A few months ago I posted the teaser trailer and asked if people were impressed - the general response? No people weren't. Thou the clever hiding of tyranids in the trailer was appreciated by many. Many of us fealt that it should be more like the cinematic CGI we have come to expect from the opening trailers of the DoW - Dawn of War, RTS, franchise from THQ.

Then they posted this trailer (watch the whole thing the first half is a bit dull) - the first real movie trailer for the film and whilst I still do not like the ultramarines (I dislike the whole by the book motto they have going - I'm more of a Grey Knights and Space Wolves man but anyway...) - This trailer looks special. At first the face CGI technology looked wrong and cheap but now it appears crisp, defined and a little eerie in its accurate representation if I am completely honest. So I wanted to ask what other people thaught of the trailer and if they too feel this could be heading somewhere beautiful. Because of course making films isn't cheap and a huge risk so if this film fails I will have grey hair probably before Games workshop has the money and bravery to try something like this again.

Personally I think this is looking awesome.

This has been posted before IIRC...I said something along the lines of: Poor animation, the guy doing the marines voice was ok IMO and the intro monologue was awful. I'd still buy it though

it could have been better, a lot better, if it was live-action with lots of computer effects, but upon noticing the dead Imperial Fists, i noticed it looked suspiciously similar to my wallpaper: until the day we die

I'm sceptic about this. It doesn't look too bad, apart from the ship, which looks like something out of an old Wingcommander game. But I doubt they'll be able to tell a compelling story using Space Marines, worst of all the Ultramarines. I'll see how it goes and probably give it a look, though.

And now the weird question of a non-native speaker: "They are more than mortal" Wouldn't that mean that they are very mortal?

It looks quite good. I'd like to see a bit more, but my interest is piqued. I'm a big 40k fan and I do like the Space Marines (including the Ultramarines). As I recall Dan Abnett wrote the script, but I don't know why they didn't get Graham McNeill to do it since his Ultramarine books are fantastic.

Well, at least it won't be as bad as Inquisitor [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.145996-A-Special-Gonzo-Review-D#3318485].

Why do people think you can't tell a story with the Space Marines or the Ultramarines? I've read many great stories with them as main character.

In answer to your question it means they are above mortal, better than mortal, beyond mortal in a whole new league.

I like the idea of it, but it still looks, well it looks a bit crap if anything. What they need to do instead is scrap it and do a film about the adventures of Jim Raynor with Blizzard cutscene graphics!

I didn't say it was impossible to tell a story with Space Marines. It's just not as easy to tell good stories with them. Look at it that way, your general Spacem Marine mission is to go somewhere, kill everything, praise the Emperor and go back. The Ultramarines are even worse in that aspect, because they follow the Codex Astartes by the the word. Which often means that to tell a intersting story about them, you'll have to tell one about an Ultramarine who breaks the rules. Of course a story like that can still be fun to watch, but in my opinion it is harder to pull off.
It is sad that it always fall back to the Space Marines, because the 40k universe has so much more diversity and more interesting characters. Just imagine a movie involving the Imperial Army, mere humans who stand the horrors of the universe. There could be real characters to identify with, not just giants in power armour. Or a story about the adventures of an inquisitor and his fight against inner and outer demons.

On your answer: I know that this is what it should mean, it just sounded strange in my ears. Thanks for your response.

Does any one else think that old guy who talked sounded a bit like yahtzee?
Wasn't that John Hurt? He has a brilliant voice, and is in some awesome films (including Alien and Spaceballs)
