1.) If the game I am playing is heavily narrative or story, inspired, I tend to play on easy; just to get all of the story so I don't miss anything. Yes, I am one of those people. If I really enjoy the story, I buy the books too. So I can get more in-depth into the world and understand some of it's history. I read every sentence. If the game is on it's highest difficulty setting from the beginning, I get frustrated and will skip over narrative, even though I enjoy it.
2.) If it's your basic hack and slash with minimal story, I tend to go through normal first. Just to see the game-play and to see what the bosses are like, and what I'll be facing. If the story is small, I'll still be able to catch it all. I'll then play it again on the harder settings, for personal achievements, smug-looks, and self pats on the back.
3.) If the game gives you no choice in difficulty, then, I'd prefer too hard. If they are too easy and I go right through them - then what did I pay the money for? Nothing apparently. If it's going to be easy and short, with no difficulty setting choice - they better have one hell of a story. One that I will laugh, weep, and cheer at through the whole thing, and especially at the ending that will win awards and bring together nations.
