Now before I criticize the literary flaws, I should probably ask your age and education, but I won't. I will say above anything else that your opinions would likely be taken more seriously if your writing was better, now obviously this doesn't apply to your spoken opinions.

Now to address your actual question: why are opinions being shot down? Well my answer to that is simple really, it's something along the lines of I DON'T GIVE A FLYING FUCK! No seriously though it's just a fact of life. Opinions differ, people are dicks, draw your own conclusions.

If people didn't give a flying fuck, why would they bother to post?

The problem isn't that people don't give a flying fuck, the problem is that certain people can't bear it when another person doesn't agree with them.

Ha, dude I trolled like crazy Sunday night and I never got shit dropped on me. This kinda reminds me of the justice system in a way...

Anyway, you get shut down for your opinion, you can ignore it and live a happy life. It keeps happening, then you damn well need to fight back, son. Don't go nuts on them, try to act very calm when people start bringing you down for your opinion. Sometimes, I get set off too easily, so you need to watch that. Your getting into a "debate" not an "argument." Try to come from a smart, mature standpoint (not nerdy smart, more like experienced adult). Calling you a n00b would be about as effective as calling a huge beast a wimp if you counter it the right way. The best way to do that is to insult them in a way that doesn't seem like an insult at all! Especially if you word it the right way that it actually fits into context with the debate.

It's a battle of whits, and from what I can tell, your friends don't seem to have much. It's all about building yourself up to having the superior opinion, but not looking like a douche in the process.

Ahh. Theuromancer. The problem is when you shoot down that kind of idea it is impossible to do so without derailing a thread and making all the other posters giggle. If people just said "oohhhkay right" and carried on talking things might retain some interest, not that the gladitorial sport of internet humiliation isn't gratifying occassionally, but still it isn't necessary quite as often as people engage in it.
It doesn't really matter what we do or do not do. It was an offensive proposition brought on by a stupid idea that was based on an even dumber reason and the mods would not approve of said hateful thread cluttering up the forums.

A lot of opinions are being shot down because they are often based off of dumb ideas and reasons.
Could you please quantify that for me? What is a dumb idea and a dumb reason?
An idea or opinion that is either one sided or lacks the proper education on the subject.

The following are arguments made by a user in threads they created. They were later ripped to shreds by blood thirsty moderators.

Idea: "We should nuke China"

Reason: The OP believed it would prevent an "inevitable" war.

And another one was there was a guy just a few nights ago that said he found to solution to all life's problems. And in short it was be baked from weed all day long. And thought was suppose to save us. The reason he gave was pretty terrible, but didn't mean he wasn't called out on his idea

No I don't give a flying fuck. Others? Maybe.

Well I think the general idea is to make your options heard, never about having people like or respect it.

Like if you ran around saying RE4 and the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker were terrible games. Then I naturally would have to resort to lighting your house on fire.

This is just the internet after all.

They probably don't give a crap, but they won't pass up an opportunity to increase their post count. Hence all of the "this thread sucks, your ideas suck" or something along those lines.

It seems with the increase of video games, music, and telivison shows it is even harder and harder for one's opinion to be heard. Here is my examples: My friends. Being the "emo" of the group i have a very interesting taste in music. Ironically I have a few best friends who's favorite band is slipknot. So every band, song, album, Musician is no were near as good as slipknot or any of there work. It really doesn't get to me because I have my opinion and my opinion is "slipknot can go away they are nothing compared to Gerard Way, Synyster Gates, Travis Barker, Jared Leto, or Chris Carrabba".
Another example is in video games i favor World War Two and Third Person Shooters but in art class years ago "Those are nothing comapred to brawl and if you dont like it it's probably because you suck at it NOOB"! Again with the hate for my little opinion. And last example is here on The Escapist. Now I personally don't like new anime besides Death Note and One Piece because it is the same for each one other than those. OH BIG EYES AND BOOBED 13 YEAR OLD SCHOOL GIRLS FIGHTING DEMONS!!! And for saying this I was reported for trolling.
Now I ask you. The Reader, why is it that you think opinions are being shot down? Give me your opinion or stories. I'd like to know that I'm not the only person facing this problem. I feel like freakin' Montag(Fahrenheit 451 allusion)
Hah Hah Hah, did you just imply emo kids have an interesting taste in music?

Now, if you weren't being a fart-sniffing tit.. I could understand but the fact you called metalcore and numetal bands interesting just pushes it over the edge.

Maybe if you actually appreciated other peoples tastes/opinions you might not get shot down so badly by other people.

Oh the incredible irony of your statement. Methinks you might have misunderstood what he was saying as well.

Umm...
Because your opinion was not supported with relevant evidence, statistics or the necessary argumentative language?

Well there are many people, as many of the other Escapists have said, that will shoot down your opinion in a heartbeat. Alot of people have the same problem with music, games and movies. But others aren't understanding the point. Thing is, it's okay to express your opinions, but if others bash it, they're just conformists. Examples: I love HL2 (VALVe in general) but everyone, EVERYONE (that play games) love Halo (Obviously you see my delema). Same with my liking of KoRn. And when your opinions are challenged, it is human nature, to retaleate, this'll develope into a flame war. My point is express your opinions to someone that has equal itelliegence. Or is it... (did this all on my phone :D )

If it were possible to distill the essence of saying the exact opposite of the truth, this pair of sentences would be a strong candidate for the honor.

The only people who fully disagree with my opinions are people who know nothing about the subject. My musical taste, for instance, is called weird and nonsensical by... let's just say people who are more than content with a 2gb ipod.

If your opinions tend to be a sweeping generalization of a subject, of course people are going to show you the exception to your rule, because it was ignorant of you in the first place to think that way. Given the opportunity, of course people are always going to try to "one up" you in a way, which generally leads to either good discussion or terrible arguments. You were right to be reported, and are not right about any of the music you mentioned being good.*

*See what I did there with the opinions? Seriously though, I kind of enjoy 30 Seconds To Mars.
