Razor I agree with you 100%. I learned on a Jeep TJ with a 5 speed and a straight 6. NOT a forgiving vehicle to learn stick. When people start out driving a manual it's often intimidating, especially if they have no knowledge of how the system works.
I find working in the automotive trade (parts, service, tech; all apply) and gaining the knowledge of exactly how your clutch works; be it hydraulic pedal, electric shift, wet disc/dry disc etc, really helps to ease people into a manual. My girlfriend for instance has just started driving on her own and I cannot convince her to take the wheel in my Mazda, she's too afraid she will stall out or cause damage.
IMHO both systems have strengths and weaknesses. Anyone who has ever had to replace the clutch on a 2001-2004 Pontiac Sunfire or Chevy Cavalier knows what I mean, those Gertrag transmissions use expensive parts. And a Pontiac Grand Am, 2nd & 3rd gen Mazda Protege or 93-01 Nissan Sentra chew through automatic transmissions like they're going out of style.
I have driven 3 speed Borg Warners, 4 speed Muncie M40s, 5 speed Mazda G & F series and Chrysler\AMC's NV3550 5 speed and let me tell you, the difference a couple synchros can make when making the shift from 2nd to 3rd or even 1st-2nd is amazing. Muncie and Borg-Warner T's (high gears, T-10s often had synchros in between 1st and 2nd) yeah, you can cause a lot of damage if you don't know when to shift, but modern manuals make life so much easier. They aren't indestructible of course but most do not feel like you're shifting a cement mixer or crushing rocks and they won't take your hand off when you shift into the wrong gear.
Anyway that's it, I'm done for now. I use a manual for the daily driver, and my Apollo is still rocking her TH350 auto. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Although I'm legally allowed to drive either, I have yet to drive an Automatic. Some say Autos are far easier to drive, but I love the feeling of fast acceleration. When you have lights just before a dual carriageway and you leave the Merc who is obviously far more powerful than you in the dust, you can't help but feel happy. Also you seem to have far more control, I'd have to drive an Auto before I could give a proper comment though.

My car is manual, because every cheap car in the UK is. I'd like to drive an automatic though, because changing gears seems like kind of a hassle, when there is an alternartive.

So, I see a lot of people say that a manual is "more fun" to drive.
If driving is *zero* fun, or, more accurately, negative fun, will manual change that?
To rephrase, can I have *more* fun if I haven't had any fun yet?

Manual, since auto is ez-mode driving. Nothing wrong with wanting to drive an automatic car, but everyone should learn to use a manual. The more you know...

I've never driven a manual transmission, but I really want to learn how to drive one.

I recently started driving lessons. Was originally planning on going for an automatic licence but changed my mind and decided to give manual a go... what do you know, it's not all that difficult once you get used to it.

Auto, I can eat a chocolate sunday while driving :)
It doesn't take long and you can do that in a manual too. I learnt in and spent my first year only driving automatics. Then I specifically went out and bought a manual car and forced myself to learn. It's one of the best things I ever did, really glad I took the time. Despite what you may prefer to drive I think all people should at least know how and have the ability to drive manual - you never know when you may need it in an emergency.

I prefer automatic. Unless you are drag racing, there really is no advantage in a car used just for transport to go manual. I also do a lot of city driving, and constant shifting in stop and go traffic is a PITA. Really I can't see any reason why anyone would drive anything other than an automatic for a basic car for transportation.

Now if you are planning on racing cars, or driving a truck with heavy loads, of course standard is king.
A manual car will use less petrol to the kilometre than it's automatic counterpart. Although the line is blurred with the stop-start of city driving. Also when buying a new car a manual can often be $4-5000 cheaper.

I admit the benefits of a manual transmission is attractive, but simply for the sake of resale I do not see myself purchasing anything but automatic in the near future.

I was taught to drive automatic, but I would also want to learn stick. Now if I could just find a car with manual transmission so that I can practice...

I learnt how to drive in a manual car and I had a manual for a year. I've switched to an automatic now and I've found that it suits me much better. Having an automatic makes spending time in traffic a lot less painful.

UK and Manual.

I'll take any car that's available and that I want. Transmission doesn't affect me in the slightest.
