It's never acceptable. It's essentially theft. If your disk is broken, return it for a new one. If you bought the game and lost it, too bad. If you lose your laptop, you cant just steal one, you have to replace it a proper way. It the same with games. Just because you owned a copy of the game does not entitle you to get other copies of it for life. If the game is no longer sold, then there is a good chance that it can be found somewhere on the internet from someone who is giving it out for free or at a minimal price. Seriously, this issue makes me mad.
Publishers have been making it very clear for years we dont own the games we buy, we purchase a lifelong licence for personal use. If i keep the disk I buy in perfect condition great but its unlikely given how easy disks are to scratch , break, corrupt etc. My lifetime licence does not expire with the cds lifetime. And its not essentially theft, at worst its copyright infringement, which deprives nobody of anything. If somebody wasnt going to pay for it anyway then its not a lost sale, has no effect on bottom lines.

That's rather anarchic coming from someone who said anarchy wouldn't work. >_>
Magic doesn't exist either, but I still like it.
And I'm not so much anti-laws as I am apathetic towards them.
If a law is in my way, I'll break it, but I won't go out of my way to break laws just for the hell of it.
Same here, then.

When is it okay?
Why, whenever you can get away with it.

Just like anything else.

Unless someone comes right out and says "You are FORBIDDEN from doing [this.]"
Then I'll do it just out of spite.
Sometimes twice.
What if they give a good reason, such as "pushing that button will release a pedophile from prison"?

I bought Fallout 3 for Xbox 360, and loved it, but not enough content to keep me satisfied anymore, so I downloaded it for PC, and have played it once.

yes downloading is free, but it's just more fun if you buy it.

I see no issues with replacing a broken game, game that has been re-released, back-up, it's older than christ etc etc.

I've also no issues with downloading the games to play them for a bit as a demo. Which is also legal i believe as long as you destroy/delete your copy in 24 hours.

I mean, so many crap games get released these days, you pay £40 and finish it 5 hours later thing "That's it?!".

I would also like to add, it is perfectly alright to torrent anything made by EA. Steal to your hearts content off those bastards! :p

It's never okay, although I admit I'd do it if I wanted a game and could get it for free.

Hypocritical? You bet, but I hate buying a game and thinking "this took me seven hours to earn."
*COUGH, COUGH* That is all

As to my views, well i guess it isn't great to download, unlike films and music (maybe hypocritical too, but meh) But there is a difference between immoral and illegal, and i don't think it should be illegal.
As for the moral part, mine are pretty skewed, so it doesn't bother me.
