I saw this topic:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.374434-Just-Nut-Up-And-Do-It?page=1

And saw it to be similar to my own thoughts on the subject matter. While typing a likely less-than-witty response to said topic, I decided to make an off-shoot topic based on the same discussion.

My response to the above topic included the sentence "If all else fails with your game, just slap some tits on the box art and you'll get some sales."

And so that got me thinking, scantily clad women bending over and baring their breasts and/or asses has been a marketing ploy for a very, very long time. "Sex sells", as they say. But does this marketing ploy actually work? Most would agree that this strategy is aimed at the hormone-infused teenage male gamer, so if you're no longer in that category, think back to when you were (obviously female gamers can't do this as they likely were never a horny teenage male :p)...did you ever buy a game purely because there was some hot pixelated pixie bearing her goods on the cover? Were you ever on the fence about deciding if you wanted a game or not and seeing a hot elf on the cover suggestively offering to perform miracles with her lips (as seen in the pic in the topic linked above) put you over the edge and made you decide to buy?

Edit: I'd imagine it's too late, but as the majority of most comments has involved some version of "No, but they can grab my attention" I've gone ahead and added that as a poll option, I apologize to everyone who's already voted that felt this would have been a more viable option.

Well this poll topic seems like a dud. =P

I've never bought anything *because* of boobs. I've bought some games *in spite* of boobs.

Hmmm, as a teen, I probably had the good sense not to spend my precious, limited amount of money on a video game just because there was some scantily clad woman on the cover. I think even then I would've thought to myself, "that looks retarded; they're just trying to sell the naked chick, not the game." I actually get slightly repulsed by overly gratuitous naked chicks on box art; for me it sort of implies that the game can't stand on its own merits.

I may have clicked some free flash games because the thumbnail had something like that though. That seems like something I would've done as a teen.

I can't recall anything I have bought just because of that, although being a horny teenage male I have noticed this. A game can grab my attention with it but it needs to still look like a good game. There are all kinds of other box art styles that can grab my attention too.

This topic makes me think of a certain videogame.

This was the cover.

I remember seeing this game on a shelf at a local videogame store when I was much younger than I am now. I admit I took a closer look at the game because of the cover, but I don't think it was because of the "boobs". Just the style and the way she was drawn in a sexual manner. I never did buy the game because it looked like shit.

I think people make too much of a big deal about stuff like this, both developer and consumer.

Breasts neither turn me on a game nor turn me off a game.

OP: Yeah, for years now every time I walk down a videogame aisle and see every other game featuring a big pair of barely covered breasts, all I can think is "When all else fails with your game, slap a pair of tits on the cover and you'll get at least some sales." And actually, just typing that gives me an idea for a poll topic that'll likely be a dud...so excuse me. :p

Heh heh, well put. It's a damn shame that it comes to that from time to time. I'm not saying that games have to be entirely devoid of sex appeal, but there's definitely such a thing as "over the top" and all too often games insist upon going there.

I haven't seen or read anything about Tera since my PC gaming days ended long ago. Just another MMO. Buuuuuut judging by the topic that I linked, it seems pretty much like an MMO based on soft-core fantasy porn. >.> Especially after seeing that "Tera In 10 Seconds" video that someone posted in a response.

Of course you did. It couldn't have been a more obvious call out to your original comment! I even put in the sarcastic tongue smiley for heavens sake!

I pick on Tera because it's so shamelessly retarded looking, and because of all the loli's and furries running around in it. It reminds me of "The Chive". Sure there are some funny pictures on "The Chive", but I always feel like I need to wipe the grease off the screen after going there, and it's not like there aren't funny pictures elsewhere.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on Tera.

My formative gaming years were during the heyday of Tomb Raider on the PS1... so, yeah.

I just looked over my games and only one of them has boobs on the cover.

However, I bought that online after being impressed by the demo.

So no, I've never purchased a game due to sexy cover art, not even in my early teenage years.

Whoa. Blast from the past there.

I only ever played the demo for Citizen Kabuto. Deeply unusual game.

It's more of a deterrent for me. I assume your game sucks if you have to use sex to sell it. I'm not really so certain [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmQqpPwxfoA&t=55] about "sex sells" for most things. Maybe for...lingerie or cologne or things like that, where the intent is to be attractive. But for games? It just comes across as desperate and pathetic. When I see some Beauty from the Uncanny Valley, it's actually very unsexy. And it also makes me a bit angry that they think they'll bring me in with that type of marketing.

Sex in general actually just makes me uncomfortable in games, like if I walked into my room and an animatronic band was going at it.

Why is there an animatronic band in my room? I dunno...

But that marketing didn't work on me when I was younger because my parents bought my games, and I didn't want mom to have to buy Boobs McGee's Backyard Wrestling '98. It doesn't work on me now because it's just too obviously pandering.

Oh, more or less.

I was really just seizing an opportunity to shit on The Chive.
I mean seriously...as I said I don't know much about the game. Well...nothing at all, actually. But from the videos and screenshots that I've seen, it seems like the game is 95% populated by 95% naked elves. You're saying they've got a bunch of lolis and furries running around as well?

Good god, I can only imagine what the "uncut" Asian version of the game looks like. o.o

Do a Google Image Search on "Tera Elin".

Actually don't. You'll end up on a government watch list.

And before the Elin fans crawl up my ass I'm just MAKING FUN OF THEM.

Without actually going to google, I'm gonna guess that this Elin is a loli furry? :p

I wouldn't buy a game for it, but it may very well grab my attention, or entice me to take a closer look (so to speak).

I almost always research my games first so box art has little appeal I already know if I will buy it or not that being said I dont think the sex appeal of some games is bad as such if done right i.e tongue in cheek or not actually detracting from the game.

I am looking forward to lollipop chainsaw and DOA5 which have T and A and shirtless guys no doubt (and a black guy in a tele-tubby suit maybe) but I am not going to buy them because of the boobs or even in spite of them its just I think I will enjoy playing them ATM on what little info I have which is all subject to change ofc closer to release.

Cover is not such a great way to sell games now as it was in the past a lot more people just buy online going straight to the game they want rather than perusing or passing past other games like they would when going to a high street store to buy their games.
