Pizza isn't exactly a health food, but it isn't deadly to have it once a week, the problem though, is that it that the "pizza" my school served IS deadly to have once a week, pepperonis would literally float on the grease, not sure how it is everywhere else, but where I live it isn't fit for human consumption
tis truth

there is grease...and then there is school grease.

you could swear they would take each individual piece of pizza, dump it in a vat of grease, then toss the pepperoni's on it and serve it to you that way.

OT: i think they have "bigger fish to fry" than school pizzas...but honestly

when you get to high school, i think it is perfectly up to that person to make whatever choice they want to eat, they want fatty as fuck food? more power to em, they want a hoagie with a side salad? good on them. let em eat what they wanna eat.

Delicious, greasy health food.
I don't think the number of food groups something is made from dictates the healthiness...

How is that even possible? Did you overload your hard drive and it just started spilling out? Watch out for tentacles!
That is exactly what happened. As we speak (figuratively), Japanese schoolgirls and tentacles are pouring out of my hard drive. But not to worry, I have tentacle-repellant!

Honestly, that pizza was one of the worst things about school lunches.
Microwaved, square, cardboard tasting piece of crap. I swear I chipped a tooth trying to break off a piece.

Get rid of it. It was that and when they screwed up mozzarella sticks day that I decided to bring in my own lunch instead.

Yeah because one unhealthy meal a day is going to ensure all of our kids become fatties. You know what makes them fat? Not moving and playing and mom and dad serving up a burger for dinner because they don't have the time to give a damn what their kids eat or do because they're too busy trying to work to keep their heads up above that sea of debt their in.

Maybe make the pizza and french fries not available everday, but there's no point in taking it away completely. Honestly I'm getting tired of Congress and pretty much all authority figures trying to take over everything. They're trying to control what we eat, what we watch, what we play, what we do online, how we raise our kids. It's getting out of hand in my opinion.

EDIT: Also, if they really want to change their school lunches, instead they should improve the quality of ingredients and cook it better. I remember when I was in school, lunch was absolutely awful and most days, I didn't eat anything more than the little bag of chocolate milk because the food tasted vile. Literally I would get still frozen green beans served to me. Nearly burnt pizza squares. Carrots that were about as crispy as a wet noodle. Chocolate pudding that tasted more like metal. Why doesn't anybody care about the fact that we serve our kids crap that you would never serve in your own home?

Pizza and fries are not health foods in any sense.
But getting them removed from school lunches all together would just make the whole school day suck.
It's OK to have non healthy food around children, we shouldn't be getting rid of it just because a few of the kids are "morbdly obese". We should be teaching them self control, to live with the greasy, cheesy, yummy temptation rather than casting it aside.

Pizza *could* be very healthy. You can cross some dairy, meat, vegetables, and grains off your list for the day all at once.

The issue with school lunches isn't the types of food they use, it's that it's likely provided by the lowest bidder who managed to cut the most corners and get away with it. Very little of what you eat from a place like that is going to have anything you need to begin with, no matter how "healthy" it is perceived to be.

*sigh* why do you say "US Congress" which you only mean special interest groups?

That's like saying that a cheeseburger with only cheese is less healthy than a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes and onions, both are unhealthy because the basic food is really fatty.

Some pizzas are fairly healthy, or at least in the middle. As long as it's not too greasy, and has some vegetables on it (maybe some peppers, broccoli, or maybe some olives [yes i know olives are fruits, still healthy]).

Fries on the other hand, are plain unhealthy. Even the soy fries that schools have been putting out lately, still doused in grease, just as bad for you.

That's why I said to change pepperoni for someting leaner. That way the only fatty thing is the cheese, and cheese made with skim milk is easy to come by and doesn't change a whole lot when it's melted on a pizza anyway.

And cheesebugers aren't unhealthy if you use lean meat and don't cook it in oil.

You, sir or madam, fail.

How about they have *both* unhealthy food and healthy food? That way, people who don't care about getting fat can have their unhealthy food, and those who want to be healthy aren't forced to eat unhealthy food? Or just make the unhealthy food healthier? French fries for example are going to be unhealthy no matter how you make them unless you used popped potatoes instead, but pizza can be cooked with lean meat and skim milk and burgers don't have to be dumped in oil.

Of course, there is one problem with the argument that those who get fat only have themselves to blame if they are children; namely, the fact that their children. Their cognitive processes have not fully developed yet and as such cannot be expected to make decisions like an adult would. Normally, it should be the parents regulating this, but parenting in America sucks balls.

or they could serve pizza and veggies?

I think the biggest issue with school lunches is the quality of the healthy food. I don't know how much this changed but when I was in school most lunches came with some vegetables, like green beans, peas, or carrots, and almost no one ate them. It wasn't that we didn't like veggies, or at least that wasn't the only reason, it was because they were disgusting canned veggies that were cooked to an inch of their life and served plain. They smelled terrible, were tasteless at best and nasty at worse, and had the worst texture. I bet that is still what most schools serve, and if it is they aren't going to get the kids to actually eat healthy lunches until they improve the quality, and that takes money.

And no one is going to become obese from a single slice of pizza once a week.

While it may not constitute as a health food, Pizza is actually fairly filling. A slice or two is enough to satisfy someone in school during their lunch time until they can get home to eat something else/better.

However, you all have to realize that if schools served exclusively health food, they'd lose sales as people would start bringing stuff from home.

Well I think pizza should stay. It does at our schools but thats cause we only sell hawiian and supreme during non-junk food days (like a free-dress day).

This is what Australian pizza looks like though.

I see no problem with removing unhealthy options from school lunches. Kids are not smart enough or responsible enough to make healthy choices. You could maybe make that argument at the high school level, but we are talking kindergarten through 12th grade. A part of school is educating students to make good decisions for the future, and part of that should be making healthy eating decision. Then again, America really needs to work on its health education, what with our obsession with weight and less of our obsession on health and fitness.
And Congress should honestly be ashamed of itself for bowing to special interests and defending it with some hollow statement about freedom in an institution that require everyone below the age of 18 to go to so that they can be productive members of society.

But french fries counting as a vegetable is ludicrous. Potatoes have almost no nutritional value by themselves, and deep-frying them removes most of it anyway.
I wont argue with the deep frying bit, but potatoes are actually chock full of rich nutrients. The problem is that they are very starchy, which your body uses as fuel (similar to sugar.) Too much of it and it just gets stored as fat.
