I do not believe there is a god, but I could still go to church with my muslim friend and be open on the idea but never believe.

and I've de-converted about 17 of my religous friends. How? They asked me how I could not believe in god. =)

I haven't been able to crack a friend of the family from which is a buddhist... amazing how flexible that religion/way of life is @_@

I'm not sure if there is a word to describe what my religious affiliation is.

There are certain questions that have occurred to me that render me completely incapable of dismissing theist beliefs altogether. There's a certain big one which I've never been able to figure out how to phrase in such a way that others would be on the same page (it has to do with how sentient life and perception works). My point is; there is SOME 'supernatural' force.

I have no idea what shape that force has though, nor do I claim to know what its opinions are. Those who think they do are retards.

By now I have learned that many Escapists are atheists. This is coming from a Christian, but what 'kind' of atheist are you? Do you have friends with beliefs, or do you stand on a soap box and yell 'Religion is dumb'? Sorry if I didn't get the 'soap box' term right, I heard my dad say it once and I think I heard him wrong. I just want to know what type of people I may deal with in religious threads in the future.

Just btw I'm not really uptight. My best girl friend is an atheist. I was raised Catholic, I still am, but I don't agree with some ideas, probably more to come. I also sometimes (try to) think about the universe without a God, sometimes it doesn't fase me.
There's something I'm hoping you might be able to tell me. I have a couple of internet friends who are "Catholic" but disagree with some ideas. In their case, they don't agree with the "homosexuality is wrong" thing.
My question is essentially this: why label yourself a Catholic, when there are things you disagree with in the Catholic belief system. It doesn't make sense to me, I don't consider myself a member of PETA, because even though I think animals deserve better treatment, I don't believe we should stop eating animal products entirely.

The reason I'm asking you instead of them by the way is that in the past they have recieved the false impression that I am anti-theist, whereas at worst I'm anti-"organised"theism. As such any attempt to ask this of them could be taken the wrong way.
I understand what you mean, and yet I have no great answer. I'm 15, I'm taking confirmation classes, it makes my mom happy and I'm glad I take them. I know I don't agree with some Catholic ideas, but 1-I think I can customize my belief no matter what I am, and 2-I haven't found a Protestant belief that fits how I feel more than Catholicism. Not saying Catholicism is totally how I feel, I just can't find a better Protestant one.
Thank you for your reply, it confirms both my own thoughts on the matter as well as other posts from earlier. It was very enlightening. ^_^

I'm a angry Athiest. Religion pisses me off to no end

"I choose cold rationalism as opposed to superstition or supernatural belief. You see the world as the result of natural processes and evolution. Sure, science doesn't have... all the answers, but that's why they call it a method, not a dogma. Morality is the product of evolution and natural biological processes."

I'm an atheist. I'm technically an agnostic, since I can't prove that there isn't a god, but that also makes me agnostic as regards leprechauns, chupacabra, sasquatch and bearable daytime television - it could be out there, but I haven't fucking seen it and neither has anyone else. I'm 99.9% certain that there isn't a god, but there's no 100% certainty in science.

I'm generally cool with religious people believing in their invisible sky fairies, as long as they don't go denying plainly obvious facts such as evolution, but evolution does tend to throw a spanner in the works as regards the Abrahamic scriptures. It's quite reasonable, of course, to suggest that a god created the universe, but only before you apply Occam's Razor - I can't prove that God doesn't exist, but I can prove that he is unnecessary.

look dood i don't want an arguement i didnt even want a responsei was just saying a statment/opinion/whatever but for the sake of arguement the stuff you just quoted comes from the old testament which were gods rules for the jewish folks plus you fail to mention jesus and i can promise you the fact that jesus died on the cross and came back to life completley rearanged the rules because it allwoed for one important thing FORGIVING. as long as you can forgive somone there is no problem at all. and i have kinda forgotten what this arguement is about so don't bother responding anyway and i doubt we will ever come into contact again as im switching to a new profile pretty shortly have a good lifeand dont get me wrong im not backing out i just couldn't be nothered to argue with you
