I've read some bad books in my time and Twilight was one of the worst. The closest it came to being interesting was when they mentioned Werewolves, and then it went straight back to Mary Sue's school life.[b/] Harry Potter is good, I don't care what anyone says.[/b] It was entertaining and comparing it to Twilight has made me appreciate it even more.
Agreed. Don't let them get you down. It's just "cool" to hate anything popular on the escapist.

It has to be said though, Harry Potter was released at about the same time as His Dark Materials: The Northern Lights (The Golden compass if your American). The fact that it received less praise that Potter is a kick in the balls.

I enjoyed the first one a lot, very funny, clever and different, with some really memorable kick ass characters. Seriously, whats not to love about a Flatulent Dwarf, a teenage evil genius and a kick ass body guard. But its been dragging on for..what is it?...6 books now? I picked up the most resent one and it was a real struggle to finish.

True, but Dark materials isn't media friendly enough to reach Harry Potter levels. Can you imagine trying to pitch a film of the books that was faithful to them? Any major studio would kick you out the door.

I tend to hate everything popular, but I don't think Harry potter deserves all the hate it gets. It's well written, imaginative and interesting (but I don't like how everyone goes nuts over it). I wish I could say the same for the latest movie.

I'm going to get on the Dark Materials series once I'm done reading Carrie. :)

True. It was torture to see what they did to the book in THAT film. Either fuck the media and make it the anti christian, gay angels, sac religious fest its suppose to be, or just don't make it at all.

I went to see Twilight with friends, and OMGWTF? The movie was pretty awful, but what rocked me was the fact that the entire female population of the audience screamed whenever Edward graced the screen.

I understand its a teenage girl's book, but it seems bad even for that.
So Harry Potter wins my vote. Despite the cop-out ending.

SMeyers fantasies, yes. But not everyones'. I will agree that some girls probably fantasize about that, but certainly not all.
And yeah, nobody wants to be raped. That I think we can all agree on.
Of course not everyone fantasizes about those things. I should've been more specific. To all the stuff I said about the perfect male and whatnot, replace "female" with "fan of the series".

Also, a series that is popular because teenage girls like drama deserves to be hated.
Why? It's shallow, but it's appealing. If other people enjoy it, why does it deserve hate?
Why would other people enjoying it free it from hate?

I thought Harry Potter was pretty entertaining, I read the series all at once about a year or so ago when I had time to read for leisure. It also seemed like a good trend at the time to have kids actually interested in reading something rather than playing a video game or surfing the internets. Speaking on Twilight I doubt that I would ever pick the book (books?) up unless it was recommended to me by a friend - looking at how bad the plot for the movie appeared to be (angsty teenage girl falls in love with vamp? wtf.)

The Worst Witch beats Harry Potter imho.
Torchwood beats Twilight, and that's how low I rate it.

And to Bunyip, Twilight is the feminine form of Emmanuelle. Both totally unrealistic fapfests over the ultimate playmate.
Difference being that no male would dare take their gf to see it, and it's held up as "irresponsible and degrading" whilst Twilight is full of dragged males, and lauded as "Female Liberation!"

(BTW, Emmanuelle: 74% Twilight: 50%)

But the cartoon above does say it better.

They're both extremely bad excuses for books, and they should never have been written!!!

I was just going to say Artemis Fowl ^^

As a youngster book it's criminally underestimated.

Because it brings joy and doesn't harm others.
Who ever said twilight doesn't harm others, violant fans have hurt others just for not liking it plenty of times.
Also, it harms the brain stems to try to figure out how it brings joy.

I've honestly never read either one, but I carry a personal grudge against Twilight for destroying the mind of every once rational girl I know and sending them spiraling down into a world of fantasy where they seem to be convinced that they vampires exist and there's one apparently mildly attractive one who will sweep them off their feet and do whatever else happens in that book. I don't know.

My vote goes to Harry Potter, I guess.

I always talk down to twilight because its a obvious girl book.

One day I decided to actually read a little of the book so that I would actually know what I'm talking about. As I reached for the book, my elbow twitched violently as if in a last ditched effort to never touch those....things.

I took it as a sign.

Honestly, I bet I would love those books, but I would lose respect for myself as the author probably was preaching to teens with those crushes and boy girl conflicts.
