Just so we're all clear, the use of the word Ugly in the title refers to more than just physical repulsiveness. I'm asking your opinion on whether you would like to see a character that has any or all of these characteristics: has/will done/do horrible actions, hard-to-like personality, has a general vileness about themselves (demonic taint, creepy features, etc), or a deformity, as well as being physically unattractive.

This came to my mind because I've been playing D&D since I was old enough to understand half of the words they use. That's about 9 or 10 solid years I've been spending actively trying to scare off the opposite sex, and I've noticed a few patterns in the players (I'm usually the DM). To this day, only three characters I have ever had the pleasure of DMing with have had characteristics that make them less likable and sexy.
1. A white-collar worker who distances himself from everyone around him and is out of shape for his age (32) 2. A foul-mouthed dhampir prick with a number of almost-disfiguring tattoos and piercings on his face and body. 3. A cleric of the Pestilence God, who is covered in hideous pus-weeping boils, a face that's been forcefully rearranged several times, and who vomits maggots on his foes as a primary attack.

Everyone else has made an effort to keep their characters looking good and keeping their personalities likable, and I often get called out on how most of the NPCs the group runs into usually have some sort of personality or mental disorder that makes them hard to get along with (narcissist, barely reformed criminals, honor-less, brutally honest, misanthropic, etc.)

Thing is, I prefer characters to be ugly, be it on the outside or the inside. An unattractive/flawed character resonates with me because that's how us tiresome human beings are, and I've realized that I can care a lot more about the plight of Marv from Sin City or Markus Fenix from Gears of War than I can with Cloud from Final Fantasy. It's more believable, I can see some ugly son of a ***** having more of a problem in life more than a pale-skinned kid in dire need of a haircut, and I find myself drawn to characters with major personality issues that would make them hard to get along with. And when I say "major personality issues" I don't mean, "they swear a lot in between kicking ass and people don't like that" or "his father died in front of him as a child, so now he's a loner".

I'm talking full-fledged problems, like a guy saying, "I'm so fucking hard right now" after gunning down a bunch of enemy soldiers, or some fellow throwing his friend into a river after beating the shit out of him with a cane for some imagined slight.

I don't know. Maybe their defective personalities speak to me as a loner, but another player in my group refuses to find redemption or redeeming qualities in any character in any media, meaning we butt heads quite often, so I thought I'd ask the people about their opinion. You know, democracy and whatnot.

TL;DR: What's your opinion on ugly characters, and who's your favorite?

Hahaha Oblivion.
OT: I think most of the games I play the most let you choose your appearance. Mass Effect, Skyrim, Fallout. You can make yourself as ugly as you want and no-one really cares, which kinda gives the optimistic view that appearance counts for little. In a perfect world, maybe...

Potato is the only option that makes logical sense, there's scientific evidence backing it.

I always really like characters who are more flawed and unlikable than perfect, that way the character interaction and motives have to be more interesting. Especially when they start becoming dirt-bags during the course of the game. It also depends on the context of the story, though, I suppose.

You dont think Cloud had major personality issues? he was pretty messed up the entire game its just he didnt know it for a while.

I am not too bothered if my character is ugly or beautiful as long as they are interesting, mind you I dont care if they are believable or not in comparison to our world as long as they are believable in relation to the game.

My favourite ugly character er Cervantes from SC does he count hes an evil undead pirate who reaps peoples souls or at least he did when he had the Soul Edge.

If your on about just ugly twisted evil personalities I would say Hazama from Blazblue is definitely up there for one of my favourite although hes not especially ugly physically speaking but yeah he has issues a bit like the Joker does which makes him very entertaining.

A few minor flaws make for an excellent character.

A completely flawed/unlikable character is a major turn-off for me. I don't like playing as a jerk, perverted, or an evil person. That is not who I am, nor is it who I wish to be.

As far as "physical beauty" goes, I tend to like at least average-looking people. It really bothers me if the protagonist is especially extra-ugly as you're going to be seeing the protagonist for most of the game.

