I was looking through a gamestop when a thought struck me. Are there too many FPS games out there? I thought about this for a while and more possibilities popped into my head.

It would be perfectly understandable if thats just what people want to play. (understandable = not in any way cool in this case.) Maybe we live in a time when the human mind is becoming easier and easier to amuse when put in front of a box that shows pictures. Or kids are becoming more and more conditioned to point and shoot. I mean, I remember playing Mario Bros on the NES and for a kid my age, it was a challenge. Granted it wasnt something that demanded critical thinking skills, but some FPS games feel so ridiculously easy compared to that stuff. Is it simply because we are trained to the "Go in there. shoot everything that isnt human/wears a different color uniform than you, and move on to the next building." mentality?

Second Option (I know they are out of order from the poll options) is that they are all just too similar. Again, maybe this links back to kids being too easily amused, but I remember the difference between Doom and say.. Hexen (anybody remember that one?) One was demons and bloody shooty technology stuff, the other was demons and ghosts and bloody shooty mythical stuff (and didnt you start with a pitchfork?) and yet they still felt very different. See kids, thats what we grownups like to call originality. Your generation need to get with the program! With the limits of technology back then, developers were still capable of making discernible differences to games. look at Half-life(and before you say anything, I AM NOT A FAN BOY!) This game is a prime example of a developing team putting hard work into a title in order to give it its own unique feel. Everything from environments (but I suppose in half-lifes case, it was how you interacted with said environment.) to character acting was carefully made. Even if the story might seem a little cliche (aliens invading earth that is, not the whole physics broahaha) and the guns are the usual suspects (gravity gun excluded from this sentiment).

Another unfortunate option is that other game genres are just loosing their touch. Remember how super mario sunshine put a fresh spin on the N65 version? And then Galaxy just sugar coated the N64 version and tried to sell it? Maybe thats just whats happening with everything else. Remember that pac-man game for the playstation that was in 3D? while it didnt actually move mountains or anything, I give the designers kudos for at least trying. And its not like the game requires a total overhaul, I enjoyed Majoras Mask almost as much as Ocarina of Time (perhapse I enjoyed Ocarina more simply because I tend to prefer originals. In this case, the first 3D zelda game) It took the same game play style and gently reworked it to fit into new ideas. And even though I didnt like it nearly as much, Ill even give wind walker some credit for at least trying. Most of the improvements that dwell in the FPS genre are simply "More Guns" "Bigger Storyline!" "New Characters!" "New Bullet Time Effect". Honestly, except for the bullet time part, that stuff should go into a sequel without saying. Im saying its expected.

And then there is that small reeking crowd of trolls that honestly plays nothing but FPS games.... for you all.... I have no comment......

Anyways, I just wanted yalls input on this.

I agree that FPS seems to be the genre that everyone plays since even the nongamer douches like to think theyre cool by pretending to know how to use a gun.

...but, I probably wont be satisfied until a fourth timesplitters, since it has ruined other FPSs for me.

I don't really think so. There is variety in the genre, and although there are a lot, there are plenty of other games too.

When you know you have too many FPS's around, you get games that come out you know nobody is going to care about.

Section 8 is a good example. EVERYTHING about this game screams generic space marine shooter. It's not a bad game per se, it's actually quite functional. However, I can't shake the feeling this game doesn't need to exist, unless they changed it to a Warhammer 40K FPS, then it would be more awesome

Yes definitely. The gaming market (at least it seems to me) is about 60% FPS, 35% sports, and 5% anything else. Sadly my market for gaming is in that 5%. I hate FPS, the only one I EVER liked was Goldeneye, I've given others chances but ugh...no, I just can't do it. And that other 35% being sports, well, I haven't given a damn about sports since 7th grade, and that was a good 14-15 years ago. I was saddened after watching the trailer for Brink. I saw a game that mixed parkour (which I think is fairly cool) and gun play and stuff. Like...Uncharted or Gears of War with back flips. I was like "Holy crap that looks awesome!" then I found it was an FPS and I thought..."how? ...how do you do parkour stuff and shoot guns...in First Person?" I never played Mirror's Edge and I guess that was along a similar vein? I dunno, once I found that was an FPS I lost interest. But yeah, I'm gonna have to totally say there are too many FPS out there. Game Designers/Developers: Please stop!

Yup.

However, that's simply because they are the easiest genre (casual games aside) to pick up and play.

The sad thing is, very few games actually benefit from the first person perspective. For the most part, all it does is kill immersion, disconnects me from my character, lowers my field of vision and limits what actions I can perform to Run and Shoot...

I agree with this. For instance, how would Assassins creed look like in first person? I understand it can work often for the shooter style of game play, but it only completes a game, in my opinion, if I dont actually give a crap about story or anything else but game play (which is pretty rare for me).

Well... the FPS craze is starting to die down. Modern Warfare is going to start crumbling now that Infinity Ward is dripping into Respawn, and Halo... Well Halo is apparently ending soon, so give it another 2-3 years.

Calumon: What about Black Ops?

Jack: Well crap. Trust Treyarch to ruin it.

there is always a room in my gameshelf for effpeesses so i guess i dont care, however i wish that the modernwarfare bubble is going to burst soon and kill all the multiplayer shooters, not the co-op ones just the ones that has arseholes running around shooting each other in the back over and over again.

There can never be enough FPS games, and the sky is falling in if there are not more than two every month, but making another X-COM game would be overdoing it since there have been a couple of low budget attempts by inexperienced devs in the past ten years. Sometimes I hate my fellow emergent narrative art form experiencers (previously known as video game players).

the fist person aspect is populer because it make feel more conected with the action.
The shooting part is because violance is cathartic and it alows people to experancs winning and acomplashment.

Too many.

Lets look whats coming out in releases of FPS games.
Aliens Conlonial Marines, Singularity (these may be 3rd person, but lets face it, not a whole lot of difference now days), Halo Reach, CoD Black Ops, Medal of Honour, Crysis 2, Fear 3.

Now lets look at the games just gone by. Metro 2033, Bad Company 2, AvP, Bioshock 2, MW2, Army of 2:The 40th day. L4d2, Boarderlans, Operation Flashpoint:Dragon Rising, Halo ODST, Section 8, Wolfenstein, Red Faction Guerrilla... I think I can stop now.

And I wish they'd stop too. I can't remember the last time I played a fun platformer game, or even saw one for the xbox 360. I think maybe it was Ratchet and Crank? All these fps games are just going to hurt development. There's only so far you can take the genre and I'm pretty sure it's gotten past its peak now.

I don't mind the FPS genre, but I understand what you mean. I do like FPS's when theres more to the game that just a linear map of endless bad guys and marines "oo-rah-ing" all over the place.

I guess Fallout 3 and Bioshock stand out for me as I enjoyed the exploration and the random strange encounters that broke up the mindless shooting.

Are there too many?Yeah probably but the simple fact is they're popular and until another genre gains the same level of popularity devs will continue to churn them out

It's not like it's never happened before either. In the 8 and 16 bit days it seemed like every second game released was a side scrolling platformer because that genre was popular at the time
