Voltaire didn't mean that literally, it was more an argument that a paternalistic society needs the concept of "God the Father." Deus Ex meant it literally. I agree with Voltaire-some people need something to believe in. And as far as the world being freed from disease, crime, suffering, and death - it already has had freedom proclaimed to it. That liberation is something that has already begun, but is not yet finished.
