Yeah, Australia isn't really that bad. The only dangerous spider I see on a regular basis are redbacks, but they usually just lurk under bricks and in sheds so it's not too bad if you're careful. I've only once found a redback in the house, and it was a dead one I found under my bed. Luckily it never decided to go exploring and stayed there.

Usually it's just huntsmen and white tails, and I've yet to be bitten by either. White tails are probably the worst because unlike redbacks which tend to stay in their webs, white tails wander round the house and pop up in surprising places. One of my friends seemed to have a spider infestation when I was at his place a while ago... killed several big spiders, some in my bed before I went to sleep, and then woke up in the night with a tickling on my elbow... a tiny spider was crawling on it and had woken me up. Made me jump like nothing else.

The closest I've come to a really dangerous animal was when I was swimming in a shallow rock-pool as a kid, and noticed a mother-frickin blue-ringed octopus sharing the pool with me. One of the most dangerous sea creatures, with enough venom to kill 26 adult humans in minutes. Luckily he minded his own business till I spotted him and left the water.

Another time, we found a red-bellied black snake at my grandparents place. It just stayed where it was till we got someone out ot remove it.

Pppph. Bloody wusses.

Also, some of this thread borders on blatant racism, but that pic is just an exception. Honestly, that spider is more confused than anything else.

Be scared of this.

As big as a fucking dinner plate.

Anyway, Africa (the whole continent) is a trillion times more dangerous than Australia.

Australia where the sharks are the only thing keeping the spiders in.

But the more common one you'll see is a hunstman, they're big but non poisonous, I actually like having one in the house (well maybe not the bedroom) as they eat cockroaches.

but when I was reading in bed and I saw one 30cm from my face, I did do the whole "OSHIT GET OUT OF BED WTF WTF" thing. But yeah, that was like 3 years ago.
That alone is reason enough for me to never go there. Up here in the sunny beaches of Canada, the bodies of spiders rarely get bigger than the size of a pinky-nail unless you venture deep into our forests.

... news story over a year old.

Huntsman spiders rock too, they eat soooo much other stuff. Funny how in a world where people can go toe toe with aliens in gears of war, and yet, in real life.... they'd crap themselves at the sight of a spider :)

As you can see in the picture, the spider is clearly the size of a small car.
Assuming you count Hot Wheels, of course. Unless it somehow captured a roc in its web...

It was a big mistake coming on to this thread. I have a phobia of spiders even penny spiders, they creep me more out because they're so small. Anywho the fact that australia has big spiders and even if they're rare prevents me from ever going there. Which is a shame as i actually would like to go but the scary spiders keep me away. Thats probably a good thing for australia though haha

Dude, it's about the size of your hand on average. It grow's nowhere near the size of a car.

I've lived all but three years of my life here in Australia, and I can only count two situations where I have been close to insects that can kill me. Both where red-back spiders (they're extremely small but their poison is renown for being extremely fatal) and both I wasn't in any real danger.

How is this something that's wrong with Australia?
Its called sarcasm, something everyone else on the internet picked up on way before you did.

Its eating a fucking pigeon by the way

Yah, Australia has a collection of animals you'd never want to meet. Most poisonous jellyfish, most poisonous fish, most poisonous shellfish, most poisonous Octopus, most poisonous snake, most poisonous spider, only poisonous mammal not to mention giant fucking crocodiles, numerous sharks, endless desert, a reef that was actually named "Barrier", (you'd think they'd get the hint,) raging bushfires, massive insects, deadliest bird, Russell Crowe and Michael Atkinson.

And despite all that it's still a pretty cool place.

I didnt want people to take it seriously as if it was an actual problem with Australia. It was a jab at all of those THIS IS WRONG WITH AMERICA bullshit polls. I know Africa has meaner stuff its just that for being a bug, that's fucking scary

We punch kangaroos for sport. Orb Weavers are nothing. Any bird that gets caught by one deserves to be spiderfood.

The other day, my cat brought a live brown snake into my house. Incredibly venomous, incredibly dangerous, but that didn't stop me throwing the thing out again with my bare hands. That's the kind of shit we do down here.
You need to get a hold of shine-osophical and teach him how to do it, there was a brown snake at his place the other day and he pissed off to his aunty's house. Yes Damon, I'm publicly shaming you.

Guys, remember those nightmares you had as a kid and your mum told you they weren't real? Well she lied, what you saw was a portal to the Australian outback.

Any questions?

We can survive here because we are just awesome.
Also the fact you rarely see spiders (I live in a small country town and have only seen two spiders in the last year).
