When is it acceptable if ever? Where does the majority of the escapist morals, relating to this important issue regarding the future of the games industry, lie? Is there ever justifcation, or is it simply okay with you and more or less all your games are presents from China. Is there a special ring of hell for people who torrent games?

If you have an alternate argument or a different opinion, tell us!

I have only downloaded games where either i've lost the disk or its broken etc or if the game is not sold anymore and theres no way of getting hold of it.

But otherwise I prefer to pay for games as it helps the industry and promotes new, better games.

if there is no longer anyone that created the game reaping the benefits of a sold copy, then by all means torrent away. Publishers don't count as people, so I could care less if you screw them over and torrent the game, just so long as the developers/creators are not getting screwed in the process.

It's not never acceptable, really. But I just don't care.
so, its... acceptable?

Double negatives aside, I tend to use the Moses theorem. If a game is older than moses, and is no longer available even in the bargain bins, its not really a problem anymore.

Steam does a good job of circumventing this problem-- even evil genius is available via steam now.

I torrent games when I need backups and the original has copy protection or if the game is so old it's virtually impossible to find.

Is that acceptable? Depends on who you ask really.

I mainly just like the idea if the game is pretty old and basicly not sold anymore
Pretty much this, I usually only pirate games like that. Also demo-less games I want to try out. I sadly have no gamer friends where I live, so trying it out at someone else's place is not possible.

When the game is no longer being sold by the original publisher and creators. Technically a game disc being broken and playing a back-up is legal, but you were meant to make that back-up in the first place.

Abandonware isn't sketchy though, that's fair game.

It is acceptable if:

* You bought it, and the disc is gone and/or broken.
* The game is no longer published, and therefore almost impossible to get a hold of.
* The game is not being published in your region, nor will be.

I have torrented games placed in the public domain... one of which, naming no names, had its release revoked (or, rather, the guy who put it found out that the permission he had wasn't from the right guys) the day afterward. I have also downloaded some abandonware that seemed to have been released into the public domain.

I don't torrent stuff that's still available on discs or by direct download. I prefer to respect copyright.

I didn't want to be lazy but halfway through typing I saw somebody had already said it.

I do it rarely, mostly to play games that are too hard to find or too expensive. I prefer avoiding that whenever possible though.

I also like to back-up the rare and valuable games I have to make sure the originals stay in good condition. In fact, I rarely play my classic consoles anymore, opting for emulators and a good usb gamepad instead.
