No, no. Diablo 3 is clearly the better game because it brought us the "innovation" of skill runes instead of a skill tree, and then making 90% of all skill combinations utterly fucking worthless.

If Torchlight 2 mires in the trappings of the genre, Diablo 3 sunk them under the weight of its own bullshit.
Except for the part where a lot of the more lackluster D3 skills/runes got buffed while TL2 not only started with a fair number of useless skills that, to my knowledge haven't been buffed, they also nerfed a number of useful spells down to point of being underpowered. On top of that I would rather each level bring entire distinct variants of skills, because even if some of them are less useful its still more interesting than making my fireball do 0.0002% more damage.

OT: What Andrewtheeviscerator said. also hasn't this thread been made about ten thousand times already?
As for Path of Exile, it looks interesting and I really do want it to be good, but i'm not optimistic, certainly not enough to pay money for early access.

For me, Diablo 3 is better by a long shot. While most believe that it doesn't live up to its predecessor (I'm still iffy on that) it still stays leagues ahead of the Torchlight series as a whole. One thing which surprised me about Torchlight 2 was its demo. They seemingly specifically designed the demo to convince people not to buy the game. I mean the whole thing is a mixture of 1 hit kills and vast expanses of nothing. Needless to say it got stale very quickly.

While Diablo 3 has some controversial features (Always online, Auction house) and controversial changes (Art style, Skill system), Blizzard manage to pull the off in a way that very few developers could do. The always online becomes irrelevant (except in a few special circumstances) when their high quality servers are factored in (negligible lag on shit tier Aussie net) and provides worth while enhancements (Seamless single and multi player). The auction house provides an easy to use way of trading, something which is needed in games like these.

The new art style and enhancements to the engine (or rebuild, idk) provide some awesome experiences. For a good idea of what I'm referring to, compare the start of Act 5 in Diablo 2 to Act 3 in Diablo 3. That shit is awesome. The new skill system allows greater flexibility and customisation while also encouraging experimentation. Blizzard really did a good job with this, most of the skills and their runes are well balanced making most of them viable options which then encourages build diversity (unlike in Diablo 2 where you are all but forced into "optimal" builds). The gameplay in general looks, feels and plays better than ever. Making every encounter highly enjoyable.

But that's enough ranting about Diablo 3. Just make sure you research them both well and also look at the alternatives like Path of Exile (which hits open beta soon), the upcoming Grim Dawn or some older (but still great) games like Titan Quest or Diablo 2.

I can't go back to Torchlight, I could barely muster up enough interest to beat it once. If the second one is anything like the first one I'll get another 20 hours out of it and be just as sick of it. I don't know what it is, but that game just doesn't have "it". I got more playtime out of Diablo 3, about 180 hours or so, it's getting better also, they are patching the hell out it, it's still not the quality I'd expect from Blizzard but it's much better than what Torchlight offered me.

I'd rather play Diablo 2 than either of them.

Yeah, PoE (path of exile) is the better hack and slash game (Best of the recent releases), followed by Torchlight 2 (at least I didn't regret buying it) and then D3......which I should have returned when I had the chance. The no PvP thing is the nail in D3's coffin ..but honestly I had given up on it already. I stopped playing it 2 weeks after it was released...but didn't return it figuring it would get better over time, and PvP would be released later.

I hear it has gotten better......but from what I read it's not enough to interest me in playing it again. Maybe if an expansion comes out that adds alot, I'll be happy I still own it.

Torchlight II for sure.

Diablo 3 was a great dissapointment. The only thing Diablo 3 does better than D2 is the characterization of followers.
