I like both but I'm much better at TBS. In RTS games I usually get bogged down because I take ages to make decisions and end up getting terrified and crushed by my opponent. TBS caters to me because I can happily sit and watch my cool army, and zoom in and out looking at all the little details.

CIV 4 is a good example. I zoom in on enemy cities and listen to the war drums beat, just thinking about all the army units getting ready for battle in that city...

Yes, I am completely out of my mind thank you very much.

Turn based all the way.
Seems most RTS focus on multiplayer as well, can't think of any RTS that has a campaign mode with a good story compared to stuff like Fire Emblem etc.

Both.

Not only do both approaches have their merits and advantages, but there are also gray areas (real time games that proceed so slowly they might as well be turn based), but also games that utilize both to great effect. Usually, this means that a broader Strategic view is in one of the two forms, while the narrower Tactical situations are in the other.

For instance, Total War series uses Turn based for its Strategic map, while the individual battles are played out in Real time. On the other hand, the old XCOM games (the REAL XCOM games) used a Real time Strategic map and Turn based tactical missions.

Both are good.

I highly suggest, however, the great games that combine the two. For more historical games go with the Total War series, but for super awesome sci-fi space ship battlin' good times go and get yourself Sword Of The Stars and it's expansions.

The main reason I tend to go more towards TBS games with RTS elements is that RTS games on single player can get a little dull after a while, and RTS games in multi-player are full of twitchy fuck wits who believe the term "strategy" is defined as "drown them in bodies".

I cant stand RTS. In all games I have played if you cant micromanager at ridiculous speed then you suck. In turn-based strategies you have time to think and do whatever you want. Thats why my personal strategy game is Civilization IV.

RTS is as much about the ability to multi-task and have fast reaction times as it is about strategy.
Turn based is about as strategic as you can get, but it's less immersive and less intense.

They're both fun, but I suck at both of them.

I prefer turn based resource gathering, since in RTS all my gatherer units just get mopped up.

But I prefer RTS battles, since I like to control my men, and actually develop a strategy, rather than just rely on the roll of a dice.

Total War series is a pretty good match for me to be honest, even though I still suck at it.

Thats because this thread actually has some discussion value, not fanboyism.

As for the OT : Each has their place in my heart. I prefer Turn based when I want to relax and just think about the best way to win and all possible counters before I even start (Civ 4). Real time, however, is more accurate to actual combat, which is fun sometimes.

I don't think anybody seriously chooses tbs over real time, unless they found a great rpg game.I did only recently,so I can't decide.

I'm playing Rome: Total War at the moment, which has elements of both, and I'm enjoying it. However, I have played more RTS games.

I prefer real-time, because it seems strange when my enemy politely waits for me to flank them. However, it can be difficult to issue orders fast enough in real-time.

It depends if I'm playing single player or multiplayer. Games like Civilisation are great fun with loads of replay value in single player but take almost unbearable long in large multiplayer games. In multiplayer the extra speed your opponents get in real time makes the game a much funner challenge.

I much prefer RTS games. Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander and World in Conflict being my top favourites

Being able to watch your strategy out manoeuvre your opponent in Real Time is just a massive trill for me, that or just massing enough units to level a planet (sup com :D)
