I've heard a lot of negative feedback lately on regenerating health in modern shooters, and for some reason, it made me think of Ninja Gaiden II's health system. For those of you who don't know, how it works is that you have a health bar that regenerates after a fight, but some of the damage you take becomes lasting damage, slowly decreasing your maximum health, and when you reach a checkpoint, your health restores fully. So I was thinking, could this work in a shooter? I think it could, but I'd like to hear other perspectives as well on this.

I remember the times when you could pick up a medkit and use to get health back, I always liked that.

Halo 1 already did this to some degree. You had your regenerating shields, but they could get taken out fairly quickly if you didn't play smart. Underneath that you had a set life bar that could only be restored by reaching the end of the level or by finding a health kit (just as you can use potions in NG2 any time to refill your life). Personally, I still feel this sort of health system is one of the best that's been conceived. You get the benefit of being rewarded for playing well, but you're not totally borked if you make a mistake then trip over an auto save point because if you play well enough when your back is to the wall the regenerating shield can be enough to keep you alive.

I remember Killzone had this going on too (at least the first one did, haven't played 2 or 3 yet). Your health regenerated to a certain degree, but if you took more than the threshold of that degree, you're left with less health until you found a health pack/medkit. Worked alright then, so I think the answer is yes.
