I would say that the problem is centered on what kinds of games are being released right now. It's not so much that there is too little creativity in games in general it's that certain genres are lacking creativity. It's kind of sad that MGS4 has more weapon customizations than games that are indeed shooters, in fact it is more than sad it's absolutely pathetic! I've seen or heard of more creative takes on the RPG in the past few months than I have seen/heard from shooters lately.

there's only so much you can do and most game companies can't afford to try new concepts so they have to make games that will allow them to continue selling games, so we can't realistically expect every game to try something new.
Yes but when it gets to the point and number that final fantasy is at now, you really need to think about starting a new franchise. The final fantasty games aren't even linked to each other in any way though, so calling them sequels isn't really accurate.seroiusly, square, call the next final fantasy something else, also EA cant afford to make new games? they can only afford to make the same sports games and sims over and over?Spore is the most original game to come out of there in at least 5 years
Oh dear.

Ohhh dear.

Please, do us all a favour, and take a look at the way the entertainment business works. Then roll out the threads discussing originality.

Also, what the fuck? EA has put out plenty of games aside from sports and sims and plenty of them were original, at least in their title. How ignorant can you be?
OK for 1 i do grasp how the entertainment industry works.I understand how reluctent companies can be to put out a new brand, when they have a perfectly good cash cow out in the barn. But when the cash cow is around 20 years old and has been overmilked, and even though its milk WAS delicious and how its gotten you through tough times, its finally time to let it go, instead of massaging its utters in a futile attempt to get one last bit on milk out.Oh and also, I was only using sims and sports as examples, but in order to prove to you that EA hasnt had an original series in at least 5 years i took the liberty of pulling up all thier games from wiki
SimCity series
Medal of Honor series 1999
SSX series 2000
James Bond series 1999
The Sims series 2000
Burnout series 2001
The Sims 2 series 2004
Battlefield series 2002
Madden NFL series 1989
NCAA Football series 1993
Crysis 2007
Rock Band (2007)
The Godfather: The Game 2005
PGA tour 2000
As you can see, with the exception of rockband, all the games released within the last 5 years by ea have been either carring on a already established brand, or have been an expansion on an already existing game, and in the case crysis, it's story was ripped from pretty much every action game in the last 10 years(aliens attack Earth, blah blah blah)
EDIT:sorry for the length of this post and how angry it most seem, but I wanted to prove a point

I think that LittleBigPlanet is the most creative game in many years, and that's going to make a big splash in the world of gamers, but even games with no creativity can be fun. I mean, GT5 Prologue isn't exactly creative, but it's a lot of fun to play.

Well if this thread and many other threads like this mean anything, I'm pretty sure that plenty of gamers want creative titles. Depending on how you define creative, I could list off a couple of games that were creative but unfortunately they either weren't implemented well or it was just a bad game overall.

Case in point, Haze (though that's debatable if it's "creative" or not)

I'm sure many companies could afford to be creative once in a while but as previous failures of companies from creative titles like Majesco probably worried them.

There are a few cool new ideas coming out, Braid is fun and original, Mirrors Edge looks nice, Too Human could be cool. I think it was always like this, a tonne of sequels and copy cats, with the occasional gem. Does anyone else remember the glut of Doom, Command and Conquer and Diablo clones back in the day? As for all the people saying originality does not sell, its worth noting that all three of those made a lot more money then their copycats. Its just harder to pull off.

Also, sequels do not have to be unoriginal. Ultima 7 was an amazing step forward for open world games and very innovative despite being the seventh in a franchise.

The most original games out nowadays are still either sequels/remakes/or have so many cliches and stereotypes that playing it is actually hazardous for your health.

Shit. Okay, so all the games I was thinking of were just a touch older than I remembered. But they've published American McGee's Alice, Clive Barker's Undying, Black & White, Freedom Force, and Majestic within the last 7 years.

I voted yes, as Yahtzee once said "in the olden days an original game featured a chef riding on one of those walking stick bug things with a shotgun that shoots ... raptors, nowadays an original game is a space marine with a mustache". (or somthing like that)

Most of the games I play I wouldn't say lack creativity.
Mind you I don't play most main stream games. My current to buy list is this:

Persona 4 (http://www.atlus.com/persona4/)
Valkyria Chronicles (http://www.sega.com/games/?g=284)
Disgaea 3 (http://disgaea.us/dis3/)
Yggdra Union (http://www.atlus.com/yggdraunion/)
The Last Remnant (http://na.square-enix.com/remnant/landing.html)
Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday (No web site yet)

Other than maybe The Last Remnant and Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday (I don't quite have enough information on either to judge yet.) even though 2 of them are sequels I don't think any could be considered uncreative.

What do you mean by lack of creativity? Because Okami borrows very heavily from Zelda, but you claim it's something fresh.

And there is a lot of creativity still around. While there will always be a company that keeps spewing forth the same shit year after year, there will also be the companies that release the true gems.
