Basically there is a fight in congress now to keep things like french fries and pizza on the menu of school lunches for children. The reason for this is because the Obama administration is trying to get unhealthy food off the menu. So the special interest groups want the small amount of potatoes used in french fries and the tomato paste used in pizza to count as a "vegetable". Tell me escapist (especially non-Americans), what do you think about this?

Here is an article on the subject:

You can't get rid of pizza day! That was the best day of the week!

There's nothing wrong with pizza in the lunch menus. It's when our school added "Papa John's" as a pay for alternative that you could get every day that it became a problem. Pizza once a week is not unhealthy. Pizza every day of the week is a smidge unhealthy.

EDIT: If it affects your opinion, I'm a fatty American.

They could put vegetables on the pizza. And replace the greasy pepperoni with a leaner meat. Problem solved.

But french fries counting as a vegetable is ludicrous. Potatoes have almost no nutritional value by themselves, and deep-frying them removes most of it anyway.

I think what I have always thought: Congress has gone batshit bananas.

However, that being said, I have to wonder why the importance of protecting the place of junk food in school lunches. Unless it is going to grossly inflate the budgets of schools to only serve salads, sandwiches, and other things better suited to growing children, which I doubt it will, I have to think those who are trying to keep junk food on the menu are trying to only serve lobbyists who would make money off of that crap.
To be honest, when I was in school, the best meals were the ones probably healthier for me. The only meal I was hesitant at was the pizza, because it was nowhere near the flavor it should have been. All the other meals were fantastic, probably because the cooks at the school did a damn fine job at their work. I acquired a taste for spinach, of all things, at my grade school.
I say to Congress, bugger off. This is actually one thing the Obabo administration is doing that is a good thing.

Your post reminded me of this song.

OT: Yeah that's complete bullshit. At my high school they serve pizza just about every day and it's probably one of the cheapest items it offers. Meanwhile they sell salads and other healthier option, but it's usually more expensive. Also they serve fries with everything, including wraps and with their Mexican and Chinese food.

Healthy pizza does exist but I'm guessing the pizza served at schools is cheap ass pepperoni and cheese.

I'm Swedish and I say: you CAN'T get rid of pizza! I always looked forward to Pizza Day! (Of course, I also looked forward to Black Pudding Day but I was almost the only one for that one...)

Now, if it is on the menu several times a week then yes, that's a bit bad, but as a bi-weekly (or weekly) treat for the kids it's awesome. Our school food (so far) is paid for by the municipality I believe, so we don't have pay-for alternatives. You have to go off-campus for that.

Otherwise I support the idea of healthier food in school, but you've got to have a treat now and again.

Potatoes have a small nutritional value in them anyway. Coating them in fat and salt makes them horrendous. Pizza is also unhealthy, you generally get lots of cheese and fatty meats on it. It CAN be healthy, but the cheese and meat would need to go.

*Sighs*
Congress makes it so hard for me to try and defend this country against people outside the country. Congress seriously needs to pull their heads out of their asses so they can fix this country...

Pizza (normal, not cheeseless vegen pizza) w/ pepperoni or sausage includes, but is not limited to: Tomato Sauce (veggie), Cheese (dairy), pepperoni/sausage (meat), crust (grain), herbs and crap(herbs).
If you could put an apple on a pizza, it would be health food.
Delicious, greasy health food.

I don't think the number of food groups something is made from dictates the healthiness...

As a kid serving his fourth year in High School, I can say that school food has progresivly gotten worse. It was never 4 star food, but at least it filled you up and didn't make you puke. Last year, they removed french fries from the menu, which I am okay with(they were never very good). This year, the decreased the portion sizes. And when I say decreased, I mean they took a normal serving of food and cut it in half. Then they took away all sides. My lunch today was some pasta with tomato sauce. That is it. No fruit, no side, no nothing. There wasn't even meat in the sauce, just sweet pizza sauce.

Long story short, touch my pizza and I WILL bite your fingers.
