I was looking through a gamestop when a thought struck me. Are there too many FPS games out there? I thought about this for a while and more possibilities popped into my head.
It would be perfectly understandable if thats just what people want to play. (understandable = not in any way cool in this case.) Maybe we live in a time when the human mind is becoming easier and easier to amuse when put in front of a box that shows pictures. Or kids are becoming more and more conditioned to point and shoot. I mean, I remember playing Mario Bros on the NES and for a kid my age, it was a challenge. Granted it wasnt something that demanded critical thinking skills, but some FPS games feel so ridiculously easy compared to that stuff. Is it simply because we are trained to the "Go in there. shoot everything that isnt human/wears a different color uniform than you, and move on to the next building." mentality?
Second Option (I know they are out of order from the poll options) is that they are all just too similar. Again, maybe this links back to kids being too easily amused, but I remember the difference between Doom and say.. Hexen (anybody remember that one?) One was demons and bloody shooty technology stuff, the other was demons and ghosts and bloody shooty mythical stuff (and didnt you start with a pitchfork?) and yet they still felt very different. See kids, thats what we grownups like to call originality. Your generation need to get with the program! With the limits of technology back then, developers were still capable of making discernible differences to games. look at Half-life(and before you say anything, I AM NOT A FAN BOY!) This game is a prime example of a developing team putting hard work into a title in order to give it its own unique feel. Everything from environments (but I suppose in half-lifes case, it was how you interacted with said environment.) to character acting was carefully made. Even if the story might seem a little cliche (aliens invading earth that is, not the whole physics broahaha) and the guns are the usual suspects (gravity gun excluded from this sentiment).
Another unfortunate option is that other game genres are just loosing their touch. Remember how super mario sunshine put a fresh spin on the N65 version? And then Galaxy just sugar coated the N64 version and tried to sell it? Maybe thats just whats happening with everything else. Remember that pac-man game for the playstation that was in 3D? while it didnt actually move mountains or anything, I give the designers kudos for at least trying. And its not like the game requires a total overhaul, I enjoyed Majoras Mask almost as much as Ocarina of Time (perhapse I enjoyed Ocarina more simply because I tend to prefer originals. In this case, the first 3D zelda game) It took the same game play style and gently reworked it to fit into new ideas. And even though I didnt like it nearly as much, Ill even give wind walker some credit for at least trying. Most of the improvements that dwell in the FPS genre are simply "More Guns" "Bigger Storyline!" "New Characters!" "New Bullet Time Effect". Honestly, except for the bullet time part, that stuff should go into a sequel without saying. Im saying its expected.
And then there is that small reeking crowd of trolls that honestly plays nothing but FPS games.... for you all.... I have no comment......
Anyways, I just wanted yalls input on this.
