Yay! More backwards Aussie politics.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott has come out (trying to win votes among the female population) and told women that they should wait till marriage to have sex. The debate isn't old but what I think has made all the waves about the topic is that Abbott, who is a out-spoken Christian (aren't they all?), is said to have fathered a child to a former girlfriend, which makes him a bit of a hypocrite.

Tony Abbott said:
"I would say to my daughters, if they were to ask me this question, I would say ... it is the greatest gift that you can give someone, the ultimate gift of giving and don't give it to someone lightly that is what I would say."
Deputy Prime Minister Julian Gillard has summed up what most women who have been asked have said. "Women don't want to be told what to do by Tony Abbott."

But, does Abbott have a point? Is virginity sacred? Especially in today's world where women are much more promiscuous then say, women my age (18-25 age bracket) 20 years ago or so?

On a side note, Abbott's views on contraception are very similar to his opinions on this. Being Christian, he's against it. Does that also affect your view on Abbott's call to women?

Right, for the people who keep saying, "It was directed at his daughters" yadda yadda yadda, I'm getting at the principle of the thing. The fact he's a giant hypocrite, and if what he's telling his daughters holds true in today. Quit bitchin' about it, and answer the question. Kthxbai.

Nope, it's not a big deal. Just let people lose it when they want. What about the women that don't want to get married? What about women that would maybe like a sex life.

In short-
You've gotta test the car before you buy it.

I'm not so sure that women are "so much more promiscuous". It may appear that way, but I would put that down to sexual relations being a less taboo topic now. It's not like everyone was a virgin 'till marriage back in the day, it just wasn't necessarily publicised so much.

Hell, the hippie wave, that was promiscuity and experimentation. Go back far in history and I'm sure you will find just as many (if not more) prostitutes, and girls having sex at tender ages. Just because it is frowned upon now, doesn't mean it happens more.

Anyhow that was my 2 cents.

See, if I'd waited till marriage and got a complete dud, I would be so pissed that I lost my virginity to him. I'd feel a touch ripped off :p

I'm not a woman, but I don't think telling people what they should do is a very good thing to do.

Besides, I thought working with the traditional Christian way of doing things lead to repressed sexuallity and other such things?

Uhh... What the hell? Have I invented a time machine and gone back a few decades? Oh wait, it's Australia.

Jokes aside, it's your choice (male, or female), when you feel comfortable losing your virginity.

Exactly, then you'd end up getting a divorce and I'm sure that would be 'frowned upon' also. Lose-Lose situation.

Awsome way to gather voters bravo, "Hey lets alienate an entire generation of younger women to pander to a bunch of old christian conservatives who are still living in the 1970s!"

This is the man with the task of getting the censornistas out of office. We can no longer win, so it's time for an armed revolution. Problem is, we're too lazy to do that.

Somehow I read the title and knew that this was from Australia. Glad to see OP didn't disappoint.

OT: Countries don't need their governments to tell the people how to use their own bodies. That's where judgement and common sense comes in.

Why should I listen to Tony Abbot?

I do not even know who he is.

I think that the whole `value` placed on a girl`s virginity is misogynistic and controlling. If Tony Abbot really believes that virginity is so important, then he should stress that men also preserve their family jewels.

Also, being against contraception in this modern day and age is ridiculous. A lot of the problems some countries have now, and other countries may face in the future, such as overcrowding, water and energy shorteges, AIDs pandemic e.t.c. can all be solved with a rubber jonny.

Safe responsible legal sex is nothing for anyone to feel ashamed about.

I would like to point out when asked what advice he would give on sex before marriage, he told the (Women's) Weekly: (I would say to MY DAUGHTERS, if they WERE TO ASK ME this question it is the greatest gift you can give someone, the ultimate gift of giving and don't give it to someone lightly).

He never said anything about women should wait till marriage to have sex not in that statement anyway.

People are taking the statement out of it context.

Well i gave up on Australian politics a long time ago. So i always plan to vote for the greens. Its not like they will ever win. Nearly all Australian politicians are a bunch of dicks. Even the Ruddinator.
