Pizza (normal, not cheeseless vegen pizza) w/ pepperoni or sausage includes, but is not limited to: Tomato Sauce (veggie), Cheese (dairy), pepperoni/sausage (meat), crust (grain), herbs and crap(herbs).
If you could put an apple on a pizza, it would be health food.
Delicious, greasy health food.
I don't think the number of food groups something is made from dictates the healthiness...
*slaps you*
I WILL DICTATE WHAT IS AND WHAT ISNT HEALTHINESS!

Congress wants kids to eat something besides veggies and tofu, people complain.

Honestly I think kids should be able to get what they want so long its prepared in a healthy way and in moderation. If you look at the schools nutrition plans and what it actually makes, its neither healthy (nor edible). I honestly don't think schools have the funding to really do the kind of massive planning and preparation that people want for kids.

Pizza isn't exactly a health food, but it isn't deadly to have it once a week, the problem though, is that it that the "pizza" my school served IS deadly to have once a week, pepperonis would literally float on the grease, not sure how it is everywhere else, but where I live it isn't fit for human consumption

Congress=Republicans, and the majority of them could give less of a shit about children's health. They are only interested in the amount of money these unhealthy foods can rake in to unhealthy food companies that they are most likely now asking campaign support from.

Honestly, I agree. If some idiot kid wants to eat french fries and pizza every day for lunch, then fuck em they had it coming.

I think it's funny, though, that the one of the Republican's reasons for allowing them is that "kids can choose what they want to eat", while another is that the companies who make the food would lose money. Contradiction, much?

They could put vegetables on the pizza. And replace the greasy pepperoni with a leaner meat. Problem solved.

But french fries counting as a vegetable is ludicrous. Potatoes have almost no nutritional value by themselves, and deep-frying them removes most of it anyway.
Potato skin has more potassium than a banana. Problem is most common serving of potato is to remove the skin deep fry it and cover it in salt. Which would make any food in the known world unhealthy.

I think what I have always thought: Congress has gone batshit bananas.
That's how they've always been. If Congress met in a room like the House of Commons chamber, that center area would see a lot of sword fights.

"Well, Bachmann, it seems you have done nothing to improve your technique!"
*cling!*
"You know what, Kerry? Your Un-American for saying that."
"Just STFU about liberals being Un-American, you Tea Party wannabe."
"WHAT!?!?!"
*klang!*

But to steer this on topic with the help of a French chef riding a stick insect, partisanship and lobbying has always been the twin hallmarks/bugbears of the US Congress. Companies like Sodexo would pay legislators money into campaign contributions, and then the politican is the companies puppet. No healthy food for you!

That one flash game, Oiligarchy, has a lobbying function that gives you an idea of what happens.

Proper Italian pizza (by which I mean thin, crispy, wood-oven baked, with not too much cheese or meat) is reasonably healthy. Chicago style pizza is fucking disgraceful in health terms. Anything with cheese baked into unusual places, such as the crust? Fuggedaboudit... Also, in Italy, pizza is a meal unto itself- you don't put extra carbs alongside it.

I saw an article about the health benefits of lycopene in the window of a wood-oven pizzeria, but I really think it's a question of balance: how much saturated fat do you need to eat in terms of cheese & meat before that health benefit is outweighed by the risks?

Also, French Fries aren't healthy. At all. Even British-style chips don't exactly qualify as a health food, and they're actually recognisable as having come from a potato.

I haven't been in a public school since elementary... how many years ago? I didn't eat the school lunches, but I do recall that you really didn't have a choice in the matter of what you got to eat. I'm all for them getting rid of french fries, but if they'd load a thin crust pizza with broccli, spinach, or other vegitables, it should be a definite option for public school meals. Not all pizza = Dominoes.

You know, I seem to recall the new congress saying "Jobs jobs jobs" in all their election speeches, but all I see is bickering, blocking of any legislation (especially the Jobs legislation) and now this.

They really know how to stay on message....

And people please. Pizza day sucked ass compared to Chili chips and cheese day.

So, are people mad that kids eat in school? I mean school food is already basically the same as prison food, take away the few things that are actually tasty even by the terrible school lunch standards, and no one will eat anything. They'll just stare blankly at the food shaped cardboard on their trays. Then throw it away.

My god. Its amazing how much people will lie to themselves to justify their habits.

Pizza is horrendously unhealthy. Throwing vegetables on it does not change that fact. To say that pizza every day is a smidge unhealthy is insane. Pizza every day will kill you. Americans die in their 50's and 60's from heart disease for a reason. The thing that makes pizza so unhealthy is the cheese, and without cheese, you can't technically call it pizza.

Maybe Im way on the other side of the fence and a little too hard on people with poor diets, but facts are facts. I'd rather be on this side and have a long healthy happy life. For the record, I am American, and I enjoy the healthy food I eat immensely.

It's everyone's right to slowly kill themselves however they want, but children need guidance. As someone who was neglected as a child, I can say that it sucks having to figure things out on your own long after your impressionable years. To open my eyes, it took the death of my father in his 60's from a cardiac embolism, and my mother in her 50's being dead for 45 minutes before being revived and saved with a quintuple bypass, but suffering minor brain damage from her brain going 45 minutes without oxygen.

When I was in public school, you kinda had a choice. You tended to get french fries, but a) a tiny amount, and b) there was tons of salad choices and whatnot you could get instead. On the other hand, it wasn't real pizza. It was basically "pizza-esque cardboard". It wasn't bad for you, it just wasn't good for you either.

And to the OP, it's not that they want it to count as healthy food. Most of the people that are lobbying on this are the frozen food manufacturers that produce, as said above, frozen slabs of cardboard with some red paste on them that don't want to have to shell out more cash to make them into actual foodstuffs. And true, I can't speak for a majority of the population, but at least at my school anyone who actually thought the school lunches were healthy for you were known for being out-and-out morons. They serve a bare minimum of what counts as "food" because they're legally required to ensure that children have a meal during the day.

In other words, it's the people that are churning out crap not wanting to spend money to make their crap less crappy. Hooray for crap \o/

Welcome to US politics. Where everyone lies, nothing gets done, and the public is unhappy no matter what happens.

And even pizza and chili chips and cheese days pales in comparison to even Waffle House cooking. Which I count as the lowest of the low in terms of cooking. All school food is terrible. There were times I just wouldn't eat.