Really? My experience with PnP gamers has been the opposite. It seems like attributes such as Appearance and Charisma are often used as dump stats, so I not infrequently have found myself in parties made up of a bunch of surly, socially handicapped, fugly-ass adventurers. As such, RPing our way through social encounters can be pretty funny.

Anyway, I generally would *prefer* to play an attractive character, but when allocating stats, I never end up with enough points for everything I want. If I had to choose, I'd rather be effective than attractive, so attractiveness/social skills tend to go bye-bye during character creation.

I don't really share OP's fascination with ugliness or personality defects, but they can be funny if role-played well.

As far as i can affect my player's decisions in the gameplay i wouldn't object to any kind of character. If anyone can consider me ugly i can effectively end them and be the only diamond in the game

On the real topic since the question is asked i think any old school gamer wouldnt object to an ugly protagonist since the golden era started with a silent first person protagonist or a pixelated mess that anyone would not describe as a role model

To that end i vote potato cuz there are several recipes to choice from
Fried
Baked
Filled with delicious things
Baked and filled with delicious things
Filled baked and fried with delicious things
Baked fried and then filled with delicious things
Fried then filled with delicious things
Fried then filled with delicious things and then baked

ok im hungry now

Hmm ...

*Looks at Saints Row The Third*

Well for my co-op game with my friend, I made my guy SO ugly that ... THAT it was impossible to be that ugly.
Yet it made the story awesome and fun.

Also he was naked, rippedm large package and had yellow hair.
I called him the yellow man.

He hunts villains naked with his purple dildo bat hoping to knock them over and T-Bag their face.
I also yell this most of the time.

"Yer cannot change yer fate!"

He was awesome, so I don't mind ugly protagonists. :D

Don't diss the Nameless One dude! His story was pretty interesting and the scars were just a consequence. Demonic taint is fine too as long as the character's decent. I once rolled a d&d Tiefling Elf Warrior who had absolutely no idea where he came from or why he was different. It was a pretty interesting run, especially when a relative from his original plane decided he was the key to his plans and had to be brought back.
It's not necessarily innovative but the character and his quirks were interesting to play out. Now a bland character with some spikes and no interesting backstory or relations is just a bland character with some spikes or a bland asshole and so on so forth.

i wanna know why we haven't seen a Game namely a RPG game in which you character is quite attractive, Women/men throw themself at you and stuff like that. then BAM 2nd act your horrible disfigured and then we see how Characters perceive you and how radically different you are.

just throwing that out there

I'd be open to it, but if my character was virulent and outwardly disgusting, I'd at least want the game to address that.

Although I would rather see a game (other than BoI) where you are disfigured through your experiences.

Well I really just need them to fit the setting, I don't expect to play Barbie in the next God of War game and Barbie game fans probably don't expect a gruff spartan madman.

The thing about the physicality of attractiveness is that its almost always a temporary state. It doesn't matter if the person is fuck ugly or boner enducingly attractive, given enough time around that person you start to become indifferent to how they physically look and appreciate who they are as a person.

In regards to narratives, I found John Marston from Red Dead to be physically repulsive, not just unattractive but proper offending the eyes ugly... especially without his hat.

But over the course of the story, that changed and I was endeared to the character. I couldn't even see him as being ugly any more. The character grew on me.

Now, John isn't exactly a hard case to resolve, he isn't grotesque, just very unappealing. But decent writing can make an immediately unappealing man grow on you over time.

As for personality based ugliness. Thats a tough nut. The issue here is that its the personality we become attached to, not the physical person. I can't envision a story where the lead is a complete asshole and for it to still garner the interest of its audience. There always has to be some form of endearment... a silver lining to their coarse attitude. A straight up dickhead is hard to form an attachment with.

Nameless One from Planescape: Torment is pretty much as fuck-ugly as they get. I do believe that made the game a whole lot better.

Maybe it's just me but, I wouldn't classify 95% of the people I know as "ugly." So no. It's just unrealistic. If you mean "ugly" as in not built like a body builder or a swimsuit model, for one you have incredibly high standards, for another I can't say I care as long as it fits the setting.
