Prototype. Good tutorial level.

NWN2 also featured one that was (gasp) not only skipable, but one which, if you wanted the story still, you could disable the tutorial part of the story.

no, I don't like them, but they're kind of a necessary evil for newer players (no, not the kind who is trying out the game for the first time, but rather people who are trying out games in general for the first time).

And there was one of the Spider-man games (either the first one based on the movie or Spider-man 3) where if you skipped the tutorial level, Bruce Campbell said something along the lines of "oh, look at Mr. Cool. He's too good to play the tutorial level." Then went over the gameplay mechanics in the missions, all the while explaining that if you played the tutorial you would know how to do this stuff. It's better than it sounds, believe me.
And that's why i love the Spiderman game.(the one based on the first movie)

The ones where you can just mess around in or fits well with the story line are fun. Red Faction: Guerilla and Fallout 3's tutorial was rather entertaining.

I think they are fine as long as they go at a quick enough space, some are just annoyingly slow.

The headbanger mission in Brutal Legend worked as a fun tutorial. I think if it's entertaining then it doesn't matter how redundant it gets.

also, I think that if they don't set it up as an obvious tutorial then it's good. Again, like Brutal Legend did.

I don't mind them, unless you have to redo them EVERY time you restart the game, like Fallout 3 of Black and White 2.

It's so damn annoying.

Even the world's crappiest tutorial is fine if it's optional, or even better, a seperate thing to the campaign (different button on start menu)

The exception to this rule is COD4, if only because it's an awesome tutorial. Has anyone else ran off to explore the compound and do the obstacle course?

I usually read the manual, so explaining what button does what is not something I appreciate. Getting a feel for the game mechanics, on the other hand, is always helpful. So it really comes down to whether it's rehashing what I could read for myself, or if it's actually a tutorial.

I like it if their optinal, ESPECIALY on RPG's, because the developers know that your going to play the game again just a bit different, however you have to wade through an hour of nonsence to acualy replay the game. Fallout 3 im looking at YOU. also borderlands a bit since that video plus the tutorial takes like 10 minutes to complete, and ive made like 5 charactors already.

It depends. I always like to know what am doing, before I play a game. However if the tutorials start to drag, on and start talking about stuff that I would already no in a game, like making your player move, then I find them very annoying.

Also I like to have a choice weather or not I, want to do them.

I usually hate them - for example, I loved Morrowind's 'throw you into the world, work it out for yourself' attitude, but Oblivion had a yawningly long one that got very boring after you made your third account.
Funny, I felt the exact opposite about the two games' tutorials.

You nailed Morrowind, and that's exactly what I hated about it. Perhaps because I was relatively new to the Elder Scrolls series when I played it, but I recieved no info on how to play really. They gave me a dagger and a few useless objects and left me out to dry.

Oblivion felt like an actual tutorial, and was still well done. You are right, it gets tedious if you repeatedly go through it, but that's why I saved right before that sewer grate at the end.

If a tutorial is just the first level worked into the story, I don't normally get bothered by it, but I have to wonder about having tutorial levels in games where the user can adjust the difficulty level. I mean, if you want to get used to the controls, wouldn't you just play through on easy the first time?

There's also a question of whether or not tutorials are really necessary in games that aren't particularly difficult. Or, conversely, if you have to devote an hour to trying to teach a player the controls...maybe that's a sign that there's a critical error in the gameplay and button assignment. oO

I usually think the best way to introduce gameplay mechanics is to have a 'help' feature that you can turn on and off. That way, you get messages at an appropriate time if you're not sure what to do, but you don't have them constantly bothering you and telling you to move the analogue stick to walk forward.

What I hate most about tutorial levels is if they disable a function until some other random character teaches your character how to use it. I already KNOW the analogue stick makes my character move - don't just have them stand there!

In Simpsons Hit and Run, the loading screen (which was incidentally a newspaper kind of thing) said, "Studies Show 90% of games start with an easy tutorial level" in the tutorial. I thought that was pretty good.

Depends, If it's optional thats fine, or if they are sneakily put into the first mission/ part of the game like with fallout 3. What is not fine however is what GTA 4 decided to do. The first half of the game was spent learning that bullets come out of guns and cars are fast. To me this made the game pretty impossible to replay as you had to get past that boring section first every time in order to get to the real missions.

Vault 101 in Fallout 3 was an alright toturial level.
Vault 101 was a pretty sweet tutorial, it was entertaining, and it really set up the atmosphere of contrast between the vaults and the wasteland
