if its character consistent, I'm all for it, in fact, I preffer having the choice wether I forgive my adversaries or cut em open.
surrender and execution could be very awesome parts to a combat system, I remember Mount and Blade giving you the ability to knock your opponents with blunt weapons instead of killing them with a sword or bow.

Yeah I'd be quite happy to take the non-lethal approach. In fact, I'm going to work that into the design document of the iPad game I'm very slowly getting around to making.

-Platformers
-Puzzle
-Point+Click Adventure
-Certain RPG's

These games have little to no killing in them.

In the case of platformers, you're killing little monsters or make-believe stuff (like flying Cauliflower in Banjo Kazooie and Goombas in Mario).

Puzzle games normally have no killing in them.

Point and Click Adventures are pretty violence free. Monkey Island is a great example. There are some violent Point and Click games (try The DIG if you haven't played it before)

Certain RPG's give you non-lethal options to solve issues (KoTOR and ME1 had a bunch of these "peaceful options" in certain situations) and Deus Ex: HR is another example of an RPG with a non-lethal option.

However, Violence is a key pillar of society. Entertainment (which is what video games are) has always involved violence since the beginning (Gladiators in the Colosseum anyone?) and it's pretty hard to find something that is not violent.
