I use subtitles in games, because I have a tiny hearing problem and so I don't miss any of the plot, Though Subtitles Floating at the bottom of your view doesn't seem very realistic.

Do you use Subtitles in Games?

I have no hearing impairments whatsoever, but have this odd need to have subtitles enabled in a game. Probably because I read a lot faster than characters speak? Dunno.

Oh, and 'cause the spoken versus written dialogue is almost always different, and I like seeing the difference.

I use subs in games just to be sure I don't miss a thing, especially if it's a password, code, etc.

Yes, as seems to be common with several other people I always enable subtitles whenever I can so I don't miss any dialogue. Though they sort of ruin things since I read faster than the characters talk so any attempts at dramatic dialogue go to shit.

Oddly enough. I find that I understand the conversations better with the subtitles on. That and I'm always distracted by other people when I play so its nice to be able to read that small little part that I missed because some idiot can't stop shouting about something.

I always use subtitles because I don't want to miss anytthing. It's a little easier to understand what's going on .

I generally leave subtitles off but when they are on they don't really bother me or distract me in the least.

I think the inclusion of subs in all games is a great idea for people with hearing impairments.

Usually leave subtitles off.
The only time I've had the subtitles on was for GTA4 whenever Little Jacob was around.

Used to reading from games (Big RPG fan) so subtitles are natural when available, sometimes I'll miss some dialogue when I have the subtitles off and often that is disappointing missing key story elements or some well placed wit. (Most often off base wit)

Like most people, I read faster than I hear dialogue, so I prefer them on. Also, since most video game characters don't have "natural" facial movements (esp. with any comic/cartoon-inspired graphics), if you miss a bit of dialogue you can't subconsciously pick up the words from the lip movements (though I'm sure they keep mouth movements generic to make localization dubbing easier).

Usually I do, but I've been playing Fallout 3 and aren't using them for some reason...

I do use them whenever I can. While my skills in written english are decent, I admit I have a problem with understanding spoken english sometimes (songs, movies, games). So in order to follow the plot as closely as I can and lest I miss any jokes or interesting dialogue, I keep the subtitles on.

I use them all the time. You can't miss a detail when you have them on. Also, in GTA4 when anyone speaks a language other than English, it show what they are saying in English. Even in L4D, though it might be a tad cheating, I use them to see if there are any Specials coming at me and my friends.

If there are subtitles by default I will leave them on, if not, I will play without them, so it's not really a big deal for me. This is only for english games, obviously not japanese or other languages...
