You know the word moron was originally a medical term. You don't hear anyone complain about that.

Lighten up.

Just use the word stupid or something else. Having worked in the human service field it's offensive to the developmentally delayed as well as many others. All I'm saying is just makes someone sound ignorant when it's used and is offensive to some so just don't use it. There are better words which aren't as offensive.

I just read a newspaper article today at school about the Special Olympics wanting to ban the word "Retarded" actually.

Using "retarded" as a medical term is perfectly fine just like how using Douche [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douche], ***** [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/*****], Bastard [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastard], Ass [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ass_(animal)], and the ever dreaded Negro [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negro] (AKA: ******) are all perfectly fine when using them in correct terms and definitions. "Retarded" can't, and shouldn't, be outright banned because you can never control what everyone says and people are going to spit out.

"Retarded" should be considered a swear word, albeit a light one compared to "Fuck" and "Shit" since it is so commonly used in very casual conversation, but if it's a swear word then it holds the same privilege as one.

Simply put, if "fuck" can be shouted out 5 times in as many seconds in a movie, then there should be no reason why they can't say "retarded" as many times to. People swear all the time in casual conversation, yelling out "Holy shit!" when surprised and moaning "Oh fuck, that hurts like a *****!" when in pain and shouting "You're being retarded!" when frustrated with someone.

People may not like curse/swear words, but you can't get rid of them. At some point people are going to have to grow thicker skin with the words that are used but at the same time people have to be sensitive of what they say and to whom without being insensitive to other people's feelings.

But I guess it's all moot point as eventually there will be a new "bad word" on the horizon that people don't want people to say. Wasn't "pants" banned from television once?

In regards to the "N" word, we should all know that it was initially used by whites in regards to black slaves. Since then, blacks have tried to turn that word into a term of endearment, amongst themselves. Due to the segregation, lynching, and general hate against blacks, it because an exclusive term, something that blacks could have that could separate themselves from a white society that they felt would not help them. So now if a white person uses it, it has implications to back when it was offensive and commonly used on blacks.

Personally,
I have a mental disorder,
and I have a higher IQ than either of my parents at a grade 12 level, and I'm not in grade 12.
I take it personally because to me,
being "retarded" doesn't mean you're stupid.
If they call someone a retard,
that's offensive.
If they call inanimate objects stupid, then I take no offense.
I have a mental disorder and I don't give a shit when people say the word retarded.

People need to realize something, words are just words. They only hurt if you let them.

I mean, leave it alone. I hate it when it gets overused, but do you ever use the word "gay" to describe something in a negative manner?
Point, set and Match, right there.

I can't say it bothers me too much, but mainly because I rarely hear it anymore. I'm assuming its an American thing. in London, the most I hear is 'It's Shite'.
Same, I live in the North East of England

See, I can't be bothered by people using the term in a literal or accurate sense. If someone is acting very VERY stupid, I'll call em retarded until the short bus comes for them.
Cheers. Of course, for some, they'll evade it all their life. To clean up youtube, I think you'd need enough short buses to sink the Lusitania but maybe that's just my lack of suffering fools gladly shining through.

Anyway, griping about people using the word seems retarded.

People who chose the bottom two options obviously know no family members of retarded people.

It is not okay.
3 of my family members are retarded, 6 of my friends have retarded family members. I know them and I voted for one of the bottom options. They're just words, I don't get what the big deal is.

Honestly, its just a word. As with any other word (or anything for that matter), overuse of one can become irritating. But still, only a word and if you take offense to words, you need to take a breath, step back, and look at yourself. Do you really want to be the kind of person who over-reacts to such a minor thing as a word?

... people take things way too seriously, and thats a bigger problem than a word.

Really, it's just the natural progression of racial, ethnic, or conditional slurs to go from slurs to negative slang and on into obscurity. They won't go away from consternation but they will all fade away in time to be replaced by other terms of negative slang. See terms such as "******-rigged", or "he jew'd me out of it", or "I got jap'd". Not many people use most of those terms anymore and people who do don't think of them in terms of what the original connotation was. Truth is, the only way to keep such terms from fading away is to keep being militantly offended by them, that practically ensures their continued use. So just let it be and let them die out on their own.

I hate it when people use words out of context... especially saying things are retarded or gay (Gay means happy for feth's sake! the word their rotting brains are searching for is queer!. and no, I'm not a homophobe or any kind of singular group hater. I hate everyone)

I don't see the big deal, it's just a word and I don't think the possibility of offending someone will stop the escapist's resident herculean exemplar from saying "pant's on head retarded" and "go team retard", "pants on head stupid" and "go team stupid" are not as funny.
