Okay, thread question from a noob. Can I add a both option to the poll? o_O
Yes.
Click the "Edit" button on any of your posts in this thread, and near the bottom will be a section titled Edit the Poll.

From there, it's pretty obvious what you do.
EDIT: Calm down. We won't crucify you for not knowing how to edit a poll!

Pokemon can really become long-winded during multiplayer since it takes so long for an attack to start up and the health bar to decrease, not to mention the text move slower than Duke Nukem Forever

Whichever fits the game better.
I can't imagine Zelda as a turn-based game, but I also can't see how you could pull Fire Emblem off in realtime.

So, random one. Which d'you prefer- can be in any genre, or anything- turn based or realtime combat?

Personally, I can't stand Turns on anything but gameboys, but that's me!
I agree, I don't really feel that I am participating in the fight unless I am madly pressing buttons trying to get the right combos. Anything else is anti-climactic!
You clearly haven't played a modern shooter or action game. I think you'd like Bioshock or Killzone 2.

I like both, but prefer to have a choice like in FF7. With it's ATB active, recommended or wait settings.(only "wait" would stop combat when your ATB gauge is filled)

Hang on, I have to wait for my time meter to fill...

Okay, I don't like turn-based combat, with the exception of strategy games.
How is an ATB gauge turn based?

It's not as if enemies will stop attacking until you're done selecting your moves, like in a true turn based game.(e.g. pokemon, advance wars)

I like both. It's sometimes good in a game to have both because you could need a moment to think what to do next. Though I prefer the Turn based ones.

I prefer Real time. Of course I usually get impatient during turn based games as the enemy does it's movements (in Strategy this means watching hundreds of soldiers move across the map slowly towards my armies, while in RPG's this means watching stupidly long animations again... and again... and again...). But then you'll all yell at me and say that i'm the reason games have been dumbed down in recent years.

ATB is somewhat turn based combat system. You wait for the meter to fill up and you attack, the enemy does the same and so on.

There are also some turn based combat games where you lose your turn if you take too long (Baten Kaitos).

I prefer turn based combat. I have a lot more better experiences with that.

Realtime or both.....

Fallout 3's vats work great and half life 2's realtime is also so good its worth taking with you wherever you go in gaming but Turn based on its own is just boring.

I picked both. I like Final Fantasy, but I kick ass at everything else too.
When will developers make a game where you can choose how the game plays? That will be so freaking awesome. Like choosing whether you want to play turn based or tactical based. Fps or 3rd person. D-pad or analog sticks. I am still waiting for a game that gives me those options.

Both. Total War games have perfected this for strategy and Valkyria Chronicles had perfected it for JRPGs

Van Buren (the canceled fallout 3) would let you choose between turn-based and realtime combat.

on point. i would go for realtime

I think that both systems have good qualities. Oh wait, that means that the real time only whiners will win and I only ever get to play real time games in the future. If developers see that the majority will be happy enough with a real time game but there a lot of people who only play real time then some of my favourite types of games will die out.

I'm changing my vote to militant turn-based fundamentalist. Never buying a real-time "so called" strategy game ever again and I'm going to start to burn the schools where these so called "humans" were educated into thinking that real-time is suitable for anything other than fodder for farm animals.
