused a lot of the vitriol lately. I've opened up a can of worms by saying that, haven't I? Please, nobody discuss that here. Keep it to the currently 787 page mega thread dedicated to that.

Don't say that! You make it sound like it's bad you're here! I've seen you around and I enjoy reading your posts. 10/10 users say you should stay...[small]OK, you caught me. I created a biased poll[/small]

Mostly, yeah. Not that I'm nowhere else, but that's mostly turned into a social thing.

Used to be on the BL forums until they kicked me off for saying they shouldn't get Goto to write for them, after his view of eldar was LotR elves in space. And I still say I'm right, though Ward was worse.

Yup, this is the only one I visit and the only place where I've bothered to make an account.

I've lurked here for a long ass time before making my account, and I'm glad I did. Granted, there have been times where I've had massive disagreements with people here on various subjects, but they never really lasted long honestly. I've met some awesome people here, and some I would call them friends. My peeps. My bros, if you will.

As for the forums? Well, I'm kind of hit-or-miss with a good chunk of them. I've been super busy so I haven't had a whole lot of time to past like I normally would, but unless there's a good discussion going on or topic I just read and move on. User groups is where I am now.

Maybe at some point I'll dive into forum games or something.

Who knows.

Eventhough I've grown quite tired of the old girl, this is still the only site/forum I bless with the occasional discussion.

I usually take it for granted that it should seem obvious based on my post count and join date but I guess it bears repeating.

The Escapist is my only forum website. Its the only place I feel like I can belong to part of the online community in some way while also still enjoying the content the contributers provide. I'm on here lurking more than posting these days (damn school, taking all my time) but compared to any other online site, this is the only one I have any 'presence' on.

Heck, even Facebook for my real life friends sees less of me in comparison. I guess I just <3 you guys for some reason.

Same here, this is my main site for most of my internet browsing.

I come here to look at the forums mostly as well as watch Jimquistion and sometimes ZP. These are the only forums that I use right now, it's also where I get most of my news since someone will usually make a topic to discuss any major happenings.

I've used other forums before but The Escapist ones are easily my favourite. They have a really nice layout with lots of neat features, a good community that's large enough to be fairly varied and they are pretty well moderated. Things like low content posts don't seem that bad but the forums are much nicer without them.

After watching Jim Sterling in a podcast with TB, I was like " well this is a right entertaining bastard, where can I find more of him"
and voila, The escapist. That turned out well as I found out about the caustic ZP and Top 5 with Ms. Foiles.

Now it's become my home page when I get in at work, it's basically my gaming newsfeed now. It has only been lately that I've been forum posting, but it's been fun as long as you can navigate the varying...topics...that tend to bury the other topics. This is like my mistress to my other forum, which is dedicated to a book series so it's a different layout and content and I like the disparity. It works well though since I can only really post at work ( having read that, that speaks volumes of how hard I work.....) .

I've been in other forums and such, but have not stayed because of the toxicity and disrespectfulness of the community. Hopefully that wont happen here, or I'll have to hide in a group.

Edit - oops, forgot to vote

For the moment the Escapist is the only site in which I comment in the forums. I like this site but I'd like some more popular topics that are more happy go lucky because all the socially correct, politically correct, gamergaty, harrasment topics etc... is kinda pushing me away from the forums and now just really annoy me :/. It kinda saddens me that all the negative topics get more attention than the positive ones :'(

I want more happy, video game related forum topics on a site that is called "The Escapist"

:D

Huh. Never given it much thought before, but now that you mention it...

Yeah, I think this is the only social site I post on/go to anymore. My Facebook account has been hacked by Chinese people so often, it isn't even worth the hassle of trying to maintain it every time they lock me out of my own account.

I used to be a frequent poster on the UK 'silenthillsforums' back when it was still up and running, and I still have a lot of fond memories of the community there. This is the closest thing I've found to SHF as far as user activity. Is it perfect? No. But at least the forum boards aren't dead like they are in a lot of other sites I've been on.

I'm not sure how that is an indication of anything. I've got a level 37 account in GameFAQs, for reference level 38 is the most of what "normal" users can get at the moment (and at the current rate, I'll reach that...on Apr. 3 2019, Wednesday, according to some online date calculator) but it's quite obvious that's not the only place I visit. I mean, given that I am here.

OT: As above, not my only forum. I've been around the web and part of several. Some I left, some just fell apart for different reasons others I'm still part of. For example, the aforementioned GameFAQs boards, which actually were my first online forum I started with.

There's only really two sites I'm active on, and two others for very limited discourse. The Escapist for video game discussion, and the Metal Archives for heavy metal discussion. Other than that, I also use Facebook in an extremely limited fashion to keep in contact with a couple of close friends, as well as Last.Fm due to a small group of online friends I've built there. Besides the odd YouTube comment, that's really all I use for socialising.

Hmm... okay, okay. I lie. I may or may not also be on a pornography forum as well, with some level of activity. But I shall say no more of this.

As for Twitter and reddit and 4chan and such things... never gone near 'em and I never plan to.

Nope.

I mean, I have the Escapist for the vidya gaems...

For 40k, I go to Bolter and Chainsword and the Dark City often (as my two armies are Space Marines and Dark Eldar)

I also tend to go to Shanghai Expat, just to find some other people who get why China can be wearying for foreigners.

And of course, I tend to browse /pol/, /b/, /adv/, /fit/ and /tg/, but only post in /adv/. The rest are just unapologetically honest/funny/black humoured.

Yes for the most part.

I have forum accounts in the past for games and a guild but I only used Guild Wars 2 forum every now and then. Granted this site is the only account when it come to dicussing other stuff than gaming. The two past game site I was with did had an off topic section but those people over there were boring (couldn't get people going on fun dicussion).

Yes. The site layout is brilliant, the rule against low-content is great, site contributors are great, it's all just fuckin' brilliant.
And as a more recent plus, this is one of the few places that didn't get censored when "it" happened.

The forum-goers *tend* to be insightful rather than inciteful, most of the time. Granted, with the recent happenings, most of the discussion has become about GG this, GG that, this creation is something-ist etc, etc.

I'd like it if everything went back to how it used to be. That's what I joined for anyway.

Yup, I don't frequent other sites where I talk to other people as much as this one. (Actually it's more or less the only one.)

I came here for the great video content, stayed for the community.

I'm only really here because I can't be bothered with joining somewheres else.

Ultimately I don't think I like forums all that much, game forums anyway. I just don't care for most people's attitude and I doubt they care for mine. Too many embittered cod-cynics with some kind of chip on their shoulder with very little else to think about.

As for the content...well, I like Critical Miss more and more; I grow tired of Yahtzee every passing day, Jim is Jim, but I only really watch it when it's something I haven't already hear about, and Moviebob...well I'm not at all interested in Marvel/DC comics. That's it really.
